How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWhen we arrived at Pura Vista hotel, we were so impressed by the view and surroundings. The view from our room is stunning. We enjoyed the pool the next day as private because only the two of us were there. The room is big and super clean. The bed is very comfortable. Every detail in the hotel has been carefully designed. The breakfast was delicious. They include a main dish that you can order and a variety of fresh fruits. Fresh brewed coffee and juice served. The owner Mark is very friendly and such a nice person to answer all the questions about trips around Costa Rica for the first time visit like us. We forgot the iPad in the hotel on the first day, and on the last day when we were back to the Liberia international airport, Mark drove to the airport and returned it to us. Thanks Mark for your service and cozy hotel. We are so appreciate it!

Verified reviewVery quiet and peaceful. Relaxed host - Mark was always very helpful with suggestions and advice when needed. It felt like being at home - away! Great location just up from the beach, where there is a good restaurant to eat at. We ate there most nights. Little fridge in the room for drinks. Fantastic view and generally comfortable.
Air con was a bit noisy but didn’t really bother us.

Verified reviewThe view is everything! We loved to sit out in front of our room and look at the view. There was excellent bird watching as well. Mark was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were a little small but I would still recommend staying here.

Verified reviewThe view was nice
Our stay at this hotel was an absolute disaster, and I would strongly advise anyone considering it to look elsewhere. Every single part of our experience was riddled with issues, from arrival to departure. We had informed the hotel in advance that we would be arriving at 6:00 PM. When we got there, the place was completely deserted. No staff, no instructions, nothing. We had to make an expensive 10-minute international call to the US just to get someone to open the gate. This was an incredibly frustrating and unprofessional start. Once inside, things didn’t get any better. We had booked a room away from the pool with a king bed. Instead, we were given a room directly in front of the pool with two queen beds. This was not what we had requested, but with no staff around, we had no way of addressing the issue. To make matters worse, our room was infested with ants. After heading out for dinner, we returned to find that the gate code we had been given did not work. With no staff around to assist us and no response from the hotel, we were left with no choice but to climb the wall to get inside. The hotel finally responded to our message—three hours later—long after we had already let ourselves in. As for the staff, we can’t say anything about them—because we never met a single person before we left. The complete lack of presence or assistance was shocking. Overall, this was one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever had. Poor communication, zero customer service, an ant-infested room, and a complete disregard for guest concerns. Stay far, far away from this place.
Im so sorry you had this experience and due to the fact you made a last minute booking and did not pay for your room we apologized that we were in town doing the shopping for the next day of service. You were not available upon arrival nor did you read yourmessage or use WhatsApp to contact me. Signs clearly have phone numbers for contact and we’ve had NO problems all season. Again I’m sorry for the inconvenience as I did operate everything remotely and unfortunately you were not prepared. We are a small family owned boutique property nestled in the community of Ocotal, not the Four season with staff 24/7. Your bill has yet to be cover therefore you chose to take advantage of our good faith and did not say anything at breakfast which we could have rectified the issue… again I hope your adventure in Costa Rica is filled with blessings and please do not abuse us for that. Your booking was confirmed and could have been cancelled due to being within 24 hours of arrival which is not customary. Be happy we had a place for you to rest. No complaints from us.

Verified reviewWe had an amazing 3 nights at Pura Vista. The owner Mark has curated a beautiful and peaceful space. The view is gorgeous (even better in person), the location is fantastic, comfortable and hugeee bed, great water pressure in the shower, and the room has everything you need. Daily breakfast was a plus too, a simple yet delicious typical Tico breakfast, made with love and care. Mark was really friendly and helpful and even kindly allowed us a late check out. A huge bonus was the hotel cats lounging around! Very friendly and sweet. We loved our stay and will definitely return if we’re ever in CR again.
The toilet didn’t really love flushing super well, we’d often have to give it a few minutes and then come back and flush again. Not the end of the world and did not detract from our trip at all. Pura vida.

Verified reviewThe view from the property of Playa Ocotal was amazing! The beach was a 15 minute walk with some decent snorkeling on the left side of the beach by the rocks. The infinity pool was very refreshing with incredible views of the ocean. The beds were comfortable and the shower was very nice. We enjoyed our breakfasts every morning prepared by Lili and eating at Father Rooster’s on the beach (1 of 2 restaurants within walking distance of the hotel).
There was minimal service provided by the owners during our stay. The hotel was run more like an air bnb than a boutique hotel (service was provided only on request). The refrigerator in the dining room was not plugged in and a small ice machine was provided a few days at the end of our stay. The showers did not drain (the water level was at the point of almost overflowing onto the bathroom floor). If you want a variety of restaurants to eat at you need to have a car or hire an Uber/taxi. We were not provided a detailed invoice when requested and all communication regarding checkout and payment was through WhatsApp.
Our location is not in a mainstream area - you definitely are a bit off grid while feeling the touch of luxury with mesmerizing views yet only 1.5 miles from the amenities of Playa del Coco. We so love you enjoyed the property!! Walk to the beach, breakfasts at Pura Vista and of course the pool views. :) Apologies - the main dining refrigerator wasn't in operation during your stay - we try to repair before replacing in Costa Rica but luckily each room has a mini fridge for guests personal use. The communal ice machine is a new item we just added and are looking for a larger machine in the meantime. While we are such a small property in an exclusive location the use of WhatsApp for quick communication service allows us to be available even on the go since we're not a large property with a huge staff. But we do try to be very quick in replying. :) And yes slow flow drains in the showers to minimize over use or waste of water in our limited location on the coast of Costa Rica might be unique to new visitors to this country. Of course when people reach out we always suggest if it's absolutely necessary we advise just temporarily removing the floor cap and water flows like a river but visiting Costa Rica is also a bit about understanding how fragile and limited our most sacred resources are. For instance when you visit Pura Vista you see the treasure of this magical space and why we sacrifice a little to embrace the priceless.

