How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI loved staying in this guesthouse! The tropical grounds are beautiful, landscaped by the owners over two decades. Mike and Paul were terrific hosts with lots of advice about things to do in the area. Great pool and hot tub (although appropriately not very hot considering the hot weather). The room was clean and comfortable. For what I got, the property was great value for money. Would recommend to anyone who's comfortable staying in an adults-only, clothing-optional boutique guesthouse.

Verified reviewThe pool is lovely, tranquil, and plenty of shade. We had a room with a balcony, great view, saw scarlet macaws flying over. Breakfast by the pool was delicious.

Verified reviewI greatly appreciated the immediate servitude and graciousness Mike showed when my plans to travel back to SJO had failed unexpectedly amidst the also unexpected rain. He was able to create accommodations with the local airport to get me where I needed to go from one minute to the next thereby easing my day when I thought it had just took a turn for the worse! Definitely provided the PURA VIDA way...
I didn't like that there was no actual jacuzzi or spa with hot water because as it stated on the Get To Know Us page :"Instead you can soak with a cool drink in the Jacuzzi, take a refreshing dip in our pool, or just relax with a good book on your terrace or balcony, or meet and chat with other guests in our outdoor lounge area." I truly WAS looking forward to that warm soak after river rafting that day specifically for my birthday.
Thanks for taking time to share your experience... Glad that we were able to assist you with finding a domestic flight on short notice and drive you to the Quepos airport so you could make your flight home from San Jose, and arrange for pickup of your rental vehicle from Coyaba. I don't know where you found information about us having a Jacuzzi as it is clearly listed in our property amenities on this website that we have a Spa Jet Pool... since our average night time temperatures are 26C many guests appreciate the refreshing coolness of the water that is recirculated from the main pool.

Verified reviewIt was beautifully decorated, with amazing lush plants, beautiful fixtures and furniture. It feels like a little jungle oasis.
The only thing keeping it from a perfect rating is the jacuzzi was cold. And by that I mean the same temp as the pool, which wasn’t cold but not what you expect from a jacuzzi.

Verified reviewThis is a small, boutique inn/guest house. The facilities, while a bit kitsch, are pristine and lovely. The main area, or courtyard, is lush with numerous potted plants and landscaping. The breakfast each day (opt for the breakfast!) was both plentiful and yummy. We really enjoyed the fresh fruit plate each day. We had an issue with our shower head and it was addressed immediately with a new shower head. Rooms are comfortable and are each individually decorated. Information on getting around (the bus stops right outside their entrance) and restaurant recommendations were much appreciated, as well as tips on accessing the National Park and adjacent beach areas.
While close to the (only) road, it is not unique in this reality...everything is either on the road or only slightly set back. More space to hang clothing, or even shelving to place clothing (we were on a two-week trip) would have been nice. To be clear, there are shelves, but they are scant.

Verified reviewMike and Paul are wonderful owners, very attentive, informative and made our stay a memorable one. The property is beautiful, they have created a tropical paradise for those who stay. They offer breakfast every morning and Paul did not disappoint, it was something different everyday and it was delicious. The pool was a relaxing and refreshing experience at the end of a busy day!
We enjoyed everything about the property and hated to end our trip.

Verified reviewLovely respite from Quepos with a beautiful garden and pool area. The place is spotless and the breakfasts were very good. The hosts clearly take pride in this small boutique hotel.
The room was pretty small. A blanket or bedspread on the bed would be nice as the AC can get colder at night.

The room had tiny open closet with no room to hang clothes. The bathroom room was set uncomfortably away from the edge of the counter.

Attitude of the owners and staff was poor apart from a young local employee on our arrival who was very helpful
Thank you for taking time to share your comments. Unfortunately we could not be on site the day you arrived due to attending a medical emergency earlier that day, and made our apologies after introducing ourselves to you when we returned... that's when you shared your appreciation for our worker taking care of you, as well as your negative experience being unhappy at your previous Hotel. Other than briefly speaking with you about the breakfast option on the first morning of your stay, we didn't see you again, however we were pleased to assist with carrying your bags from your room as you requested and also call a taxi to your next Hotel. So quite frankly we're very surprised that you felt unwelcome at Coyaba since we consistently work to make ourselves available as required without being intrusive to our guests expectations. We sincerely hope you feel welcome at your next location.

Pauls breakfasts were fantastic every single morning and Mike was very welcoming and helpful with good local recommendations. It’s a good central location to explore Manuel Antonio and has everything you need. A home from home! Peanut, Asia and Ginger also made the stay even more welcoming 😊

There is a nice restaurant at walking distance (El Arado) should you not want to venture out for dinner to Manuel Antonio or Quepos!

Verified reviewThe pool was nice. It was located close to public transit and taxi/bus drivers knew the location. The room was clean and comfortable. Check in was easy. Michael connected us with a great guide named Roy for the national park guided tour.
The bedsheets were scratchy. The toilet paper was super thin (like in most of the country). The price for breakfast was very high considering other options in the area. If you want to be close to the beach, consider somewhere further down the road. But the bus ride was 20 minutes, which we didn't consider a big deal. It would have been a nice touch to have local coffee for brewing in the rooms rather than a Nescafe machine.
Thank you for your comments, you didn't mention anything to us about an issue with the bedding during your stay therefore we don't understand "scratchy sheets". Regarding the thin sanitary paper, you may have noticed many other places in Costa Rica also use bio degradable sanitary paper which is sceptic friendly. We serve complimentary unlimited, locally grown Costa Rica coffee for everyone in the morning, and provide Starbucks coffee pods for use in the Nescafe Dolce Gusta coffee makers inside most our rooms. Compared to many local restaurants that charge separately for each menu item, our fixed price for a home made breakfast includes unlimited coffee/tea, as well as fruit juice, fresh fruit plate, homemade bread with butter and tropical jam, and a different hot breakfast that is freshly prepared daily, for just 8,000 Colones.
