Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaFor a hotel that tries to elude luxury I was really surprised they cheaped out on the toiletries provided (dollar store quality). We flew to Nfld and I assumed it would be decent in this regard so didn’t bring any -eg they didn’t provide conditioner-shampoo and also a 2-1 (why?) but offered you 15% off of their Aveda products from their spa… and there aren’t any drugstores nearby so just a tip to bring your own if you stay here
The room was very nice and the area around the hotel was very quiet. The bed was great- very comfortable with good linens. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

CanadaVery little information about St johns and events. A little further from the centre than we would normally stay. Outside walking distance although easily reached by car.
Room was well equipped and comfortable. Enjoyed the bistro for 2 meals. Bistro called on 3rd night to say they were closing in case we wanted to order.

United StatesHousekeeping staff not consistent. One day they did not come till around 5pm. The next morning they knocked on our door before we were up to give us more towels (which we did not request). I stored those in the bathroom but when they came to make up the room, they took them! Do not understand what they were doing. Also when they made up the room they did not remove or replace used glasses/coffee cups and just left the dirty ones in the room. Perhaps additional training is needed! Air conditioning unit in the room made a noise each time it kicked in! Should be fixed.
Spacious room and bathroom. Quiet location.

United KingdomThe reception in the lobby was sadly a let down. The staff were not friendly and a bit grudging when I asked to stow my bags till later. Beware there may be a charge over a certain time. It was the least approachable reception I have encountered. Location is a matter of choice but it is a 20 min walk into the heart of downtown along a busy road, with no cafes or restaurants close to Patrick Street.
The hotel was exceptionally quiet and beautifully furnished in the room and along corridors. We had a jaccuzi bath in one corner of our room and a glowing mock log fire on one wall. Although breakfast was not included, the bistro provided fresh healthy options for any meal. I can recommend the Leaside salad with baked cod and fruit bowl. The staff in the bistro were friendly and helpful.

New ZealandEven though the hotel has a 4-star-rating, not a lot really feels like this: room needs a little makeover, linen were not worthy 4-stars (too soft, rather yellow than white). Unfortunately, staff at the front desk seem to need a bit more training to serve in 4-star-environment: at around 10:30 am (which is around check out time), the front desk was empty. After waiting for more than 5 mins, a housekeeper showed up and looked for someone who could help me (I wanted to extend our stay). Eventually a woman showed up without any word of greeting or apology. While dealing with her, the housekeeper kept on vacuuming the lounge so that it was hard to have a conversation. At another occasion, the same staff at front desk rather attended her private Instagram and WhatsApp, than to be friendly and welcoming to my inquiry. In the spa, no appointments for couple massages were available for several days even though they advertise it in their promo material.
We needed accommodation for a couple of days in St John's and surprisingly the Monastery Hotel was the cheapest available. Also, as we just finished a 3 week-long-hike, we were looking for a place with a spa. The hotel is located a bit out of downtown, which makes it a quiet location. Room was very spacious and very clean. Had a jacuzzi in the room (didn't use it as jacuzzis in a bedroom are a terrible thing! - humidity, water splashes). We were checked-in by a very nice and welcoming male member of staff. Also the bistro, which is attached to the hotel serves good food and is run by very nice and welcoming waitresses.

CanadaMy key card needed to be reset every day. I would reach my room, find out it didnt work (I kept it seperate from my phone and any other cards) then I would have to go to reception to have it activated again. The ice machine was broken. One night at about 11:30pm I needed to call front desk. I couldn't get an answer, even after several attempts

CanadaNot a real issue but sometimes the fridge would come on and annoy me at night. It was right beside the bed in the nightstand.
The bed was super comfortable. I really liked the location away from downtown but not too far. It was very quiet and relaxing. The room was nice and large. We ate at the little Bistro and had a delicious cod burger! All the staff were pleasant and helpful. Also free parking and lots of room to park. Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing stay.

CanadaNot really a matter of didn't like, but given the number of rooms and guests in the hotel, it felt like the bistro wasn't large enough to accommodate that number of people and that, perhaps, they were a bit under-staffed because the bistro staff appeared to be over-worked. Having said that, everything was great, the bistro staff were super pleasant, attentive, and professional and the food was delicious. Just felt like we might be imposing when they seemed too busy.
Warm, welcoming staff, accommodating attitude. Comfortable room, easy to moderate room temperature for comfort, food at the bistro was very nicely prepared.
