How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewOur host was super friendly and helpful in every way, and the staff did everything possible to make our stay comfortable. The location is only a short walk to a number of good restaurants and a supermarket, which was very convenient. We booked a larger room, which had plenty of space. Our room was upstairs with no elevator, but the staff helped us up and down with our luggage. The cooked to order breakfast was great and many choices were offered. In almost every way, our stay was like a visit to a nice friend.
This is an older property, not modern, but was well-maintained except for some lights which didn't work in our room. The shower in our room required going up and down a few steps, which may be challenging for some people.

Verified reviewThis was a gem of a stay! The owner and staff were so friendly and accommodating, even when our plans changed. We enjoyed their hospitality and the comforts of a unique home. The breakfast was amazing, and they even provided wine and snacks on the beautiful patio in the evening. We walked about 400 meters to a grocery store and a variety of restaurants - very safe area. About 20 minutes from the airport (plus a little traffic at the busy times). The room was comfortable and met our needs.

Robert, so sorry you were unhappy--Were you in the Friendly?? If so--you are correct--We do need a New Mattress there. Wish you had said something. We might have been able to do something for you- As an innkeeper, I prefer for people to tell me if they feel something is not correct-- That way , we can fix it & make it right for the next people. Verified reviewThe breakfast at Cariari B&B was exceptional, with lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, excellent bread, and eggs cooked to order. Both Laurie and Miriam showed us warm hospitality and made our stay extremely pleasant. We would definitely stay here again.
We had a few issues with the lighting and with a noisy fan in our room. However, overall the accommodations were very comfortable.

Verified reviewEverything - Laurie and Miriam are FABULOUS in every way. I felt like I was at home, or perhaps staying with a favourite aunt. It felt like home. And the breakfast, oh dear - it's a shared table (not great if you're not a morning person, but I muddled through and thoroughly enjoyed it) and Laurie moaned that she "didn't have much this morning" and then served up enough food to feed a horde of hungry adolescents. Love all the animals, the terrace is magical...I could go on. So very glad I found this place and I'll see you next year :-)

Verified reviewLocation to the convention center and dining. Staff was wonderful! We were joyfully welcomed upon arrival by Laurie and Miriam and offered a beverage. We got the benefit of calling this place home for 8 nights. Laurie is so hospitable, wanting you to enjoy the area, planning trips, arranging transportation to help make your life easier. I was blessed in that she let me be her join her on outings to the markets, stores, and yoga and tea with friends on the terrace. She even treated us and a friend to 2 of the most delicious homemade dinners we experienced our whole trip. Also whipping up a yummy blueberry French toast casserole for breakfast. We felt like family in her home. We were fortunate to find a room at the last minute after our hotel reservation mix up. Which ended up being a blessing in disguise! There are 3 spacious, lovely suites. The upper terrace is an oasis to sit and listen to the river and view the mountains. The lack of AC was not an issue because there weather was not humid even with daily downpours. Windows open and fans were all we needed to be comfortable. We felt safe walking to the convention center and DoubleTree hotel. Laurie or Heraldo would drive us up the hill to the pedestrian bridge early each morning. Laurie is an exceptional hostess and now friend!

Verified reviewThe breakfast was incredible! Fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese, gluten free cereal greek yogurt, and coffee all at 6am to accommodate our schedule. Loved chatting with Laurie about Costa Rica and life in general. Was a little tight for a family of 4 8n one room but we made it work.
Wish we would have known there were 2 dogs and a cat on the property in case someone was allergic. But the three animals were friendly.
