How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewRelatively clean and a great location downtown Halifax. Bathrooms were clean
Not enough privacy in the rooms. Curtains would be a nice idea. And the staff wasn’t very proactive and kind. They gave the bare minimum. I saw a mouse in the kitchen and they didn’t care at all..

Verified reviewThe location was terrific! The common areas were clean and modern.
We paid for a room with a private washroom. The room was comically small - there wasn’t room for us to put our luggage anywhere but in front of the door. About a foot of space all around the bed to walk around. Bathroom was also comically small. Hard to wash my hair and body in the tiniest shower ever. Almost $400 for 2 nights, but we made it work!

Verified reviewThis was a very clean and quiet hostel. I arrived just after midnight and a member of staff was able to easily and quickly check me in so that I could get to my room and crash after three consecutive flights to get to the east of Canada from Australia. The bed was comfortable and the communal kitchen had coffee and tea avalable, which was a nice touch. Bathrooms were clean, and only shared with three other peopl (my roommate and the other room in our section). Very secure and safe.
Awkward stairs if carrying heavy luggage, but this is to be expected in a charming older heritage building.

Verified reviewLocation
Everything else, mouse in the kitchen freely living, small room for 6 people, no restriction for how late you can check in and how much luggage you can have. Two girls checked in 9 pm w about 150kg luggage. Imagine you open all that at around 9, 10 pm in the room. And then at around 5 started to pack n leave. In summary no privacy no consideration for the sleep of your guests you have. No elevator yet the front desk did not give me sheets when I checked in and had to go three stories with my luggage up. The outlet on the bed did not work. No bedside table or anything. The light on the bed is so bright that is not usable no dimming. Only one outlet on the wall behind a locker. At 7 am, no coffee in the kitchen yet. Open food in the kitchen and mice are not a good combination. The TV and Netflix in the lounge have no instructions no remote either. Old carpet and dirty. Late arrival on the bunlbed above me had to put sheets in the dark. At least if you accept guest at that time take the effort and do it for them. Was I supposed to sleep with all the earthquake noises of the bed at that time? It is not non profit. 6 front desk people get paid salary for doing nothing. A 6 person room generates 250 elsewhere and you make 380 with offering no services at all. No wonder you prefer younger guests, they fall asleep much easier! And do not have a comparison with what other hotels offer. Imaginev6 stranger sleep in a room, making any noise makes you so uncomfortable and your beds and lockers make earthquake sounds with every touch! Putting a lock on those lockers and opening it in the middle of the night for anything you may need in the dark means you prefer to wait till morning. Awful awful awful
Hello Arezou, we regret that your stay with us was such a negative experience, and appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us regarding your stay. We have just completed 19 months of renovations to the building, interior and exterior, but there is always room for improvement. The HI Halifax Hostel does have multiple room types such as 2, 4, 6, 8, bed dormitory style rooms, as well as private en-suites. Upon check in, we do inform our guests of the hostel house guidelines, which include a quiet time, which is between 11pm and 7am, unfortunately, some guests were not following these guidelines and do apologize for this. If you are comfortable, could you let us know what room you were in and we can inspect the room to ensure all amenities are working properly. Upon check in, our front desk staff are to distribute linens to all guests and we will retrain our front line staff and will strive to be more consistent to our check in procedures, again this is not the norm, I assure you. We are a heritage building and are limited to what we can do with space and additional services such as an elevator, unfortunately, this cannot be installed in the existing building. Please know that we have heard your words and will move forward, improving, as we do. thank you, Shane

Verified reviewThe hotel was clean and staffs were amazing.
I booked a bed in a 6bedroom girls room, the room was so warm that i had to sleep topless. I went to the reception asking if they have an extra electric fan but nothing. I then asked for a cardboard so I have something to use. The room was full. I get it it’s inexpensive but they could have atleast invested on a better stand fan and not the $19.99 that’s sold at canadian tire.’
Hello Faith, thank you for your input regarding your stay with us.....we do our best to keep the hostel clean and our staff are amazing, thank you. We have noticed that the choice of fans could have been researched a bit better and are exchanging and installing new stands for our fans. Enjoy your day. Shane

The private room is really tight. Can't really move around once in it.
Hello Kao, thank you for you comments. I can appreciate your thoughts on our rooms, we are a heritage property and during renovations had to deal with the room sizes and were unable to extend them due to the structure. Private/Family rooms have become in high demand and we are accommodating this need as best we can. thank you, Shane

Verified reviewThis really was more like a boutique hotel (according to another review) and they were correct. Very cute, well decorated. Staff were lovely.
Our roommates showed up at 3am. I was already having trouble falling asleep then they came in and turned the lights on and were awake until 5am. I've never stayed in a hostel before and thought maybe people couldn't check in after 11. I was wrong. Every time my husband moved in the bunk bed it shook my bed and kept me awake. The pillows were very thin.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to submit your comments about your stay at our hostel. We are happy that you enjoyed the hostel, we have put a lot of work into the building with 19 months of renovations for your guests/members. Shared rooms can be an issue, but we do explain to all of our guests that it is quiet time from 11pm to 7am, and that if there are issues, to please come to the front desk for assistance. we will be inspecting our bunkbeds as they are top of the line beds, to ensure that they are all tightly fastened and put together. As we need, we will be updating our pillows as well. We do take our reviews seriously and will be looking at this. thank you, Shane
