How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

They are very helpful with all the local recommendations and are always there for the guests:) Simple, clean, cosy, great location and wonderful food!! It gets loud in the evenings, but earplugs are provided for those who want an early night - and they work so well! We enjoyed our stay very much!! Thanks to Augustin and all the stuff!!!

Verified reviewThe location was very central and close to the beach. The room was peaceful and cutely decorated, as was the rest of the lodge. They provided towels for the pool, bathing, and for visiting the beach. The included breakfast was amazing. The staff were all friendly and extremely helpful. They treated us like family from the beginning with advice and ideas on activities to do and places to enjoy.
The sounds of night life can be loud, but the lodge provides earplugs which help a lot.

Rooms are very basic, could use a few things like washcloths, tissues. TV did not work

Verified reviewThe beds were comfy, rooms were spacey and the reception/ restaurant was really modern and cool. The breakfast was amazing.
The bathroom was slightly lackluster and the showers water pressure was poor.

You can hear the nearby bar music but that is unavoidable anywhere in tamarindo since there is a night life

Verified reviewThus was a quick 2 day stop, found Refugio by accident with no regrets, Augustin the host went we'll beyond his duties. He set up a last minute tour to the estuary where we saw crocs and monkeys, The room was nice outside the pool. Location 3 min walk to the beach and a well worthwhile breakfast. Verified reviewThe place is clean, comfortable, and has a nice pool to cool off in. Breakfast was great, especially the omelette :) They have great coffees during the day. We also loved the burgers. Big thanks to Augustín, who helped us with check-in and gave us useful tips throughout our stay.
It can get a bit noisy on weekend nights because of parties in town, but with earplugs it was fine. Not a fault of the property but the whole town :)

Like mention in reviews it can be quite loud on the weekends as it’s near bars and clubs. If you are sensitive to sound be mindful of this.

Verified reviewIt was an amazing time in Costa Rica—huge thanks to Agustín! The place is simple yet charming, with incredible breakfasts and the kindest, most helpful people. Located in the heart of Tamarindo, it’s just steps from restaurants and within walking distance of the beach. Plus, there’s a grocery store right across the street. We knew it would be lively at night, but it wasn’t an issue. Agustín provided us with earplugs, which helped a lot—we slept well despite the music outside. The atmosphere and energy here are absolutely unbeatable. For beach lovers: head to the left side for a quieter, soft sandy beach. If you’re looking for more action, the right side offers surfing, beach clubs and the massage for $35-$40/hour ;) Thank a lot, Agustín for such welcoming hospitality!;)l

The care and focus on prioritizing the guest experience is rare in and of itself - amazing experience - and omg the homemade yogurt and breakfast - included in our stay was exceptional!

What really made our stay special, though, was the staff—everyone was so warm and welcoming. Huge shoutout to Agustin for the awesome tour recommendations. amazing breakfast options. It’s not that I didn’t like it—just a couple of small recommendations. The TV had constant issues, with problems displaying the image. Also, the curtains in our room were too small for the window, so they didn’t provide full privacy. Nothing major, just little details!

Verified reviewRefugio Surf Lodge is a lovely property, wonderful staff! It’s right in the middle of Tamarindo nightlife, so the only downside to that is if you want quiet at night, use the earplugs they provide!!
