How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewEric is one of the best hosts you could ever dream to have! Even tho, there was a slight inconfort for us in the beginning, Eric insisted to make it right for us, it was wonderful! Seriously, this has been so relaxing for us, it took me one week to come back from this trip and write this review. The place is also right in the center, next to the canal, you'll be in the right place to visit the city! For sure, if we come back to Gent, we'll stay with him. Thank for everything! We look forward to our Antwerp at your other place!
Nothing much, Eric made it right arranging another room for us with the initial incomfort we had in the first room at the base floor. Thank you again for doing this!

Verified reviewA sweet suite tastefully decorated with home furnishings, books and artwork. It felt like being home. Maybe not my home, but it felt more welcoming than virtually any commercial hotel room I've stayed in. The owner, Eric, dropped by to check if everything was alright and to offer breakfast. A kind man, and very helpful with info about the city. The self check-in process went seamlessly. Pre arrival texts offering access codes, transport info and exact directions to find the place (which isn't marked on the outside) were spot-on. Rooms (there are 2, it is a true suite) were generous sized and felt
Street was busy during the day, the front room of the suite is visible to the public which gives you that "living in a fishbowl" feeling. There are drapes and grills to cover the windows, but then it blocks the canal view. A gauzy curtain or mesh screen might serve for better privacy. There is no shower, but a large sunken tub with a shower head on a hose. I didn't try either as I was only staying one night. The tub lacked splash curtain and I didn't see an overhead holder for the shower head so it seemed like it would be awkward to take a shower. Take note there is a restaurant right next door. Normally it is listed as closing around 21:00 but the night I stayed they were open til 01:00 for some reason. Eric informed me the next day that is very unusual. Despite this the room was surprisingly quiet. The only bothersome part was occasional whiffs of cigarette smoke, but even that was infrequent and I didn't feel like I was being gassed out. (I have a sensitive sense of smell.) These negatives are IMHO really small compared to the quality and ambience the room offers. Would not deter me from renting again if I return to Ghent.

Verified reviewWe really had a wonderful stay! The owner was very nice and quick to answer our questions when we had some. The location could hardly be more central, only a few minutes by walk to the Korenmarkt. The living room is amazingly decorated and the whole place filled with all kinds of interesting books about painting, history etc. The room was incredible, with the most comfortable bed you'll ever see, and a bath behind thin curtains to relax in the light of candles...we definitely recommend it!
Nothing, all was perfect!

Verified reviewLocation only
It was terrible, unfortunately. I paid 224€ for two nights. I slept one night and left. I didn’t sleep the second night. It was dirty, old, and had a terrible design. There were a lot of random items and colors. Everything was very bad. I do not recommend it.
Ahmed, - we're not going to waste too many words on this kind of low attitude. You slept in a neo-classical building full of art (of established artists as well as young students of the nearby art schools) and with a private hammam, at a very low price (you enjoyed a promotion). We exist for 10 years now, it's the first time ever we met a person who is that bad-mannered, rude and uneducated. Please do this at home, not in a civilized city. It all started when you asked for the WiFi code at 1 o'clock at night, and (because everybody was sleeping) you didn't get an answer right away - while the WiFi code was on page 1 in the letter in your room. The way you left the room: it was a pigsty. Stay away, we won't allow you in our house any longer; you don't meet our standards. A short, last remark: mind that women are your equals (at least), so treat them with respect and kindness - you seem to have a huge problem with that; which is utterly unacceptable.

Verified reviewB&B Schopenhauer is centrally located next to some great restaurants, bars and cultural locations. It's a perfect place to stay during a holiday in Ghent. Schopenhauer is both comfortable and unique, it's a really special place to stay. The hammam was top notch. We also felt very welcome. We met Eric briefly and he was really lovely. His recommendations were great. We will definitely stay again if we visit Ghent in the future.

Verified reviewGood location alongside the river. Clear instructions on how to park, find the place and enter. It's clear the host tries hard to please with this property.
This room wasn't for us. It was listed as a honeymoon suite, and we took it only because of the location. The bed is sunk into the floor which makes getting out of it or making it up awkward. There is no shower, only a bathtub, which is large and comfortable but the absence of a shower without a curtain is problematic.
Mike... What a poor attitude... First you praise the location, the host and our beautiful bath tub, and then you start nagging about our extraordinary in-the-floor Japanese style bed (with a Western hyper comfortable 2.500 euros mattress and WITH a curtain and a shower, by the way), which is VERY CLEARLY visible on at least 5 pictures. You have to be blind not to see it. You could have chosen a room with a 'standard' bed (we have them!), but you made a mistake: a wrong choice. And now you blame YOUR mistake on someone else. How childish is that, and what a lack of respect for our team. Very, very poor behaviour.

Verified reviewWe thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights at Schopenhauer, split between two very different suites. Both suites were spacious, comfortable and fun! There were books and pieces of art in both suites which made our stay interesting and enjoyable. Each suite had particular features - the sunken bed in the first one was very comfortable and the shower and outdoor space in the second one was great. In all the accommodation was great and added much to our visit to Ghent. The location of Schopenhauer was really good for exploring the city. A very few minutes walk took you to the heart of the city - the castle, the bell tower and cathedral.
