How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGloria & Sergio are wonderful hosts. They kept in touch via WhatsApp and sorted everything for us, including a driver from San Jose and the boat to San Francisco. They run their own tours, so you are guaranteed a small group. Sergio is very knowledgeable about the wildlife and spotted so much for us. We saw green turtles laying eggs and spotted a plethora of wildlife on the canal tour in the national park the next morning. After the tour, Sergio dropped us off at the park office at Tortuguero to walk the Jaguar Trail & to visit Tortuguero, picking us up later. The rooms are clean, comfortable and with everything you need. Breakfast was delicious. We borrowed a kayak to take our own tour and did some walks from the door. We didn't have time to enjoy the pool. San Francisco is a small, super-friendly village with a supermarket, bars and restaurants. We saw monkeys, snakes and lots of birds whilst walking in the area. A great, quiet place where the locals are all extremely welcoming.
They didn't accept a credit card despite assuring me they did. Just be sure to have cash instead. There is no ATM in the area.

Verified reviewThe place is very nice and there is going to be a little pool, too. The owner is very helpful. Her brother is giving private boat tours and we have seen many animals thanks to him.

Verified reviewThe lodging was super, Gloria is a great host and we also took morning tour around Tortuguero Canals with Asley and he was simply amazing, he knows so much about the area, about all the species of animals and plants, any of his tours would be great choice.

Verified reviewGloria was lovely. Her and her family helped us make the most of the time we had in San Francisco and Tortuguero. We really enjoyed our boat tours (morning and evening). We definitely were happy with our choice to stay in San Francisco rather than busy Tortuguero while still being able to get there and back easily. We wished we had more time to use the canoes!
Not a negative, but maybe something for other travellers to be aware: as this place is a bit more "remote" (which we were looking for and enjoyed), others might find the restaurant/bar options and other touristy amenities a bit limited. But again, you'll have these just a boat ride away in Tortuguero, so enjoy the quiet!

Verified reviewGloria was a wonderful host. We had a great time staying there. We booked the guided 3h30 tour with her brother that is a Must do ! Very clean the place and the pool ! We were very happy staying in San Francisco instead of tortuguero as we were among the locals and it’s way cleaner and quieter.

Verified reviewA wonderful family run small unit with Gloria supervising our needs and Seve taking us on an educational river tour. He is an expert on local wildlife and the habitation. Even a downpours didn't prevent us finding many birds at close quarters. Highly recommend or those wishing to investigate the National park.

Verified reviewGloria and Sergio were lovely hosts. We had a great stay with them and would highly recommend. The rooms are simple but clean and very comfortable and we had everything we needed. We took the tour with Sergio and so glad we did, it was more bespoke as there were only a 4 of us and he was incredibly knowledgeable. We saw so much wildlife and it was an experience we’ll never forget. The rooms are in the San Francisco area rather than the main part of Tortuguero but we liked being away from the hustle and bustle and Gloria organised for a boat to take us to the town (10 mins down the river) whenever we needed so really easy.

Verified reviewBeds were so comfortable. The new pool was a fabulous place to cool off after a day in the national park. Incredible day and night tours with Sergio who was amazing at spotting the local wildlife. He knows so much about the area and loves sharing it with guests Sergio was also happy to take and pick us up from Tortugeuro so we could explore the town.

Verified reviewWonderful 2 day stay! We contemplated staying at a large resort on Park grounds, but the quality of the canal and night tours at Cabanas Daneysha are superior to the large groups that the large resorts offer. We got very individualized service. If you’re coming to Tortuguero National Park, stay here, you will not regret it. Gloria and Sergio are very customer focused!

Verified reviewLovely, homely and very clean room. It had air con which was really welcome in the heat. There are only 4 rooms (I think) so it’s a quiet, restful place to be. The breakfasts were incredibly nice. Gloria and her family are lovely, kind, gentle people who make you feel very welcome. We saw a toucan & humming bird in the garden. We took the wildlife boat tour offered by the property which was excellent. It’s easy to get to - you are met in Pavona and again at the dock in San Francisco.
All good

Verified reviewThe breakfast was excellent. Gloria made great tasting food and was flexible in the timing of breakfast. The location in San Francisco was very good for any tours. It is also quieter than Tortuguero which we liked.
The bed was very uncomfortable which is difficult for us given that we are older. 65+. The nighttime walking hike was unsatisfactory due to difficulty understanding the guide and not much to see. The river cruise was very good and the guide, Gloria’s brother was very good.

Communication around transportation was questionable. Location was at an awkward distance from Tortuguero with limited service.

Verified reviewGloria was an excellent host. It’s in a much quieter area than busy and touristy Tortuguero. The night walk/boat trip was brilliant. The village has lots of birds including toucans. Lots of places to eat/supermarket. Easy to get to Tortuguero on a boat taxi.
Would have been good to have breakfast included If you are heading south after your sray here-it is possible on public transport for half the price of a transfer but be ready for a boat/collectivo and 2 bus changes all day experience if you go that way!
