How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewLoved our stay, the host are really lovely and the room was absolutely great. The little kitchen and the sofa located outside the balcony were great to a spot to make a cup of tea/coffee and chilled after a long day tour. The facilities were great and cleaned, everything was great. This is best place we had been come across since we landed in Costa Rica. I would highly recommended if you are going to La Fortuna for few nights.

Verified review+++ The owners The night tour in the gardens The Sloth Tour The view from the room ++ The rooms The air conditionner The pool The restaurant Being walking distance to everything Can't think of anything that wasn't at least excellent or amazing. Piece of advise to people visiting La Fortuna: do NOT pay 20$ to go to the Bogarin Trail, a super turistic area looking like a park. Instead, book the Sloth tour with Armando. You will see more wildlife and will see it in their natural inhabitat in the forest, together with someone super nice.

Verified reviewThis small, family run hotel provided me with very warm hospitality, care, and attention. I joined the free night tour and got some incredible wildlife photos, and saw about 7 sloths and an anteater on the sloth walk. The highlight, however, were the wonderful hosts. Thank you, Angela and Armando!

Verified reviewNice room. But just few units. not much storage. facility pictures much nicer than actual. we paid $100/night which was overpriced for the facility.
The pictures in the booking.com gives an impression of an elegant facility. Reality of the facility doesn't match the pictures

Verified reviewThe location was ideal and very close to town and all the activities we did. It couldn’t have been more convenient. We had a rental car and we were able to park right on the property! Rooms look brand new and are well appointed with up to date furnishings. My family of four shared the tree frog room which had a great view of the back property and gardens from the outdoor porch. We watched birds and butterflies every morning and evening. The extra porch space was great and almost felt like a separate living area. Really helped making sharing the room between 4 adults more comfortable. The porch had a small kitchenette with a mini fridge, sink and coffee maker. There were dishes and silverware and coffee supplied with the room which we really appreciated. The rain shower was excellent and I took multiple hot showers which can be hard to come by in Costa Rica. Also the fact that we could use the sister, hotel xilopalo, facilities was also great. And it’s very close! They had a complete tour booking desk where we booked a coffee tour from and got some information on local hikes. They also had a full restaurant where we had dinner one night and breakfast one morning. There is also a pool and surrounding gardens but we never used it. Armando and Angela were so accommodating. Armando gave us a mini night tour of the property where we saw lizards, bugs, birds, butterflies and frogs including the red eyed tree frog! And then we did the sloth tour with Armando where he took so much time with us and brought us to 3 different locations to spot a total of 10 sloths! 2 of which were super close. He also helped me spot some birds after I told him I really liked birds. They both went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable.
Nothing! My only watch out is the rooms are up one flight of stairs so if someone has trouble with stairs or carrying luggage up this would just be noteworthy. But it was no issue for us!

Verified reviewExcellent location, value, and customer service. Angela always made sure we had everything we needed and Armando gave us a night walk on the property to see frogs with a surprise visit from an armadillo! The room was so comfortable with a view of the volcano. There is a spacious balcony with a couch, chairs, a fridge, even coffee! And I recommend you have breakfast there and have dinner, as well. The best French toast I think I’ve ever had! Arenal Monara is in a great location, just a few blocks from the main street. I can’t recommend this hotel enough.

Verified reviewThe best hotel we have stayed in. We have just finished a 6 month trip around the world, we treated ourselves to a nice hotel to end the trip on. And this place was perfect! Angela took her time to show us around all the facilities and the room. There is a pool and pool table that you can use and a lovely restaurant within the hotel grounds. Armando was amazing, his free night garden tour was great to see frogs and maybe a snake if you're lucky! And his sloth tour might have been the best thing we had done in the 6 months! I told him that I'd never seen a toucan so he spent time finding us toucans in different places and listened for their calls. We ended up seeing 3 toucans as well as sloths! I can't reccomend this place enough. Oh and the view of the volcano from the room wasn't bad either! 😍

Verified reviewWe stayed three nights at Arsenal Monara for three nights. The lodge is a short walk to the town center. All the rooms are on the second floor. Our room was spotless and spacious. The back balcony of each room has a kitchenette, comfortable couch and table that overlook the woods in the distance. We saw two toucans, scarlett Macaws and many colorful birds from the front and back balconies. Breakfast was delicious, and we could see hummingbirds and other beautiful birds while eating. The owner of the lodge was very responsive and nice. She did our laundry and returned them neatly folded a few hours later. We highly recommend the lodge if you are in La Fortuna.

Verified reviewThis fantastic property is nestled within the rainforest, on the outskirts of town, just a 3 minute walk from several bars, restaurants and tour operators. The room itself is spacious, clean and very modern. An enormous balcony looks out at the lush green jungle, and is equipped with a fridge and drip coffee machine (along with local coffee!) The real steal to this property however are the hosts - Angela and Arnando. Arnando took us out on a complimentary night walk, which was intimate and equally rewarding - we saw a plethora of animals that we were unable to replicate on paid tours around Costa Rica. His day-time tour is equally impressive and is absolutely worth booking. Well worth booking to avoid touristy/group tours. Overall, an exceptional property and fantastic hosts.

Verified reviewThe place is really great. They have very nice hosts. It's actually attached to the older place which has a great breakfast restaurant and a reception where you can book the activities. It also includes a pool and the garden. The facilities are new with a big balcony and the kitchenette. The apartment also has a view to the volcano. Everything was amazing during our stay and I am really happy I have booked this place. A few minutes to downtown. Easy to access. A small night walk in the garden is included and Armando is really a great guide. We also took the sloth tour with him and we saw really amazing animals! It was definitely worth it! I definitely recommend this place to stay in La Fortuna.

Verified reviewWe had a lovely stay here! The owners were really welcoming and friendly. The first night we even got a free and private night tour from Armando, it was one of the best night tours on our trip, we saw frogs, snakes, liguanas, birds, racoons and he gave us so much information about them, he took his time and you could see he loved taking us on this tour, which is basically just a walk around there private garden/forest behind there hotel. We loved the breakfast area where you can spot toecans and all kinds of other birds right in front of you. The location of the hotel is also perfect because you can just walk to the town nearby and don't need to take the car to go explore the town. The room was very spacious and clean and had everything you needed. We would definitly come back here if we visit la Fortuna again.
Hello Matthias! Thank you for your kind words. It was a great pleasure for Monara to have you here, and above all, we're so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you very much. Best regards. Armando & Ángela

Verified reviewI cannot recommend this gem enough. The views were wonderful from our room and it was easy to get to breakfast next door where you can see different birds, we were lucky enough to see a toucan! Angela and Armando who run the hotel are the best, accommodating and made sure to check into make sure we had every we needed. Armando gave us a tour around the property in the night and we saw amazing frogs, insects and even a bat! We did the paid tour with Armando who honestly was worth every penny and more. He made sure to help us get amazing footage of the sloths, Monkeys and birds. No guide even compared to Armando for the rest of our Costa Rican trip. Angela also had the best towels I’ve ever come across, even compared with 5 star hotels.
There are animals near and on the property so it can get loud but we soon got use to the noises.
Hello Eva, We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for visiting us.
