We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

GermanyWe had a wonderful and unforgettable stay with Elliot and Mark. The hosts are so helpful and we’ve got many information of the nature, culture and history of Costa Rica. The spacious and well equipped accommodation is located in a beautiful place. If we get the chance to come back one day we will definitely stay there again.

Well, what can we say? This is an amazing place to stay in the Bijagua area! We arrived and we were greeted by Elliette who gave us some freshly made cookies and a delightful drink. She then showed us to our cabin which was fantastic, with a deck that looks out onto the gardens and jungle. Immediately in front of the deck was a feeder with bananas that was attracting a whole host of beautiful birds, including Toucans, Oropendula ( two varieties), Aracaris, Tanagers, Honeycreepers, and even a Long-tailed Manakin (new lifer for us!). If you are a keen birder this is the place for you to sit and enjoy a coffee and the birds. The cabin itself is perfect, the bed is very comforable, the shower was hot, the kitchen is well stocked. The breakfast is delivered to your cabin in the evening, and you can prepare the eggs in the morning when you need to, so that if you have an early tour you are all set. The breakfast by the way is fantastic, with eggs, fruit, yogurt, pinto de gallo, salsa with avacado, fresh home made bread, butter and home made jelly!! We couldn't eat it all for breakfast and had some leftovers for lunch. Also, the eggs are the best we have had, and the water from the tap is tastey and drinkable. Elliette is just the most delightful host, and extremely knowledgeable with many recommendations for people to connect with and things to do in the area. She and her partner Mark make you feel as if you are staying at home, but in paradise! We think you get the idea that we just loved this place and the people who call it their home. We consider that we have made good friends in the short space of our four night stay. If you get the chance to stay here, just do it!

United StatesWould not change a thing.
This property was a complete delight to stay at. The breakfast is delivered the night before so if you bird or want to sleep in you can prepare and eat it on your schedule. The breakfast is prepared by the owners and is fabulous with fresh fruit, homemade bread, fresh eggs, cheese, gallo pinto and Costa Rican coffee. The owner has a Biology Degree and you can see this in the gardens and the grounds. If your looking for a very special treat in an accommodation this is the place.

United KingdomThere was nothing I didn't like about the cabin or our stay at Tierra Altas.
The cabins were clean, comfortable and gave a sense of really being in nature. The amount of wildlife we saw from our cabins or within the grounds was astonishing. My favourite of all the places we stayed on our trip

NorwayVery pleasant staff, very good living conditions, clean and elegant, and the best of all: a garden with lots of birds, including Tody Motmot, Snowcap, Black-crested Coquette and Rufous-Winged Tanager. The only thing that slowed it down a bit was that they had a dog and a cat that were allowed to roam freely in the garden. Not exactly the best option for bird enthusiasts like us. But the dog was intelligent and didn't make any noise. Despite this: A perfect place!
Tierras Altas is a much better place to stay than Heliconias Lodge! And if you pay an entrance ticket of USD 14 per person, you can access the trails of Heliconias. The two lodges are only 300 meters apart!

United StatesThe hosts have taken a plot of land at the base of Tenorio and turned it into a secret garden full of birds and flowers and trees. The apartment was lovely, comfortable, and equipped with everything one needs. They brought a complete breakfast the evening before, so you can warm it up whenever you are ready.

We liked everything! Beautiful grounds to explore and such a wonderful variety of birds to watch, just sitting outside on the balcony. The chalets are really lovely, with very attractive woodwork, and the bed was very comfortable. Extremely knowledgable and helpful hosts. Super breakfast delivered to the chalet each evening, to be enjoyed the next morning when you decide. You cook your own eggs. Great idea!

United StatesI am so glad we found this excellent place. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. EveryThing. The location was perfect. We had a car so the drive to town was short and easy. The lodge sits next to the Heliconia Inn so we went there easily. Glad we stayed here though. More importantly, the hostess was so accommodating with our needs and our kids needs. So grateful to her. She made us a scrumptious homemade breakfast every evening to prepare in the morning. Fresh eggs to prepare as we liked. We rented both villas for our family of four so as to spread out and it was fabulous. The cabins were immaculate and cute with modern, stylish wood accents and unique murals. Lovely. Cool and quiet at night. The WILDLIFE is spectacular. She has bananas hanging out to feed the birds daily and the monkeys also visit. We saw more animals here than anywhere else. I even saw a tapir across the road at night. Thank you Elliete for your graciousness and we will be back.

With no doubt the most comfortable place we've been to : it's like a studio with all the equipment needed, matress is of good quality with extra blankets, bathroom is spacious, extra clean and everything seems brand new. The whole place is very quiet and we could observe the most amazing birds just in front of our terrace. The home made breakfast were delicious and generous. Thanks again for welcoming us. United StatesBetween Bijagua and the property, a short portion of the road is packed dirt and gravel. Simply driving slowly is enough to make it without issue.
Our one night stay at Aves de Tierras Altas was a highlight of our week's vacation in Costa Rica. The host is a retired biology professor interested in conservation and sustainability, and her passion for connection to the environment is clear. The place to stay is fantastic— it's a cozy, inclusive cabin for a family, with modern facilities and beautiful hand-painted mural art on the walls. The cabin was spotless and well-appointed, with plenty of pillows, towels, and linens, as well as a flashlight for night excursions and two hammocks underneath the house for lounging. The kitchen is small but fully functional, with a stove, pots, pans, olive oil, knives, silverware, and anything you could need for cooking and eating, along with gorgeous polished wood countertops. We very much enjoyed our breakfast delivered to our room the night before, full of local delicacies, eggs, toast and fresh fruit, some of which she grows on the property. From our private covered deck that overlooked a beautiful lush rainforest backyard, we were able to see so many incredible birds from just 20 feet away, including a toucan and other colorful animals. We saw more of Costa Rican bird wildlife from the deck than anywhere else during our vacation! We also were able to explore the hiking trails on the property, seeing a frog pond, orchids, and banana trees. The host and her family were so kind to us, sharing all kinds of valuable tips for exploring local hidden gems -- including the nearby restaurant Soda El Sabor de Dona Carmen, which had a fabulous menu and an incredible free butterfly garden. If you are considering Tenorio Volcano park, the Rio Celeste hike, or the Bijagua area, you can't go wrong staying here.

United StatesThe road going up to the house is rough, we did not have a 4x4 and made it just fine! Just be aware and drive cautiously, and it might help to arrive during daylight hours, but don't let it deter you from this place!
