How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewMe and my sister had a wonderful time at Casa das Ilhas. We did amazing hikes, thanks to the owner Katelijne, who indicated the routes on our phone and arranges the transfer to the starting point of the hike. That was really great! Each evening we enjoyed a tasty dinner after a long day of hiking. The rooms are basic but contain everything you need, including a beautiful view and a very comfortable bed. We would definitely come back!
Nothing!

Verified reviewWe really liked the hospitality and the care that Katelijne has for her guests. The host helped us organise the various trekkings that we did, and told us which were the best ones for our level. The food was very good, breakfast is very generous and you also have the possibility to have lunch at the table or as a picnic (usefull if you are planning a long walk). Dinners are all together and the food is high quality. If you want to feel at home this is the right place for you. The new added pool is just what you need after a tiring day, and the view will just blow your minds. To get to the hotel there is a bit of a walk, but there will be people helping you out with your luggage, and the beautiful view and great hospitality are absolutely worth it. The island is gorgeous and the stay at Casa Das Ilhas is a must!
thank you for you comment, we loved having you with us !! right people at the right placed

WIFi could be better. It was not usable in my room or on the terrace. Ok in the main building.

Verified reviewA perfect place for those who know why they've come to Santo Antão – and who value atmosphere and simplicity over touristy attractions. Ideal base for hitting the hiking trails – the location is great, and Katelijne is super helpful with organizing routes or transport...or anything you need. You can really disconnect from the outside world here. Bonus: amazing view from the window :)
Not for everyone – but for the right kind of traveler, it’s exactly what you’re looking for. You can/have to fully disconnect here: both thanks to the remote setting and the limited Wi-Fi (available only in the common area).
thanks for this honest comment, this wasn t 100% the spot to be for you guys but glad you made the most of it !!

Verified reviewEverything was so nice, from the landscape, the immersion in nature and above all the people at the property. We felt welcome even before we arrived and we were part of the family the moment we passed the door! Our host is extremely caring and ensures that each guest gets the suitable guidance for their activities on a daily basis. We loved the dinners with the other guests and the sharing of experiences. The food was deliciously prepared. Nothing was overlooked!

Verified reviewThe hotel is in the middle of nowhere, to get to the hotel you have to get up by foot about 15 min up the hill. Be aware that the workers are the ones to lift the luggage. The hotel has a peaceful and beautiful view of Paul's Valley, there is nothing around, not restaurants or supermarkets, only the sound of birds and dogs. Wheter you want to hike or visit the island by taxi, this hotel is super well connected. The best part of the hotel are the gatherings during breakfast and dinner, when everyone share their plans for the day or tell about their experience hiking.
Understanding that Santo Antão is an island with very few ressources, breakfast and dinner for people with food restriction is not balanced and even though they will tell that they will adapt the menu, they won't do it.
very nice comment, but yet, only a 7... one observation we do adapt menu, have gluten free food for breakfast, adapt for mon fisch , non meat or vegetarian people... or other allegies...

Verified reviewStunning location, in the mountain (you have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to the house); Kathelin's permanent availability to help and advise on whatever questions we had; Welcoming and efficient staff; Delicious, carefully prepared, breakfast and dinner; Overall, a great home-like feel atmosphere, with very nice guests from different countries.
Water pressure is rather low (but hot water is not a problem, works perfectly).
Obrigadaaaaaaa, thank you

Verified reviewAmazing place to stay - beautiful views in every direction. Rooms are simple, but comfortable and great value for the price. The included breakfast was a good start to the day and the dinners served communally for a reasonable charge were very filling and locally sourced. It was nice to meet other travelers - not as easy to do these days. The owner is a dynamo who can take care of everything while switching between French, English, German and Portuguese.
It was election season and the campaign ads blasting through the valley were mind-numbing. They did stop by 6pm and it's only for a few weeks every 4 years.
thank you sooo much for this nice comment.... and yes totally agree about the campaign music...