Verified reviewThe bed & breakfast is in an elevated position overlooking Playa Ocotal and enjoys spectacular views from the terrace. Great pool with loungers and comfortable bedrooms - quality bedding with each having a private outdoor area and patio furniture. Owners are warm & welcoming and very responsive to emails/WhatsApp messages. There is secure parking on site. Ocotal beach is approximately 15 mins away on foot and has a great restaurant, otherwise for the majority of restaurants it means a drive into Coco.Beach.
We booked this some time ago when the property was positioned as a boutique hotel and under a different ownership as we discovered when we got there; the new owners have been there for just 5 months and encourage the guests to be as autonomous as possible; the only time they are really around is at breakfast. Rooms are serviced but you have to ask. Not sure if it's just a case of not having updated the info relating to the property but it wasn't quite what we'd been led to believe when we booked:. there isn't a restaurant/bar/coffee house on site as given which was very disappointing as this was supposed to be a few days of relaxation after a busy holiday and we ended up doing a lot of driving.

Verified reviewPura Vista is situated high up above Playa Ocotal so the views are amazing. We loved the pool and patio area. With a north facing vista you could get some nice late afternoon shade. We had tasty breakfasts daily (thank you Lili Alvarez) in the upper dining area. We used that same area each evening to unwind, listen to music, play cards, and hang with our travel companions. Our room (room 3 lower level) was clean and comfortable and the bed was very comfortable. Thisbe and Mark were friendly and informative about the area.
While the location was peaceful and beautiful it may not be for everyone. It’s a short drive to get into Playa Ocotal where there are restaurants and shops. There are only two restaurants within walking distance to Pura Vista Hotel (Father Roosters and Soluna Beach Bistro). Both were very good but it’s always nice to have a variety to choose from. Room wise, our AC unit was pretty loud but necessary if you want a room temp under 26C. Our shower was nice but didn’t drain well. We found the checkout was a little unconventional. We were never charged before arrival as per our reservation confirmations so we settled up all costs upon departure. It was difficult to get a straight answer on the final billing and no invoice was ever provided. In the end we confirmed our final billing through WhatsApp correspondence. Really no problem, just a relaxed approach. Pura Vida.
Soo sooo happy you enjoyed the views, pool, patio and overall property at Pura Vista Hotel! We love Lili too!!! We definitely work to keep amazing people supporting the property while it's so small you can imagine the delicate balance. As well as the need to use WhatsApp so we can quickly communicate with guests since we don't have a huge staff and the exclusive location keeps us on the go. I'm glad you felt it was very relaxed.... :) We definitely try to keep it as relaxing for guests as possible. :). Thank you for understanding the AC units are important to chill ourselves in the tropics where we don't have central ac units and the shower drains being eco slow flow drains to minimize over water use..... Costa Rica likes to conserve their resources and we try our best even though not all guests have experienced it before. We've added information about the drains in the rooms on our blog and greatly appreciate all of your feedback!!! We hope you'll visit Pura Vista Hotel again one day!!!

Verified reviewThe ocean views are gorgeous! The rooms are comfortable, and the outdoor sitting area by the pool was great. Communication with the owners was prompt and helpful. Lili was a wonderful breakfast chef and all-around host. Great view of the night sky.
No regular hours for on-site staff - would have been especially helpful when we arrived as we had some difficulty locating our room. If you don't have a car (we didn't), be aware that the location is quite far from town, and transportation options are limited. There is really only one restaurant within walking distance (Father Rooster), which has good food and cocktails, but the walking conditions aren't the best (narrow road, steep hills), especially after dark. Even so, we would stay there again now that we know what to expect!
We're so happy you found your rooms comfortable which is high on our priority. As the views will will never disappoint. We're so sorry to hear you had trouble finding your room upon arrival. We have tried tweaking instructions for check in on our website and in pre check in email. Yes Costa Rica is no a conventional trip to a super developed city, so yes rough roads, less street lights but that's part of the appeal to Costa Rica too. Yes we recommend a car if you plan to do tours or multi days and we've added that to our new blog on the website. Much appreciate your feedback and hope you do come back to visit us at Pura Vista!!! Cheers!!!

Had bugs in the room. Too difficult to get to. Terrible roads full of potholes. Our truck didn't fit in the parking lot. Check in process was designed for owner ease but not customer ease. Would never stay there again. Way, way, way too expensive for what you got. Included breakfast but I was ill from the eggs for 2 days.
