How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Verified reviewWe had a fantastic time here. The place is peaceful and so beautiful! We were in the chalet “experiencia” where it feels like you’re sleeping in the forest but you’re protected inside (lot of monkeys in the forest 😍)! Best breakfast we had in a long time! Everything is homemade, organic, healthy and also it varies each morning. Betty and Jessica are the best, it was a 5star service, they are extremely helpful and nice. They offer multiple services: laundry, massages, guide, a cook that comes over prepare your dinner, etc. We asked to have dinner there, a very kind lady came over and cooked a fantastic dinner. It is very well located not even 5min from Cahuita. Thank you Betty and Jessica, for sure we will come back.

Verified reviewIt is a paradise in the middle of pristine forest. It is an experience like no other. It is easy to go to town and return with Uber. What a special place! So so beautiful. And the cats are just adorable.
A few more salty options for breakfast would be nice:) and maybe a WhatsApp contact to communicate after 6 pm (just in case of an emergency). But these are minor things in what was one of the best memories of my time in Costa Rica.

Serious Safety Issues and Disappointing Stay There are major safety concerns that need immediate attention. The boardwalk to the rooms is severely rotten—we were a group of four and broke multiple boards just walking to and from our rooms. Several of us ended up with bruises and cuts on our shins. This level of neglect is unacceptable, and we seriously considered leaving for another hotel nearby. The pool is advertised as a natural swimming area, but in reality, it functions more as a wildlife pond. At night, we saw more than five snakes and dozens—if not hundreds—of frogs. It’s not a place I’d recommend swimming in. Breakfast was underwhelming and insufficient, with no options or variety. The rooms themselves were okay, more of a glamping setup than a hotel room. However, our coffee pot didn’t work, and even after requesting a replacement, the new one was also broken.

Verified reviewThe location in the middle of the rainforest was cool, allowing you to hear and see many animals. (We do recommend having your own vehicle that is able to drive on rural gravel roads.) The staff were really helpful, especially Gustavo. He provided helpful recommendations and responded to questions/concerns quickly. Gustavo set up a night tour for our group on the property, and the guide and tour were excellent. The daily breakfast was modest, but tasty, and the rooms were tidied daily. The rooms appeared as pictured.
Although this stay had the potential to be great, our group had significant safety concerns with the facility. There are wooden boardwalks and stairs that move throughout the property, and every single member of our group experienced the wooden boards breaking (even with 2 of our group falling through the boardwalk and injuring our legs). This is due to the moisture of the area impacting the wood. We think this should be improved with replacement of the faulty wood and additional structural support to prevent people being able to fall through before we can recommend others staying at this property.

The bed linen was a bit dirty (stained). The journey to the accommodation is a bit challenging (which makes sense since it is located in the middle of the jungle).

The shower was a bit hit and miss, just took a while to warm up.

Verified reviewThere are many things to love about La Shamana Ecolodge: The natural surroundings are beautiful and quiet with the execption of the birds and howler monkeys. The buildings are also beautiful both in their construction and decor... I loved the colors and fabrics used in the room we had! Breakfest was delicious and varied each morning. The night walk was exceptional with a very knowledgeable (especially about frogs and snakes that won me over to reptiles) and all the staff were attentive and helpful. Overall, this is a place to relax and be in nature. There is a small pond with a few long chairs, but not for swimming. It is accessible most easily with a 4x4 vehicle... close to Cahuita.

Verified reviewThis is a correction of an earlier review, which for some reason picked up my unfavourable review of another establishment PLEASE ignore the previous one, which hopefully will have dropped off. I stayed three nights. The Ecolodge is about 2 miles outside Cahuita, the last half mile unpaved. You can get there with 2WD but may be more comfortable with 4WD, if only for clearance. The Ecolodge consists of a central reception/breakfast/dining room, with numerous nearby cabins. Although conveniently close to Cahuita, it is elevated and truly in the depths of the rain-forest, supplemented by careful planting to generate a delightful, colourful surround. The view from my balcony was idyllic, and the sound of the howler monkeys when they passed unforgettable; as was lying in bed listening to a tropical thunderstorm. The spring-fed natural swimming pool is a delight, especialy after a sweaty day exploring Cahuita. It is a lodge, not a hotel, so there is no restaurant. Breakfast is delicious, and cooked hot on an individual basis; and dinner is available if you warn them in the morning or the night before. Staff attend as required, but the owner/manager lives on site and is always available (via WhatApp if she is in town). They were very helpful, arranging massages and an excellent English-speaking and knowledgable guide. The room itself was clean and spacious, with a good shower.

There was no water at night to shower or anything. Very BAD breakfast. In the morning water wasn't enough to shower.
hi Esteban, thank you for choosing for your stay, we take serious the experience of our guess and also the comments are a way to improve. we offer something different for our breakfast every day and is mostly continental as the majority of our customers prefer, we are an small hotel and buffet do not make sense for our budgets and quantity of personal. for being in the middle of the mountain sometimes we experience electric cuts cause by the public company but it not last to long and is fix by them. we are sustainable about the water and the showers depend of a mountain sistem and own river, we expressly maintain showers with a medium supplies of water to save the precios resours so needed for the whole ecosystem.

The building or I should say…..the “cabin “ have no solid walls , if any WILDLIFE attack …..no safe shuttles! the walls are enclosed by net like “green house”. The entry is too narrow!
Hi Cindy. thank you for choosing la Shamana as accomodation in the Caribbean CR. the hotel is situated in the middle of the forest and we count with our own private road, very safe. you have choose one one our houses, the experience room, is a house for nature lovers as it is all the hotel, we are offering the jungle experience in confort . It is a concept from were you can see all the forest around you without wall restrictions, however there is on place division of the rooms an a net who keep insects away. there is not danger staying in the cabins, we have 10 years of experience in the hotel and the neibours of this area know certainly the same, we are completely safe from animals do not enter the house to look for humans.