Verified reviewExcellent location, with a beautiful landscape, immersed in nature. Upon inquiring about transport from Porto Novo (where the ferry takes you) to the accommodation, the Casa das Ilhas staff kindly arranged an aluguer (minibus and main public transport in the island) that took us all the way to the accommodation. As there is no drivable road access from the road to the accommodation, the staff has also provided someone who helped us out with the luggage. The accommodation is located in the most beautiful place, overlooking the valley. The wifi worked fine. The breakfast and other optional meals were in group with the rest of the travellers. You can arrange the breakfast time though. Casa das Ilhas provided dinner (approximately 12€): you can ask vegan or vegetarian. I am vegan and my friend is vegetarian and the food was great and plenty. They do a different dish every time but you won't be choosing from a menu. It is what they give you and it is mostly done with locally produced products. Absolutely recommend. It includes drink, main and dessert. Although I think the dinners were a bit pricy for the local prices, it is absolutely worth it, especially as the accommodation is located in a remote place, it can be quite useful to have dinner in Casa das Ilhas as it can be quite of a walk to the next restaurant. There are snacks, drinks and coffee that you can take whenever you wish to, note it down and pay in the end. The staff was very useful providing information and maps of the different hikes that can be done in Santo Antao. The outdoors space is good for socialising, whilst enjoying the magnificent landscape. I really recommend Casa das Ilhas!
Thank you so much for your nice feedback... just for completing info : for dinner, we ask 11 € = 1200 esc... this includes main disch ( rice -as much as you want- 3 vegetables - fisch or meat ) and a dessert... if you have a close look at the restaurants, you will not find easily cheaper... meal + dessert, + free grogue or ponch on the house...

We have never been treated beter at a stay. The dinner is lovely and an excellent way to meet people. The staff is also very friendly.
We really had nothing to dislike. Beware however this stay is located on the mountain and takes a nice climb, really good to develop good calves and glutes.

Verified reviewWe enjoyed the location of this place, which is directly on of the most beautiful trails of the valley. The local staff was very open and helpful as well as probably the ones adding the flavour to the food. It was a very quiet environment, chickens wake you up - but not too early.
The guesthouse is European owned which is very clear in the daily life. Concerning the food, the quality was sad to experience. Especially, taking into account the quality of the local food availble and otherwhere we have experienced on this island. It was a sad experience to be served dinner that was mostly european and at the same time based on pasta, rice and canned vegetables. Unfortunately, it's not possible to go anywhere else for dinner as the steep trail to the house is not lit up after the sun is down. Wifi is only availble in the common area, in which only serving tables, tables at which you eat and taburettes are availble. When a fantastic picture of the pool is shown on the homepage, you should also expect to be at least able to use it. Itseemed to have been a long time since anybody could have been using this pool as it was quite dirty.
dear sir, sad to see that you were not happy but i have to correct you on some matters all our food is fresch, vegetables, fisch, etc, you refused breakfast, asked us nothing, but give bad comment we serve cachupa, feijoada, fresch fisch with vegetables, local porc meat etc... my "very local cook", Milvia, is very offended by your statements.... one of the dinners was "galinha + ervilha de terra com cenoura fresco, e batata assado no forno" ... And if the food was so bad... why dine twice ?? the trail is light up to go dine at the village, i even urge my guests go go and taste another table in the village ( ps, today I am going for dinner in Vila das pombas with my mother -85 by the way- and husband... if you check in Booking no mention is made of a pool because WE HAVE NO POOL, it is a small watertank, used mainly for irigating the garden... but lost of guests use it to refresch anyway... ( if you have a good look at the pictures you can clearly see how "big" it is... i would be ashamed to call it swimming pool...) ps... you left without saying goodby, leaving money on the counter... first time anybody does that in 18 years... and "forgot" to pay tourism tax... Best Regards, Kate and team...

Verified reviewAmazing views! The location: great start for the best hikes around the island. The owner Katelijne is a great source of information. The food was great and we liked that we all ate together at one big table so we got to know one another. There is a fridge with drinks and snacks at a very affordable price. WiFi was good too. The mattress and cushions are really comfortable.
The room we had was rather basic and a bit dark but it is not the place to be spending much time in your room. It’s too beautiful outside! We didn’t mind it at all. Water pressure was low but since we are on a mountain that is just the way it is.

WiFi connection in the room could be better, but do we really need that in such a place?
Hello, thank U for your feedback... to be honest there is no WIFI in the rooms but some rooms just catch a little bit... only one room is in between the provider and extender... and that room is excellent for DN if needed !
