How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Verified reviewThe pool was a great place to cool off! Location was right around the corner from one of the main throughfares, one leads you to all the food trucks/beach access! 8 beds max, everyone had a small locker (carry-on size), A/C, bed sheets, and a power outlet w/ light within each bed. Showers were lukewarm but convenient and just what you need. You can rent boards there as well as book your next destination thru the very helpful staff. Of course, meeting the best people in the world and enjoying the free coffee in the mornings, always a blessing!
A bit of a walk to the main strip. Which is nice and then not. Wifi was limited, so I had to use a VPN to access some US sites. A/C controlled by staff. Not this hostel but Tamarindo the town! It is a place of too much tourism with false expectations; sticker shock is real!

Verified reviewI loved everything! One of my favorite hostels by far. The pool is great, the vibe is friendly and chill, beds comfy, big bathrooms, perfect location. I’d definitely come back again! This isn’t a party hostel, which was why I chose it - but people are quite friendly and social. Quiet hours are respected.

Verified reviewI loved the art, the room/bunk bed set up, they had a kitchen everyone could use, the bathroom set up was great with multiple toilets and showers in each closed door stall, they offered a towel, (a lot of hostels do not offer towels), it was small and homey. The layout with separate hangout areas was good.
I didn’t like the male volunteer/employee who helped at the front desk and around the hostel. He’s rude, judgmental, w/ no patience. He’s not chill enough to be there in any capacity, in my opinion.

Verified reviewThis hostel was great. Big rooms, kitchen and bathroom. Everything was super clean. Quite social hostel as well. The room temperature with ac was great. I had a great stay. They even offered private surf lessons for 45$.
They did not provide oil or any spices to cook, which was quite disapointing. They only provided salt. Providing the cooking basics would be a great addition to the hostel.

Verified reviewI stayed in the King Studio and it was enormous. Really liked it. Great value for money. The staff were lovely. Easy to socialise with other travellers. It’s a chilled hostel so don’t expect beer pong, pool and bar crawls. Good location, 5 mins walk to centre of town and the beach. Very quiet at night.
Not much. Maybe a little too chilled for me as a solo traveller. No bar but my room had a fridge 😉

Yoga mats were very dirty. Pillows very high, and uncomfortable.
Thank you so much for visiting TamaHostel. The pillows are high quality pillows for hotels. Maybe you wanted a ortopedic kind of pillow, more specific and personal. The idea of providing yoga mats is that people be respectful and clean them after enjoying its use. We wash them often to prevent what you described, next time you could ask us to wash it for you before you use it or also you can use the free desinfectant and cloth to clean it by yourself and feel more comfortable. Leaving a bad review because you foud a dirty yoga mat, is kind of harmful to a little local bussiness. The more logical could be to be grateful for having access to yoga mats.

Verified reviewThis place was perfect for my partner and I. We are both young, adventurous travellers and when we stayed here, we felt like we stepped into another home. It was so nice to meet people from all over the world. We were in the tent and it was literally the best sleep we had in Costa Rica. We'll be back!

Verified reviewWe loved the hostel, the glamping was very cozy and plenty of space, with lights and fan. There’s a kitchen when we can storage food and prepare meals, common area with sofas and tables and a lovely pool which was quite warm even by the evening. All the Spaces were very clean.
To leave… Maybe an extra option of power plug would be nice.

Thanks for staying at TamaHostel, if you let us know from day one your concern about slepping on the upper bunk bed we could tried to find a fast solution for you, but instead you kept it to yourself and said nothing about it to us until here on the review. It´s been more than 6 years since the begining of TamaHostel, and never seen one single person falling of the bunk bed. but again, you make it clear since day one, we could propose a solution.

Verified reviewThis is the best hostel I went to during my 5 weeks in Costa Rica. Beds are comfortable, there is a huge bathroom where there is shower and toilet in each unit, great kitchen with lots of kitchenware and two electric stoves. In the dormitories there are enough space for all the backpacks and stuff. They have small lockers for valuables. Nice pool with sunbeds and hammocks. And beautiful plants in the garden. Staff and volunteers and super nice and helpful, they really care about the wellbeing of their guests. And also the hostel is very clean. Close to center and supermarket. I am more than happy I chose this one in Tamarindo.
I can't think of anything. Maybe they could put curtains on the beds because the light coming from the garden can be disturbing during the night.

Verified reviewHonestly my boyfriend and I had a blast at this hostel. The Personal are really helpfull and kind. Speacially the ones that we have the chance to meet. Like Mayda and the other tall guy that i cant remember his name. The place is really easy going. Kitchen always clean. Just a step aways from everything you need in tamarindo. Its really a chill vibe and I recommend 100%. The cleaning people are working hard to keep the place perfect and its work. Again we totally recommend.
