How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewA little gem outside of town with an amazing host. Hummingbirds in the trees and howler monkeys nearby kept us entertained throughout our stay. Great breakfast and lovely, clean pool. Matheo went out of his way to help us and make us feel welcome.

Verified reviewThe common kitchen was a nice touch. I felt safe, and the owners were attentive and kind. "Only you", the dog is great. Two pillows on the bed would be nice and a real mattress on the single bed would be a quiet and comfortable change. Not only kids sleep on the single beds...Moms with tall sons have to as well. Nice grounds and lots of things for families to do...games etc. We didn't have breakfast as the cook was off for the holidays...fruit and coffee would have been appreciated for these weary travelers.
Lighting over the single bed and a second pillows would have been great.

Verified reviewI was traveling with a group of 17 high school students, which could’ve been more difficult, but Matheo and Erina were so helpful- making us very comfortable at the hotel and helping us arrange transportation and activities at a reasonable price. I will be back!

Verified reviewThe gorgeous garden setting, the awesome Costa Rican breakfast with a European twist. The owners go out of their way to make sure you're comfortable and knowledgeable about the area. The location is perfect, just a couple of miles from the jungle and beaches and a short drive to the laid-back but vibrant beach town of Puerto Veijo.
Nothing, except for the little traffic noise.

Verified reviewThe place is very nice, cozy and the owners are really friendly. Rooms, even though they are small, are more than enough. Location is perfect if you want to visit nearby national park.
Since the place is close to the main road it gets really noisy, which affect all the Caribbean, relaxed, close-to-nature vibe. Common kitchen could be also cleaner.

We are present and attentive to our customers and always listening to their needs. Thank you so much for your message. Pura vida!!!

Verified reviewLocation is awsome, you wake up at 5AM for the howler monkeys shoutings. The owner family is very kind as well. Pool is cleaned regularly. We spent there 3 nights, didnt regret at all.
The size of the room can be a bit small for a family, but you dont travel to Costa Rica for 5* Hotels
Thank you very much for your message. All our rooms are 16m². ☺

Verified reviewVery thoughtful place, the owner is very friendly and takes pride in her property. Breakfast was delicious!
Like with many off the road properties, the sounds of vehicles passing by can be noisy. Didn't bother us as we have stayed at a number of hotels just off the road and were used to it.
Thank you for your lovely message. Indeed we are located on road 36, 3km from the center of Cahuita and 300m from the entrance to the Cahuita National Park on the Puerto Vargas side. During the night, traffic is much less, so sleep can take place. Pura vida!!!!!

Verified reviewWe had a great stay at El Colibri Rojo and ended up extending our stay to 12 days. The rooms were comfortable with AC, we enjoyed spending time at the pool and breakfast was tasty. The location was perfect for us, since we rented a car and could park at the property. We also enjoyed being just a little out of the hustle and bustle of the centre, which was only 6 minutes by car. Playa Blanca is a 6 min drive as well. The place has a very calm nature and the garden is just stunning. The hosts were very friendly and hospitable and advised us on some tours that we wanted to do, which you can book through them. Cahuita is calmer than Puerto Viejo, which is just what we needed. It’s only a 15 min drive there. And you are just a small walk away from Cahuita National Park, which we can highly recommend visiting. All in all the best place we stayed at in Costa Rica!

Verified reviewI thought the accommodations were great, clean etc. Staff were great and helpful. They offered morning commute to town.
Transport back to stay after 6pm did not exist. No taxi available. Had to walk back at night the two miles on a highway. They own two dogs that the first night seemed to bark alot that made sleeping difficult. Second night not as bad.

Verified reviewThe hotel was fantastic. Check in was a breeze and the rooms and property we clean. It had a nice pool area to relax. Erina and Matheo were fantastic and really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Especially when I couldn't find my AC remote. 😳
Not a dislike, but was further from Cahuita than I realized.
