How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

The room was situated directly above a bar operated by the same owners, and the music was so loud that the entire room vibrated. The only window overlooked the bins, and when the bar closed, the noise from cleaning, combined with the smell of rubbish, drifted into the room. Additionally, the staff member delivering towels knocked and then entered almost immediately without allowing time for a response. Most concerning of all, the fire detector in the room was missing.

I'm older, 60+, and I'm visiting a friend in WA so, I thought I'd experience Vancouver over a little more than 24 hours. I chose the Cambie because it's so near to places I wanted to see and it was cheap. I hadn't stayed in a hostel in over 30 years. That was in Europe. Hostels are for younger folks who don't mind climbing up into a top bunk and sharing bathrooms and such. It's no frills all the way. So, it was doable but, next time I spend the extra dough and go soft. For younger, solo or travellers with partners, it's ok.

Verified reviewThis hostel is completely infested with bed bugs! We stayed for one night, with the expectation that we would return for another 2 nights later in our trip (post visiting Vancouver Island). When I woke up in the morning my bed was covered in blood and squashed bedbugs that I had been rolling in all night. I took photo evidence and physical proof of bedbugs down to reception where I spoke to the manager Jose Ponte on the phone. He told me that I would get a full refund for my stay and was able to cancel my upcoming booking for free. It has been nearly a month and they have not authorised the refund despite booking.com reaching out to them. The best part is that they knew about this issue all along. After getting off the phone with Jose the lady on reception said "Im sorry about this issue, yeah we would have to completely close down our operations to sort the issue". This was a budget option for our trip but its not worth it. The rooms have barely enough space for 2 people to stand in and the facilities are cramped. I rebooked at a different hotel the next day for £50 more than what I originally paid and it was a much better experience. Do not stay here. (The pictures were taken of the bed in the room and the photo of the bed bugs was taken on their stair case next to their events board so it can be identified)

We welcome more than 400 different guests every week, and unfortunately, situations like this can occasionally happen. However, I can assure you that it is the exception rather than the rule. We are proud to be the most affordable accommodation in downtown Vancouver, giving hundreds of travelers the opportunity to stay in the heart of the city at an accessible price, while other accommodations may charge $500–$600 per night. Verified reviewGreat location, felt very safe, comfy bed. Fun bar downstairs. Luggage storage was super helpful as I had a late night flight day of checkout and didnt want to be lugging around my suitcase all day. I loved the exposed brick and historic look of the building. Bathrooms were always clean. Stayed here once before and am looking forward to a third stay. Close to the skytrain and bus stops. Forgot to pack towel and was able to rent one.

Verified reviewcheck in was very smooth, bed was comfortable, luggage storage, nice bar connected to the hostel. Front desk was accommodating and pleasant. Bathroom was clean. Easy 30 minute metro ride to the airport, I took the first available trip in the morning and made my 7am flight with checked bag with time to spare.
the bunk bed was comfy but a bit flimsy. i was on the top, and could feel the bed moving when the other person moved at night.

Verified reviewI liked the staff for sure, and the fact it is the upstairs to a bar/restaurant. The beds were also comfortable, and linens were clean.
1. No accessibility, and if you have extremely heavy luggage you have to haul it up at least one flight of stairs. 2. The storage they use for luggage is downstairs and extremely dingy, smelly and moldy. You are only allowed to use it for part of a day and then they charge you. 3. There isn't anything very interesting about it, just rooms and a bathroom (whereas most hostels I've stayed at at least had rec rooms, interesting art, things to do, etc.) 4. For what it is and what it offers I thought it was overpriced by about 20%. These are very specific things that affected my trip, I don't believe other travelers will be as nit picky as I was.

Verified reviewThe hostel was in a great neighbourhood and very easy to check-in. I chose a 2-bed female dorm room to save costs and only had a roommate on one evening. Bed was reasonably comfortable and I slept pretty well; it was not too loud in the hostel. I was only really inside when I needed to sleep so I can't comment much otherwise.
It looked as though the men's washroom had undergone a renovation recently, whereas the womens had not. The bathroom was fine overall, but given the old stalls and design, it will be much better when they renovate it to be aesthetically as nice as the men's. There was also quite a lot of women's hair left over on the top bunk bed from previous guests, so I chose the bottom bunk instead.

I saw a staff member throwing away in the kitchen sink a huge amount of dish soap just because it didn’t fit the detergent bottle in the sink he was refilling; such a waste and awful for the environment.

Verified reviewInfested with bedbugs and loud AF until midnight. I can forgive the noise for the price, but the sanitation makes this place unsuitable for human habitation. You'll see reviews almost 10 years into the past with previous bedbug issues, and I'm sad to report as of 2025, they continue to be infested. The top sheets look clean, but you will not be able to see the bedbugs until it's too late. They do not fully strip the mattresses, and keep perpetual linen wrappings on them unchanged. We saw mice scampering the kitchen as well. I've been bitten by their bedbugs and will now have to try to decontaminate or risk spreading to my own home. Not to mention the possibility of disease transmission. When confronted with the bedbug infestation, the manager Jose offered a 25CAD gift card for Malone's a bar next door that they shill a lot. Jose made no attempt to address the actual problem, no promises of applying pest control measures, no suitable remedies for the situation. 10 years of this and it's no wonder they still have mice and bedbugs. The rooms are also unbearably hot with no AC. Again that can be forgiven for the price but the infestation, risk of disease, contamination and danger to the general Vancouver population is unacceptable. For your peace of mind, stay anywhere else.
