How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI appreciated that the facility was clean and it appeared that security was present at night. Big king size bed.
I felt that previous clients had overrated the facility and based on the high rating I was expecting so much more. I was expecting excellent and I was disappointed to found the accomodation to be alright, fine or just okay. The staff were cordial. There wasn't anything to complain about, but nor was there anything to rave about either. The reception area was a little untidy and unwelcoming. The facility does not offer any communal catering facilities, so I would have appreciated a microwave oven in the rooms to warm our store bought dinners. The bed duvet was too small for the bed and did not cover the full width of the bed. see attached photo. We were surprised to find that we were required to provide our own bottled drinking water as none was provided by the facility. We were travelling and arrived at 8pm, after stores were closed; and as we had not anticipated the need to provide our own bottled water, we were without, so we had to boil water in the kettle to provide safe drinking water for ourselves. Booking.com advertised the room at R1050.00, but when we arrived we were charged R1250.00/P830. When I queried this, the receptionist merely provided a copy of the invoice she generated and said she'd processed payment as per the invoice, obviously not as per the advertise booking.com price. The bedside wall lights did not work. All things that we coped without, yet which I thought dropped their rating from excellent to just good.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent stay at Shalakwe Hills-Inn. We truly appreciate your detailed comments as they help us to continuously improve our service and guest experience. We’re pleased to know that you appreciated the cleanliness of the facility, the presence of night security, and the comfort of the king-sized bed. We’re also happy to hear that you found our staff to be cordial. We regret, however, that your stay did not fully meet your expectations. Please allow us to clarify a few points you raised: Bottled Water: We do provide complimentary bottled water to all Booking.com guests upon check-in. We sincerely apologise if this was overlooked during your arrival, and we will ensure this is addressed with our team. Room Rate Difference: The rate reflected on Booking.com is shown in your selected currency, which can vary slightly at the time of payment due to bank exchange rate fluctuations. The amount you were charged upon arrival (P830) matches the confirmed Booking.com rate in local currency. We always share the Booking.com invoice with guests upon check-in to maintain transparency. Kitchen Facilities: As stated in our listing, we are not a self-catering apartment. We have a small kitchen used by our staff to prepare breakfast for guests upon request. That said, we do have a microwave on site, and guests are always welcome to use it to warm store-bought meals. We appreciate your suggestion, and we will look into how we can better communicate this to our guests in advance. Duvet Size & Lighting: Thank you for highlighting the issue with the duvet and bedside lights. We have since inspected the room and made the necessary corrections to ensure a more comfortable experience for future guests. Reception Area: Your comment about the reception area is well noted. We are working on enhancing the appearance of our entrance and front desk area to ensure a more welcoming first impression for all guests. Once again, we thank you for your feedback and for choosing to stay with us. We hope to have the opportunity to host you again and provide you with an improved experience. Warm regards.

Verified reviewThe host was very helpful and nice; the house was extremely clean and roomy; the security was excellent; The Wi-Fi was excellent and TV entertainment was great for a change. The kitchen was entirely supplied. Very useful if you could find a place in town to buy food supplies.
I was very disappointed that the host refused to take a credit card. The hit on our cash wallet was significant. I rated the experience lower because of it. The place was very hard the find initially. GPS had it wrong. (We had to ask for directions). I had trouble figuring out the door lock/security. The local police was called twice. This was very annoying.

Verified reviewIt felt just like being at home….Gloria and her wonderful staff went out of their way to make my stay very relaxing and enjoyable! Gloria was the perfect tour guide and made arrangements for me to go to Victoria Falls, Sunset River Cruise, Chobe National Park, Villages Tour and more! She also recommended restaurants in the area, and provided transportation herself. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Shalakwe Hills!!

Verified reviewThe team there is young but they seem to have mastered the customer care concept way better than the big brands. The focus on clients/customers. Unity and Sandra were absolutely great and accommodating. When we didn’t know where to get taxis, one of them escorted us to the taxi stop. When we wanted to go to the crocodile farm, they made reservations for us. When external food deliveries failed us they worked with us and another teammate to help us get food. They were indeed absolutely great.

Verified reviewOur stay was amazing from start to finish. The staff were incredible and helped us book a boat cruise and a visit to the crocodile park, as well as taxis and assisted us with any questions. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and great value for money. They also decorated our room in such a special way as we mentioned we had recently passed our exams. Thank you!
