How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewVery cozy and informal environment, you will feel like home and make good friends instantly. The location makes you feel like in the middle of the jungle while still being 10 minutes away from the beach! Plus you can rent bikes.
Nothing negative about my stay

Verified reviewGreat hostel, a bit remote and in the nature. They rent bike for 8$/day. Located in Cloques, more peaceful than Puerto Viejo.
From Puerto Viejo, when arriving/leaving, you need to come with Uber or taxi or wait a bus for a very long time. Not super convenient.

Verified reviewVery friendly staff! It's located near Playa Cocles, 10 min walking, and it's easy to explore other beaches in the surrounding area if you rent a bike (which can be provided/facilitated by the staff)
Very expensive for what is offered. We paid 45 dollars per night in a private room with a shared bathroom. There was no water between 2 PM and 7 AM, apparently due to an external problem in water supply, but we were only informed by that after completing the check-in. The kitchen is available for usage in a very limited time, you cannot use it after 9 PM. When there is water, you cannot expect to have a hot shower. There is no ammenities provided (e.g. soap), the laundry was not available during our stay. Do not recommend.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for highlighting the friendliness of our team and our great location — we’re happy you enjoyed those aspects! Regarding the water issue, you're absolutely right — there was a temporary disruption in the public water supply in the area during your stay. We understand how inconvenient this can be, and we did our best to support guests and communicate as soon as we were informed ourselves. The kitchen is available for guest use until 10 PM, as part of our efforts to maintain a peaceful atmosphere for everyone. We’re sorry if this felt limiting. Hot water is available in one of the shared showers, though not all are equipped, and while we don’t offer hotel-style amenities, we aim to provide a clean, friendly, and nature-connected stay at a fair price for the area. We appreciate your detailed feedback and will continue working to improve the experience for all our guests.

Verified reviewLovely environment. Staff went out of their way to be helpful. Highly recommend to got out of the noise of the town
Just a little too far of a walk to get back to main town, and a bit expensive to catch rides, so I would suggest renting a bike from in town before to have for your stay there

WiFi gets a bit slow. A hot shower goes a long way.

Verified reviewInto the nature, nice decorated, good place to chill, one of the best private rooms with toilet we had in Costa Rica
Outdoor couches smelled a little bad because of the humidity/rain.

Verified reviewI highly recommend visiting this place—Pablo, the owner, makes you feel right at home. The rooms are comfortable, the kitchen is well-equipped, and they offer free coffee. The facilities are being renovated, and the cleanliness is noticeable throughout. Plus, the natural surroundings draw you in, with two friendly pets and plenty of open spaces to enjoy a getaway from the city and breathe fresh air. It's my favorite spot in Puerto Viejo. I arrived as a guest and left as a friend.

Verified reviewThe place is little bit old and need to be taken care. The bathroom is old I didn't even sit on the toilet desk and the rooms also need to be clean better . In the kitchen facilities are old too the fridges stinked. Volunteers and stuff are are trying to keep it clean but was not my style. To pass one night it's ok but for the price you can find nicer and new place with better location. To the town was a bit far if you don't have a car
Bathroom. Every think old and not so clean

Verified reviewSimply one the best Hostel I ever been to. The location is far from Puerto Viejo, of course, but the beach is close (ten minutes by walk), and just a bit further there are three supermarkets and a pharmacy (and you'll find yourself in the main road, pretty easy to do anything). Then, you're staying in a very nice jungle spot. The facilities are great, good kitchen, big rooms (with lockers and plugins). All very clean (you can see how the volunteers are making an effort, they're really great: all the staff is very friendly and helpful). Good common areas with a fantastic atmosphere, very social and easygoing (I would dare say you can actually feel at home: your home in the jungle). Highly recommended :)
No flaws, in my opinion

Verified reviewThe owner is super chill and kind. The place is surrounded by nature and is a perfect little get away spot. Kitchen is well equipped, toilets clean, showers too. The city centre (Puerto Viejo) is a couple of kilometres away, but still easily accessible, even on foot! You also have some wonderful playas to see around the hostel area! I would recommend 🌸
