Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesNice to break up the drive between Puerto Viejo and our next location. The family room is on a separate property from the Chocolate Lodge. Next to a small agriculture property, has a stream flowing outside, and an empty pool. Large covered open area for parking and cooking.

GermanyOscar was super friendly!! Made our stay a perfect stop on the way to Tortuguero! The house we stayed in was built for private purpose and it is Costa Rican standard - still, ok as this way we had a kitchen to cook… What I really liked are the 2 person cabines they set up on the farm! Perfect little room, nice modern bathroom and great view! You can open up to sleep „in nature“ - lovely place!!!

SwedenFirst of all. The location and GPS-instructions were completely off. Lured us (2 not Costa Rica experienced drivers) out in an actual dangerous and obscure situation trying to find ‘the lodge’. We ended up, looking for the lodge in the evening, in a very (!) uncomfortable situation with stray dogs running around the car barking (we didn’t dare to go out), narrow and completely dark countryside roads we had to reverse/turn around on, into the ditches. Just by following the GPS for the Choclate Lodge to a destination that was not correct. Nothing on that location. We came about 19h and it was pitch black. We were led out on the countryside, completely in the nowhere. We managed to stop the only person we saw, to help us connect to a wifi and get hold of the owner. Pure coincidence we met this helpful person. No signs whatsoever for the lodge. Which really wasn’t a lodge by the way. It was a shelter in a barn more like it. Extremely uncharming. Also dirty bathroom with genital hairs over the schampo bottles, the toilet didn’t flush etc. (The beds were actually comfortable, maybe felt like that after all exhaustion we experienced this evening.) The pool was really (!) unclean, green, and the door to the room itself did not open, not even for the person who showed us, she had to call in someone else. It opened after a while with a lot of force. Same exact incident when we tried to get out in the morning. I think it was the worst stay I ever had all over the world, and I travelled a lot for now 35 years. I remember some bed-bugs in Brazil about 20 years ago, but at least it was a better over-all experience. It wasn’t the greeting from the host that was so bad, they were nice. It was the whole experience. Definitely not worth the money. Big mistake. I told Oscar already the same evening this was an awful experience for us. He said you are free to go. At 8 in the evening, with no internet, completely exhausted, we simply couldn’t. We had to stay.
Oscar and his parents were nice to talk to. That’s it.

EstoniaNothing to fault here
We arrived way late and we were greeted by the owner on a dark street. And there is when the awesomeness began. The place was a small studio on a dark cocoa plantation. We opened all the doors to (screens to keep out the bugs of course) and heard a lot of birds and animals. Sitting there in middle of "jungle" and only sounds were animals and birds was just magical. Slept like a babies. Next day we walked in the plantation and it was cocoa harvest day so we ate some fresh cocoa and owner told us about cocoa production. Basically a private tour ;). Tasty homemade breakfast was delivered by owner. And no strict check out time - chill. Definate place to visit for a one of a kind experience when you are passing by. Thank you.

United StatesNothing - Everything was perfect.
Absolutely Everything: We made the reservation at the last minute - I mean we arrived at the property within 20-minutes of booking, and our Hosts didn’t even see our reservation yet. However, they were quick to respond and extremely professional. The location was remote, private and completely tranquil with the cabin nestled in the chocolate grove. Breakfast was also very good and served early because we had to depart at 6:30 am - The Owners made adjustments to ensure we had breakfast before departing.

United StatesOscar is a wonderful host, who let us try many different fruits growing on the farm (we made chocolate bars too). This was a great place to start our Costa Rica vacation. The farm has a wonderful location next to a forest. In the morning we saw Toucans, Parrots and Great Green Macaws.

United StatesIncluding the word “lodge” in the name of the property is misleading. It is a residential property that is being used for short term rentals. There’s no reception, no common area (aka lodge), or any full time staff. I also felt misled as I was told I’d have access to a farm with a soccer field and a pool. That didn’t happen. To their credit, I received a slight discount (about $20 total) for lack of access to the farm/pool. As I checked out, I planned on paying with a credit card… I was told at the last minute that that was not possible.
The staff are very kind.

GermanyUnfortunately, when we stayed there we didn’t have the pleasant stay we expected. Oscar was not available for us at all. Promises which were made, were not fulfilled. Nobody could help us with the restaurant, that is mentioned on the booking confirmation. Neither was wifi available at all, so we couldnt even communicate with the host via mail. Next morning, we were asked to pay the whole stay in cash, although credit card details were already exchanged and a Mastercard payment was guaranteed.
Nice and clean Bungalows, Oskars Brother and his wife were very nice and tried to help

CanadaA cozy converted shipping container just outside of town in the middle of a cacao plantation. A chocolate lover's dream! Upon arrival, Oscar, the hospitable owner picks some cacao pods for us, opening the ripest one so we can try a cocoa bean. Delicious! We savour the flavour as he explains the chocolate making process. A gift of candied cacao beans is our next tasty treat. Oscar is a good cook as well and breakfast is served at his restaurant about a kilometer away. Be sure to try the tea made from cacao bean shells. Candied, flavoured cacao beans, chocolate and cacao teas are available for sale. This was one of our favourite places to stay in Costa Rica. Oscar made us feel so welcome and was so helpful, always available if needed. Such a great and interesting experience. We wish we could have stayed longer.
