How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location, everything is brand new and clean. Fully equipped kitchen which is great. The dorm had AC at night and curtains. The staff are very welcoming and helpful - thank you Ronald, Aron and Marimar!

Verified reviewThe place has a nice vibe with smiley guests and staff. The facilities are very good and the kitchen is spacious and with lots of utensils. Many bathrooms inside and outside the dorms make everyone's life easier.
I've started to notice a bit of a pattern in this part of the world where they treat Genius Level 3 holders unequally which is something Booking should address. If you're a frequent user of the platform, you get additional discounts which hostels are unhappy about and either try to upsell by upgrading you to a room or service you don't need or give you the worst of what's available with no choice. The absurdity of having to pay $3 extra in a 10-bed dorm for a bed by the window ''with a volcano view'' is a first for me. Little made up policies which achieve nothing but to make travellers unhappy and earn a bad review. If you're a frequent flyer, they don't seat you on the wing, do they?

Verified reviewThe hostel is new, spacious and clean. Kitchen is well furnished.
Only one bathroom upstairs where the dorms are, the others are all downstairs and outside, which is not the most convenient. Dorm was quite small.
Thank you so much for your feedback! 😊 We’re glad you enjoyed the clean and spacious atmosphere, as well as the well-equipped kitchen. Just to clarify, the dorm rooms are designed to provide enough space for both the beds and guests' personal belongings. There’s under-bed storage available, plus lockers for valuables. Regarding the bathrooms: there are actually two bathrooms on the upper floor, and four more shared bathrooms on the ground floor, all kept clean and accessible for everyone. We really appreciate your comments — they help us keep improving! 💛

Verified reviewI like the general atmosphere of the place, and I feel like the common spaces are nicely done to create interaction. There is also a working area you can use if you are teleworking for instance. The air conditioning is put on at night which makes it super nice to sleep. Each bed has its own privacy with curtains, a plug to charge your phone and a light. There is a shared bathroom per dorm. I paid extra for breakfast that was prepared by one of the staff. She was adorable, asked me what I would prefer and made me a different thing each morning. If you are staying more than one night, you can use the laundry service as well for some extra dollars. When I arrived, the person that did my check in also told me about all the different activities to do in and around La Fortuna, including three nice free spots like El Salto (rope swing into the river) or the hot springs. The hostel is located 5-10min walk to the city park, has plenty of small shops, markets and restaurants around and has a few parking spots if you are with a car.

Verified reviewThe staff was incredible ! The location very convenient as well! The tours they offered great!
The AC is set up automatically to start at 9 and shut down at 6, without being able to control it… not ideal!
hello 👋🏽 thanks for choosing us. and all the nice commentaries. the AC only front desk is available to modify the temperature because of our eco politics we AC is turning on the amount of hours to have a great sleep time in 24 degree that is the recommendable temperature for saving energy. if we allow the guest to modify all the time maybe someone will put it in 18 and another one in 26 and no one would be comfortable and having a good rest.

Verified reviewMy stay at Ceiba was absolutely incredible, it was by far the cleanest hostel I ever stayed at. I loved waking up to the volcano view every day and I honestly have nothing bad to say about the place, the people you meet as well as the staff are super nice and helpful. The kitchen was very big and had everything we needed, and the beds were a lot more comfortable than anticipated. Overall a great experience and I’m super excited to see what the place will look like once they add all the different amenities they have planned!
