How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Being located over 2500 m, you have to pay extra money getting up there, 43 CHF on person

Verified reviewThe staff were so helpful, friendly and very hard working. The breakfast was simple but delicious and the dinner was absolutely perfect! The location was great, away from the crowds of tourists and waking up to the view of the Matterhorn will stay with me forever
The rooms are very basic, designed for hikers/skiers with no amenities except body soap, no hairdryer and it costs min 54CHF just to get to the hotel from Zermatt

Verified reviewAbsolutely loved staying here and will be back again. Hotel Schwarzsee is the right place if you like to be close to the Matterhorn and nature. Nice place for lunch, hiking up to Hörnli Hütte and surroundings. Rooms with shared bathrooms were clean and perfect for one or two nights. The dinner and breakfast was included. Super nice staff. Damian especially was such a kind and happy person to meet. Being up early for sunrise he even turned on the coffee machine before the official breakfast start. Highly appreciated his cheerful, friendly and happy personality. The best place to stay after the gondolas stop running as it gets super quiet and the mountain view is breathtaking. Can’t wait to return!
The Rösti at dinner was unfortunately not the best. But the view made it up;)

Verified reviewWhat an amazing location away from the crowds down in Zermatt. Only reached by taking the gondola up (verify last ascent/descent or you can hike up/down) to 8,500' from Zermatt. We could see the Matterhorn from our bed! Would wake up early to catch the Alpenglow on the tips of the mountain, stunning! Double room with private bath is basic, but comfy and nicer than the pictures, balcony is shared with no seating, and gives you a front row seat to a glorious Matterhorn view (when it's not cloudy) when no one else is up on the mountain (the crowds are gone when the gondola stops running). Another important advantage is being the first on the trails to beat the crowds, as well as being able to acclimate a little to the high altitude before doing the challenging, but absolutely fantastic hike to the Hornli hut and back, as well as the Glacier Trail. Wait staff in restaurant were great, so friendly and hardworking, always cheerful even though they work a very long day keeping us fed and happy.
Prior to our arrival hotel asked for our dietary restrictions and we conveyed them and they emailed back that "they would take care of everything". However, at dinner, only pork was offered and I am a vegetarian and told the waitstaff this. She asked if I told the kitchen that day that I was vegetarian, because they only prepared one vegetarian meal. I was upset because reception did not tell me that I had to confirm with the kitchen ahead of time that needed a vegetarian meal. Fortunately we were the first to arrive to dinner, so the kitchen was able to prepare a vegetarian alternative (roti with egg). Rooms are very clean and look much better than the photos, but I did notice dog hairs that made their way from deep under the bed. I like dogs, but am allergic to pet dander, so perhaps the hotel can designate rooms that are no pets for guests like me. Food was good, but only 1 waiter serving upwards of 30 people, so arrive early or your wait time will be very long for dinner. Continental breakfast was great first morning with several freshly baked loaves of bread and nice hot croissants, but second morning it seemed like leftover stale bread, quickly ran out of croissants, yogurt, etc. These small inconviences kept it from a perfect 10 rating. I would still, however, recommend you do not miss out on this amazing location.

Verified review・The view from the window was amazing. I could see the Matterhorn from the window. ・The room was clean. I arrived before the check-in time, but they kept my luggage for me. ・Hiking trails are just a 0-minute walk from the inn.
The dinner was delicious but the quantity was not enough for me.

Verified reviewThere is no question: the unique selling point is this hotel's unbeatable location perched high on a mountain overlooking both Zermatt and - far more importantly - the Matterhorn. The view from the hotel and its terrace is utterly breathtaking, with a perfect, unimpeded view of this most iconic of Alpine peaks. Hotel Schwartzsee is situated 100m from the Schwartzsee cable car station, which is the only practical way of accessing the hotel. If you're a skier (not that we are), this means that you can be on the slopes long before the cable car starts bringing skiers up from Zermatt, and the slopes were still open when we visited the second week in April 2025. In summer, it would be an ideal base for hiking, although there was too much snow for this when we were there. Because of the hotel's remote location, accommodation is on a half board basis, with breakfast and a three course dinner included in the room rate. The food was hearty with a choice between a meat-based and a vegetarian option for main course. The first night the main course choice was between roast chicken and mashed potatoes or a tomato gnocchi, whilst the second evening, fondue (accompanied by bread, rosti and pickled gherkins and onions) was served for all. A Muslim family at the next table asked if their fondue could be made without using alcohol (given that fondue includes white wine) and the chef was happy to oblige. If you are the hungry type, the restaurant offers a more extensive lunch menu that caters for the skiers/day tourists. If you're trying to optimise your budget, the hotel offers some rooms with shared bathroom facilities - ours was a four bed room, with bunk beds and a sink in the room. An absolute highlight was seeing chamois grazing around the hotel. Wi-fi coverage was good enough to be able to conduct business meetings.
If you are looking to stay here, you need to factor in the cost of the cable car from Zermatt, which costs CHF 31 each way. This is an absolutely legitimate cost given that you're using the infrastructure. What irked us is that because we were staying overnight, we couldn't buy a return ticket (as this is apparently only valid for a day). The 4 bed room was fine space wise and the shared bathroom facilities weren't a problem. However, the bunk beds were not particularly comfortable and we didn't sleep well, although that might be partly attributable to the fact that it's at 2600m altitude.

Verified reviewThe Matterhorn is literally in front of you.
The room is warm and clean overall, which is appreciated. However, the duvet cover is quite worn out and has visible holes, which detracts from the comfort. Additionally, the bathtub was not properly cleaned — there was noticeable grime that could still be rubbed off the surface.

Verified reviewLocation cannot be beat. Had en suite room and was surprised by how nice it was. Even had cleaning service each day which didn’t expect on the mountain.
Breakfast was acceptable but nothing to brag about. Warm eggs and warm something else would make a big difference. Cold hard boiled eggs aren’t exactly heart warming

Verified reviewWe had a great stay overall! The staff was wonderful, friendly, attentive, and always ready to help. The dinner was delicious. The location was simply amazing, with the Matterhorn practically within reach, offering breathtaking views.
However, there is room for improvement. The cleanliness could be better, and the bed linens should be of higher quality—without any holes. It would also be great if the management invested in some updates to the rooms. With these improvements, this place could be truly exceptional!
