How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis is a lovely area with a very nice bakery/supermarket/fritterie - all within walking distance from the property. Within the property itself the kitchen area was well equipped with enough crockery/cutlery/pots & pans/toaster/microwave/hob unit. The bathroom/shower room was very nice (however the fan had a tendency to stay on for a long time/all night). Although we did not use the barbeque - this was pleasant area to sit.
When entering the property there was a very strong damp/musty smell which was present throughout the holiday. Also it was a very dark property, especially in the entrance hallway and throughout, needing to have the lights on most of the time. The bedroom also had a lingering musty smell and there were no storage facilities for clothes as the two bedside drawers had towels in one and bed linen in the other. There was also a TV in the bedroom which was not connected to an aerial and when we asked the owner, he said you can only stream from your own devices, so was not actually usable as a TV. The only place that we could hang our clothes was from a metal frame which was located in another room. We were shown the bar/sitting area and were told by the owner that we were not allowed to use the bar area as he did not have a licence?. In the cellar was a table football/table tennis table provided, however the damp lingering smell down there was not pleasant. We asked about the use of the garden and were told we could sit at the top end of the garden but nowhere else because of his dog (as it was a shared garden with his own property adjacent). Access to the garden was through a back door which had no key so we had to use two securing latches to lock it from the inside, however the following day the door was actually locked from the outside, which in reality was a fire hazard as we could not get out that door in an emergency situation.
Thank you for sharing your concerns. We would like to address some misconceptions regarding your review. Firstly, we want to assure you that there is no risk of a fire hazard in our house. As showed on the fire evacuation plan, the house has four main exits, and the fifth door you mentioned is not in use and does not provide access to the garden. Instead, guests can access the garden through the sliding doors of our veranda. Furthermore, guests have full access to the entire garden, and we encourage them to utilize it. There is a suggested secluded sitting area at the top end of the garden, as occasionally our dog Marley likes to visit the main garden and we want to provide a peaceful space for guests. Regarding the smell you mentioned, we apologize for any inconvenience caused. It is possible that it resulted from inadequate ventilation. We always recommend guests to open windows and use ventilation while cooking. However, we are actively looking into this issue to ensure it doesn't persist. Regarding the check-out process, we noticed that the return of the keys did not occur as we agreed upon, as you left without notice. We kindly request to adhere the check-out procedures for a smooth operation of our rental. If there were any misunderstandings regarding this matter, we regret for any confusion caused. In terms of storage, we understand that space may be limited in the bedroom, but there are additional possibilities for storage in the hallway, as you mentioned. Furthermore, we provide a television screen for guests who prefer to cast their streaming services. We sincerely hope that despite these concerns, you still enjoyed your stay with us. Your feedback is valuable, and we appreciate the opportunity to address these matters.

Verified reviewThe entire home is very spacious and cosy, with many rooms to relax and unwind. The kitchen has enough space for a couple to make all their meals for the dinner, and is equipped with enough dishes and cookware. The bed is very comfortable and there's plenty of blankets and pillows to snuggle into. The location of the home itself is fairly quiet, and only a few minutes drive to the Hoge Kempen park and restaurants in the area of Maasmechelen. Not very accessible by public transport, though. But still a good choice for a couple or solo traveller who wants their own kitchen!
It is good to know that the house is directly next to the house of the owners/hosts, so the home does not offer complete privacy. You can see their house from the kitchen windows and the garden of the home is also used by them. Also, you will need to bring your own towels, washcloths, and kitchen cloths.
