How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewT This is a superb, clean, relaxing and very well organised hostel that we definitely recommend. Our double room was in perfect condition with shared bathroom that was equally well kept. There are some other communal areas in equally great shape and they can fix laundry and such. We stayed three nights and had a night bus the fourth day. The hostel let us keep backpacks there and use their place all day and evening for free which was really nice of them. The desk is always staffed and they are very helpful. It’s in a nice neighbourhood with lots of cafes and restaurants close to the main square. There is laundry service, and please use it, but take care. Unfortunately they messed up quite a bit. We got several clothes that didn’t belong to us, which hopefully found its way back via the reception, but unfortunately we did loose some of our own stuff. San Gil is nice, but it’s the adventure trips that make it so very well worth it! We booked everything via the hostel which was super easy. The activities are then via other companies but it didn’t seem like the hostel made it more expensive for us. We did the cave (cueva de la vaca with Gua-Iti), the white water rafting (Rio Suarez with Colombia Rafting Expediciones) and paragliding (Chicamocha with Parapente Chicamocha). Everything was superb! Note that the caves you go by yourself to the travel agent Gua-Iti by bus to Curiti. That wasn’t so well explained but very easy to do. You can make that trip after lunch and it is absolutely worth it. The other activities were full day events with pickup at the hostel and lunch included. We visited the Juan Curi waterfalls by ourself by catching a bus, which was super easy and a great place to visit. Kind of wish we had done the rappelling too, but we were short of time then.

Verified reviewAmazing place to stay in San Gil. Extremely friendly owner and staff. They give you all the necessary information you need about tours on arrival and all the tours are competitively priced. The hostel itself is sociable and they host events most evenings (eg Tejo, games nights, curry night) which makes it very easy to meet people. The kitchen is very well equipped and spacious.
The private room we had was very close to the entrance and the main reception so could be a little noisy, plus there was no AC so the room could get a little hot with only a fan. There is filtered water available but it works through a drip system of some kind which meant that during our stay 50% of the time there was no water available which was a little annoying particularly if it was late at night / early in the morning.

Verified reviewOne of my favourite ever hostels - the staff, especially the reception and the owner Shaun, go above and beyond. The social vibe is great, the activities they help organise and evening events can't be beaten. This hostel really became like a home away from home in the week we stayed.
Beds are VERY firm (not necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of!)

Verified reviewGreat hostel near the centre of San Gil. Our double room was comfortable and a decent size for two people and we really liked that it had a safe for valuables. The staff are excellent and help you organise lots of activities, such as caving, rafting, horse riding, etc. We also got to try the Colombian game of tejo, which was super fun! There's a good sized kitchen for if you're self catering.
The bubbles in the jacuzzi don't work. 😞

Our room was a bit too noisy because it was at the street side.

Verified reviewThe staff was friendly.
I was on the upper bed of the bunk bed. There was no ladder to climb on it and it was shaking A LOT. There Is no bar to prevent you from falling down. And the shelf where you can put your stuff hangs quite far away from you. My roommate who was also on the upper bed of a bunk bed said: well, if this collapses, at least we're laying on the upper bed, so no bed will fall down on us. And that's exactly what I thought as well...
Thanks for your comment. Im sorry, I know you wrote in advance and really wanted a bottom bunk. We did our best and usually we can accommodate this request but we have had a full hostel and many people making similar requests. The shelves are 20cm from the pillow and the plugs are 10cm in that room which we haven't had complaints about before but we will monitor. We know sleeping on a top bunk can be challenging for people not use to it and Im sorry that you didnt get the experience in our hostel you hoped for. Our friendly staff are always available to help fix these sorts of problems and we could have easily switched you to another bunk with ladder or room the following day. I know that doesnt help you now but maybe future guests will read this and know they just need to ask. After reading your comment we have gone in and tightened the bolts on your bed to make it sturdier and we are reviewing all the bunk beds today. Enjoy the rest of your travels.
