Itarema, Brazil
Ari, the owner, made my stay feel both comfortable and homey. The room was exactly as advertised, with an exceptionally comfortable bed. Breakfasts were delicious—especially the homemade cakes. There was even a dedicated space for kite gear, which was very convenient. Ari’s staff were professional, attentive, and excellent throughout my stay. What really stood out was Ari himself. He’s a wonderful host, and I enjoyed many great conversations with him. He offered spot-on recommendations, from the best restaurants to local kiting conditions, and even organized downwinders. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ari’s Pousada to anyone looking for a welcoming and memorable stay.
Ilhabela, Brazil
If you’re looking for basic accommodation that is very close to the beach, then this is ideal. The lady who did breakfast/cleaning was very smiley and brought me fresh eggs every morning. It was clean. The fridge was cold. There is a small shop down the road. The bus stops outside the property.
I couldn’t understand the exceptional reviews - it wasn’t exceptional by Western standards. I was so disappointed. Very basic rooms - quite dated. Huge gaps around the door frames which allow for insects and let the light in during the night. When I checked in to the room there was an enormous insect on the back door. I had done my research on Ilhabela and was expecting insects but this thing was the size of my hand. I went back to tell the receptionist, she obviously didn’t want to touch it either and so sent two children to get rid of the insect with a broom. The kids were shocked by this thing which obviously wasn’t a normal occurrence and they managed to brush it off eventually. It put me off though, especially knowing it could come back through the gaps. No plug socket near the bed to charge in a phone at night. There isn’t anything nearby apart from the beach - bear this in mind if you are going off season (if the weather is bad, there is nothing to do) and if you don’t have a car it’s quite isolating. There is one restaurant over the road but the local restaurant up the hill was closed when I tried to visit. The breakfast offering was average and some mornings it was very noisy - families with young children. The climb to the rooms at the top isn’t good - there isn’t anyone to help carry luggage so you’re on your own. I counted 72 steps to my room and I wasn’t even at the top.
