How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewStaying at Casa Marisia was honestly the best choice I could have made for my days on Fogo Island. Everything was so well taken care of — from arranging my transport to organizing a guide for the volcano hike, they made everything easy and stress-free. The staff are just the sweetest people, always kind and welcoming, and they really made me feel at home. And the food… wow, absolutely delicious, every meal was a highlight. If you’re reading this, don’t think twice — book a room at Casa Marisia, you definitely won’t regret it.
I have nothing to complain about

Verified reviewThe location and the views are beautiful. The hammocks on the terrace are nice!
The Funcu hat a really strong drainage smell, but when I asked about it, they only gave me a disbelief look and a roomspray. The stinky smell woke me up at night and I had to regularly put water down the drain in order to get a little peace. Only cold water with no pressure because out of the tanks without pumps. The pillows are the most uncomfortable. Couldn’t use them. Not a good sleep. Breakfast: had to settle for cake and yogurt. The bread was old and chewy. One day eggs, no fork to eat them though. Only coffee, not ok for someone can’t drink or like coffee. The fist day was a little juice. The second day not. The guy (perhaps owner) never greeted us, only a look with a sour face; probably because on the first day I didn’t take up on his over priced wine and food and we went to eat somewhere else instead. Very unprofessional. We went to eat out at the other place after that every day!
Dear Tanja my name is mustafa, I am the husband of Marisa and was not present during your stay. Unfortunately, I wished I could e there to help solving the issues you mentioned. I appreciate very much you critics nevertheless and we took immediate action to find out what went wrong, so it des not happen again. As you maybe saw usually the our guests are quite satisfied and my stuff is known for their friendliness. But sometimes things go wrong and mistakes are made. My sincere apologies for that. If you come again I would be happy to receive a second chance to make your stay more pleasant and your first night will be on us as a small compensation. Also your dinner - because as you did not eat at Casa Marisa you really missed something. The heart and best of the place is the kitchen. Still hope, you had a good time in the caldeiras.

Verified reviewThe whole village was buried by lava in 1991. The village collectively decided to rebuild. Thus the location, next to Pico do Fogo, is otherworldly. Like Mars. So, that is the setting. We met Mountain Guide Mustafa, one of the proprietors. Coolest dude ever. He has heck of a life story to tell. Casa Marisa is rustic and Perfect considering the wild location. It is not easy to build on hardened lava. I absolutely recommend staying at Casa Marisa. Awesome Place! And try climbing Pico do Fogo, or the other easier hikes. Or the myriad other activities offered.
All Great!
Babak, you are the best. Everyone at Casa Marisa is very happy about your support. See you soon again (I will have had added some stories by then :)

Verified reviewHotel in an extraordinary environment, with a beautiful garden and outstanding view. Everything is well organized and clean. The food and wine are on a high quality level, very friendly staff. The hotel has its own guides for the hikes, everybody involved to the business (owner, staff, guides) did a great job. The people at this location are hard working and offer a quality which is beyond normal cabo verde standards. The owner Marisa is a good leader and her husband Mustafa did a lot for the environment, like a new ladder to access the caves. Special thanks to Carlos Fernandez, the guide and wine farmer, who brought me to Pico de Fogo and the caves and showed me around the island the next day. I can definitely recommend him as a very experienced guide.

Verified reviewThere are too many things to name. Mustafa is the best host ever who puts so much care into making sure the guests have their best experience! We arrived early (at 8am) but were able to check in and our room was amazing (bungalow and the hammock on the top with volcano view) Mustafa was so kind to recommend us so many activities (mountain biking, wine tasting…), arranged our hike to the volcano, allowed us to use the shower even when we already checked out, made sure to help us to get to the airport in time for the flight… Fogo is such an amazing island, but what we miss the most is our stay at Casa Marisa :)

Verified reviewSensation of being at McDonalds, meaning you get your order, and good bye. Lets move to the next one. Also when the question came how the breakfast was it was expeditory. You come sit and eat... (could not even asked nothing else...) Result: Not really willing to ask anything else. Trying to get info from other people/via other ways... Sadly, the people were not even replying to the good day... The attention was going only to big groups with guides/or couples with guides. If you are alone look for another place... Also very expensive...that is what I learned after talking with other people outside of the place.
Dear Lenia That’s sad that you had such a Bad Impression with us. I am sure if you would have spent any time with us you would have had a more objective opinion. My team once opened your door for to be sure you are OK. You did not drink or eat anything at our place and talked to no-one. I assure you it is very different of the MacDonalds. We never saw you except at arrival where I personally told you that we are always available for you, and at check out. Our prices are regulated on fair payment to local people - which is unfortunately rarely given for service personal. Come again and we will do everything to wind you back.

Verified reviewWonderful, special and unique spot. Unbelievable how Mustafa and his team created this place!
Due to the volcano magma heath underneath in our particular bungalow it appeared to be impossible to take a shower. It was too hot! However, we were kindly allowed to take a shower in another room. And this ‘inconvenience’ is also part of this very special place!

We got 3 rooms. They were a little bit old. One of them had a bathroom door that had a nail sticking out that caused me a cut.

Verified reviewFirst I will like to give a huge Thank You to the owner of Casa Marisa for his extreme kindness. Our luggage was missing when we flew to Fogo so we continued our trip to Brava and 4 days later when still in Brava the airport called saying they have our luggage, the owner of Casa Marisa was very kind to drive to Fogo airport to get our luggage whilst we were visiting Brava. When we got to Casa Marisa our luggage was there ready for our check-in. Our visit at Casa Marisa was spectacular! It is set with the view of the volcano. We stayed 3 nights and had plenty of activities to do. We stayed in a bungalow and relaxed at the hammocks on the roof in the early evening taking in the views. The meals were delicious! Every staff member was very helpful and kind. I highly recommend staying here.
Dear Nicole the whole Casa Marisa team is very thankful for your great feedback and very generous rating. Here we really look at it to see where we have to work on (beds are I wrk :). it is extremely motivating for us all and rewarding. The luggage affair is totally natural for us. You are our guests far from home and we will take care of you in any way we can. Anytime again.
