How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location was perfect as it was very close to the main part of La Fortuna, but just off to the side in a quieter neighbourhood. There was a shop nearby and the hotel was easy to locate. The key and door system was very user friendly and I felt very secure whilst also knowing I could come and go at any time without any problems. The room was very comfortable and the kitchen area and balcony were super nice. The wifi was also good. Contact from the hotel before my arrival was also good. I loved that I could buy my own food and use the lovely kitchen area as this helped me to save money.
THe price paid at the hotel was higher than quoted by booking.com, although the hotel put this down to taxes, but it added an extra twenty dollars. Prior to arriving I was assured that the hotel would assist me with the booking of tours once I arrived, but on arrival the receptionist just told me how to book online tickets for the different attractions and advised me to use Uber, whereas I was looking for an actual tour so had to go elsewhere. Which was fine but I felt the information given before my arrival was misleading.

Verified reviewOur stay at Casa Macaw was great. It was a shared apartment with 5 individual guest rooms. There was a common area for kitchen, living room and balcony. The room included a bathroom and it was smaller than expected. The complex was securely gated for residents and was walking distance to restaurants and convenience stores. Room was clean and staff were nice, helpful and responsive to our messages. Breakfast was available for purchase for $7 and it was a good portion size. We recommend trying out the pancakes, it was delicious! Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Verified reviewThe facility is modern, clean and well kept. A/C works well - which is necessary in La Fortuna. Location is good.
Common areas - kitchen, living room did not have A/C.

Verified reviewVery nice place to stay. It’s just 5 guest rooms in the building so very quiet. The beds were possibly the most comfortable I’ve had in Costa Rica! Everything appeared new and in great shape. Fabiola at the front desk was very helpful in providing good suggestions on where to eat and what to do in La Fortuna. Thanks!

Verified reviewThe property was new and spotless. I loved the sharing kitchen and balcony. The location was 5 minute walk from middle of everything. There is a supermarket 2 minutes away. The breakfast was made fresh and delicious. The girl at reception booked all my excursions without hesitation. I would definitely recommend this property. I felt really safe as a solo traveller. I will be back .

Verified reviewVery Clean, nice kitchen, 5 min walk to La Fortuna square, 10 min drive to Fortuna Waterfall. This is next to a small boutique hotel so staff on site and breakfast is only $7.
Neighborhood can be noisy. A/C shuts off at night so we had to turn off and back on.

Verified reviewThe breakfast was simple but satisfying. The location was very convenient only being a few blocks from the centre of town. Lots of restaurants and supermarkets close by. It is located on a quiet side street. We had to park out on the sidewalk, but there were no issues or security concerns in this neighborhood. Would highly recommend this facility to anyone.

Verified reviewModern and clean facilities - the bedroom in particular was super comfortable and light. The kitchen came fully stocked with everything we needed to cook some meals. The hotel staff were very friendly and helped us to book our onward travel to Monteverde at a good price
A little distance (10 mins) from the town square. The kitchen and attached lounge wasn’t air conditioned so it was difficult to relax here.

Verified reviewMy stay was fantastic. The room was great and the shared balcony is a lovely addition. The whole place (including communal areas) is spotlessly clean. The real highlight for me was the attentiveness of the staff, who were all fantastic and especially helpful booking transport for me in advance and being available for check in despite my flight/arrival being delayed. Thank you to you all!

Verified reviewThe Casa Macaw seemed to be undergoing a little renovation and the business was handled by the Hotel Alicia next door. The staff was very friendly and helped me with my transportation outside of La Fortuna. Shower hot, no real traffic noise, and very close to the town and many restaurants. There is a kitchen for use. And plenty of AC.
There were two outlets that were out of order but the others were working. No other complaints.
