How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

I don’t think they could do anything about the raccoons that we spotted swimming in the pool at night. I think that just comes with being in Belize 😆

Verified reviewExtremely clean, spacious, and had everything we needed for our short stay. It would be comfortable enough for an extended stay as well. The kitchen had everything you could need and the linens, mattress, towels, etc were great quality and very comfortable. The AC also worked very well and we were able to have a comfortable night sleep. We would stay here again!

Verified reviewThe location is perfect. 2 minute walk to the beach, with Alux supplied beach towels and chairs. 3 minute walk to a very good coffee shop and a restaurant that we really enjoyed. The kitchenette is very well equipped . We only spent 2 nights, but wish we stayed longer.

Verified reviewIt was a bit hard to find, but it is an excellent location for walking around. There is a nice coffee shop. in a treehouse and nice restaurants around. We enjoyed our visit.

Verified reviewWe did submit some suggestions for improvement-adding coffee creamer to the setup and providing a pedestrian map to the place. We got a response which basically said "we're not doing that".
Hi Hilde, We are sorry to hear that your stay wasn't everything it could have been. If our attempt to provide you with an understanding of how our prior experience and continued logistical challenges meant we wouldn't be acting on one of your suggestions was taken as us being dismissive, we sincerely apologize. We normally provide maps and directions to guests electronically in advance of their arrival so they can find the property, we also supply a copy of the tourist association's area map in the guide book supplied in the room. There are also copies available for guests upon request in the office. That said, we are now in touch with the tourist association in an effort to get ourselves on the next printing of the map. We appreciate all constructive feedback and take it seriously. Your and other guests' experience is the best way for us to understand what we can do to better meet the needs and demands of future and returning guests. Verified reviewAlux House was everything we wanted. Nice kitchen with everything we needed. My husband enjoyed cooking there every day. Nice little touch with the herbs and spices to add to our dishes. We love the coffee maker. We love the vegan soaps. The pool was just so delightful to enjoy. It was close to the nice little shops and restaurants in Placencia. The beach is a few steps away. We had a very quiet time by the port every morning for our walks. And then we enjoy a beach swim by the other side where there were very many nice restaurants in front of the beach like Tipsy Tuna, Bohemian... Very close to the nice, long Placencia walkway where all the near souvenir shops are. We will treasure all the memories we've experienced in this wonderful property. ❤️
Mosquitoes and sand fleas are ever annoying the week we were there. They were everywhere. It's not the fault of the house but definitely could do without these creatures

For your next trip, a couple of hints from the locals for dealing with the sand flies and other biting critters. Oil, typically coconut, applied to exposed skin, especially below the knee, is a great way to prevent midge/sand fly/no-see-ums bites. If you do get bit, Vicks Vaporub takes the edge off the itch. The owner was the worst experience I ever had … called us at 10:30pm, cutting the water while we take showers, ask for extra money for extra linens, made my friend pay extra fees even though he slept on the floor, it was very disrespectful. In addition there was a lot of dirt and broke pieces
Louis, We are sorry your experience was less than expected. However, for other guests, some context is required, and we ask they read our other reviews to get a true picture of what an experience at Alux House is really like, not a review that was posted in retaliation for getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Had you been forthcoming with the number in your party at check-in, we could have provided both a mattress and linens for the party in question. You chose to be deceptive about this and proceeded to sneak unregistered guests into the room and then chose to remove linens from a storage area without asking. Yes, you were asked to pay for additional guests and for the additional cleaning required by your party going into an unauthorized area. As for your claims of calling you at 10:30, the manager was advised of the issue after you were seen smoking on the property within feet of non-smoking signs and the issues with additional guests and linens removal was identified. You asked to speak to the owner, who then came down to talk to you about the issues at 10:30 in the common area by the pool where your party was drinking and playing cards. You were calmly informed of the implications of extra guests advised of the extra charges, your questions were answered with courtesy, and you were thanked for your cooperation after you expressed that you understood and agreed to the additional charges. As for the shower, this was an outdoor shower accessed almost 2 hours after check-out time, and during pool maintenance, the water was not 'cut-off'. Rather, the pressure dropped while water was being added to the pool and returned shortly after the pump started and the pressure stabilized. We do sincerely hope you choose to be honest and forthcoming with your future stays and suggest you read the hotel policies. This will most assuredly end up with you having a better experience.

Verified reviewThe property was spectacular! It was the perfect location. We were 3 minutes from the beach, 2 minutes to the pedestrian path and 5 minutes to restaurants and supermarkets. The lodging was spotless and well equipped. The little pool was perfect for a quick dip. It was probably our favorite lodging during our 10 day trip to Belize! Oh and the staff were super nice and helpful. I highly recommend staying here if you’re in Placencia.

Verified reviewGreat location. Great kitchen. Owners very responsive on the app Whatz up. Free Laundry was the the icing on the cake. I bought a laundry sheet from the owner. Near things like coffee house "Brewed Coffee" that has things like Seaweed Milkshake! Next to the beach!
We did not choose this location for the pool, but the pool was small. Its probably perfect for small kids. Honestly I was not aware it even had a pool so it did not take away from the experience. Its a great place to stay!
