How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The view on the mountains and lake are beautiful. Gluten free options are available also for breakfast. Loved the style of the place and the modernised bathrooms.

There were 28-30 C in the room, no A/C, only a fan. It was extremely hot, with the windows and door open, it improved so we could sleep a bit.

Terribly old facility. You have the feeling that people on the corridor are actually in your room. No air con. Very warm. Pillow so thick that it is unpleasant. Difficult to sleep

Verified reviewThe location of the hotel was great. The AC in the room was also a life saver on a hot weekend. I also appreciated that easiness of checking in online. We also had a beautiful view from our balcony.
I think we definitely were paying for the location, rather than the quality of the room. The bed wasn't very comfortable, the pillows were quite flat and the room felt very stuffy without the AC on. When we arrived, it seemed like the cleaners hadn't finished cleaning up as there were two empty beer bottles in the bathroom and dirty dishes on the balcony. We also noticed the bath had some dirt around the side and one of the towels had some yellow stains. The towel was replaced the following day, and the new towel was clean. There were also some spots of dirt on the carpet. We also were woken up multiple times in the night by other guests who were very loud on the stairs, but that's not really the hotels fault. For such a great location it was fine, but there were some small details as mentioned that made it feel disappointing that we had paid so much for the room.

Verified reviewWe stayed one night at La Perla last weekend. While the place was generally pleasant, there were a few inconveniences: the showerhead was broken, the water pressure was quite low, and the parking spot was very tight. With a few improvements, the stay could have been much more comfortable.

It's clean, perfectly located: just at the entrance to the old town, slightly higher, which gives an amazing panoramic view, especially from the roof terrace and the dining room. My single room was comfortable, had a balcony and bathroom. All clean. Coffee machine, tee and coffee available. Only the pillow was uncomfortable for me. The breakfast buffet was fine with hot and cold, sweet and savoury options. However, the choice was not too big. I missed vegetables. All in all, I enjoyed staying in the hotel!

Verified reviewThe staff at Hotel La Perla were all lovely and friendly and polite. I lost an expensive bracelet whilst there, and I believe a member of staff handed it in at reception, which I was very grateful for. We stayed in the villa, which was spacious, and it was cleaned to a high standard. There was plenty of choice for breakfast each morning.
The hotel is a little bit outdated, but this didn't bother us too much. It was very clean, which is what really matters.

Verified reviewThis hotel has a great location, just outside the pedestrian zone of Ascona. Private parking is available. Rooms are comfortable and functional. Views from the restaurant terrace is fantastic and breakfast is very good.

Verified reviewStaff was absolutely amazing, reception staff are really great at their job, and so very nice! The location of the hotel is really great, a few steps away from all the sights and the old town. We also had lake view from our balcony which was awesome! Beds and linens were comfortable, and the breakfast was also really abundant and great!
Overall the structure and the rooms are very dated. I understand that the location is the main selling point of this accommodation at this affordable price, so any renewal would result in a higher price, however it's well maintained so I would still recommend. Parking, while fairly priced, is very very tight and had me quite nervous to park in and out.

Verified reviewThe staff were super nice and friendly… rooms and everything were very clean. The hotel is in a great location close to the bus station and many touristic places. There is a rooftop terrace, it is without service but you can just sit there relax and enjoy the stunning view of the Lake Maggiore and Ascona town. The breakfast was great though there were no much veggies options. Additionally, they generously provided transportation tickets for buses and trains in Ticino during my stay, which was a very thoughtful touch!
The room was not the same as the one I booked, and they showed on the website, it had different view from the balcony. The first photo is from my booking, while the last photo is the actual view of the room they gave me. There weren't many vegetable choices.
