How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

It was a great stay. I did confuse the code sent by Booking.com with a separate code they sent and had difficulty getting in the gate.

The code we send you was in the chat section and had all the instructions required to check in. As a feedback for you, we try to contact our guests through varios channels: booking chat, WhatsApp or iMessage, that is why it is so important that your phone number is correctly indicated in your profile. When we tried to reach you your phone number didn’t work. Later we noticed that your phone number in the platform was incorrect, we could verify that when you called us. Verified reviewGreat communication with host! Made sure we had all instructions needed. Hammock on deck was perfect! Great size and space for a couple, nice layout & private-seems larger than looked like in listing.
Wish it was walking distance to town. Because of that it would be nice if host had a little milk/cream in the fridge for morning coffee/tea.

Verified reviewPrivate cabin, parking, hot water for shower, full kitchen and AC was on point ❣️ We LOVED that it had a washer in the cabin and the WiFi was so fast. Also the satellite had English Channels with HBO, etc. The view was gorgeous, near shopping centers for groceries, perfect location. We loved it and Karolina was a fabulous host. Verified reviewThe cabin we stayed in at Hoya Azul is BEAUTIFUL! If you appreciate the beauty of natural wood, combined with great tile work, you should visit this place! The construction work is really interesting, real craftsmanship. The air conditioning unit in the bedroom made sleeping very comfortable, and kept the whole place cool. Good kitchen facilities. A washing machine, so we were able to clean our clothes, always a necessity in Costa Rica’s heat. Just down the road is the Diria Coffee Tour, which was really interesting. Great location for visiting nearby national parks. Great communication with hosts. Super secure, as the property is gated. Highly recommended

Verified reviewThe location was good, house appliances etc are very modern, we got a room with a queen size bed and a bunk bed so the lodging is enough for 4 persons. Grocery stores are nearby and can be reached on foot and the bus station for long distance (to San Jose, Nicoya and few more destinations) is also nearby. What we like the most is because the owner has a good awareness of environmental protection. We're encouraged to do waste separation. All we need to do is to put our trash in the correct bins they prepared outside in the yard (6 bins) and they will take care of the rest. They have a charging station for electric vehicle and planned to install solar cells soon in the future. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The only thing that we can criticize is the WiFi. It's rather slow so that it's difficult for us to do our work which requires a fast and stable internet connection. I'm not sure if the problem lies on the network the provider had in that area to start with, or whether it is the problem of the router and the signal repeater. But altogether it was a nice stay there and I would recommend it without a doubt.
Hello Ana! First of all, thank you for such a detailed feedback! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Hoja Azul. I just would like to clarify something related with the internet speed: I talked with your husband during your stay here, and he told me about an issue he was having with the internet, not with the speed, but with an specific spot in the house where he didn’t have good wifi reception. Our internet speed contract is 100mbps (upload and download) which usually varies between 50 - 90mbps, not less than that. So saying that our internet speed is slow is a little bit unfair. When your husband told me he was not having signal in that spot I offered him to do something immediately to improve the signal there, but he said it was a minor issue, and he could work in another place. Also, he said it was weird, because he didn’t have good signal with his computer but he had good signal with his cellphone, which is odd, and could be related with an issue with his computer as well. By the way, we have never had a complaint about our internet service. After you left I personally tested the wifi signal in that place and actually it was less intense than the rest of the house. We immediately proceeded to install a repeater in the house so now the signal is even all over the place. Verified reviewWe really enjoy Hoja Azul for its tranquility. It’s a beautiful place to relax from stressful and demanding responsibilities. We would have like to sleep better in a king size bed as my husband is a tall 6”2 man. A double bed doesn’t cut it for us. However, the space is wonderful and we loved our stay. The host was very helpful and the kitchen is adequate for making meals - well equipped.

Only that we didn’t stay longer! we booked this place as a last minute stopover between La Fortuna and Montezuma. Now that we know how beautiful the surrounding area is, we will spend more time at Hoja Azul next time we’re in Costa Rica.
