How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewFamily hospitality in a house in an excellent location near all the main attractions of Cha (trails, minimarket, bars, etc.). Clean and basic room with careful hosts. Excellent and good priced meals. They also arranged our airport transfer. The climb to Pico de Fogo with Giuliano was wonderful, and he was very patient in guiding us.
The communication was only in Portuguese.... But even if we were not customers with the language they did everything to make it fluent!

Verified reviewlocation was great. we booked the property in order to climb pico de fogo and it was right at the base. food provided by host was tasty and plentiful. Host were friendly.
We initially booked a room with transfers from the airport but having booked we were told transfers were not included and a private transfer was 60 euros each way ( 45 min trip) . the return trip was not a private transfer as we shared with approx 10 other villagers going to town and the driver/owner forgot about us and we were close to missing our flight. the room cost was higher than advertised on booking .com . there was no hot water in our room so we had to have a cold shower. there were no other guests staying at the same time as us. Room was a good size but the bed was a standard double. there was room for a bigger bed.

Verified reviewGreat location as all of the lodges are in cha das caldeiras. Airport shuttle was great although slightly expensive for the journey there (€50). The room I stayed in was very clean. No hot water in any of the properties i think so shower in the daytime. Next to no WiFi so it is good if you want to be off grid. The family living there did not speak English so at times this created problems but the food they cooked was very nice. Remote host could do more to provide information about stay and transport rather than just say "don't worry" 😄

Verified reviewThe people were very nice and generous. They helped me in any way they could. It's a really lovely family. I stayed here for three days, in which they helped me being picked up and dropped off in São Filipe. Also, the son guided me to the top of Pico de Fogo. And the food here was really amazing, best chicken I've had so far!

Verified reviewThe location is perfect. Right at the start for the hike to Fogo. The location in booking is (as of today) not correct, its right in the center of the village. But the owners are superfriendly and can send you the details via WhatsApp. I arrived late because I was hiking till sunset and he waited outside on the street, and after check in I got a really delicious meal. The room has 3 comfy beds, enough plugs to charge and extra blankets. The bathroom is modern and has a shower (unlucky only with cold water). In the main building there are tables and chairs and a small bar. There is beer, wine, softdrinks, water.... Everything is clean and the WiFi works great. Breakfast is included, but I didn't use it as I was out hiking. From the house you have perfect views of Fogo. I can really recommend this place.
TCHAN LOVE thanks you so much 😊

Verified reviewSuperb place to stay in the village of Cha das Caldeiras. The guesthouse is relatively new and taken well care of. The facilities are clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Convenient location just at the beginning of the hike to Pico. There is a hotel bar and restaurant on site with reasonable prices for water and drinks (indeed the same price as in the shop across the street). Do yourself a favor and arrange the food at the restaurant before you arrive, as the food here is absolutely delicious! Also possible to buy a packed sandwich for the early morning hike to the Pico, and perhaps have the breakfast packed (actually not much difference as the breakfast is bread, cheese, boiled egg and some fruits). Would not hesitate to stay here again.
Nothing
On behalf of TCHAN LOVE I would like to thank you very much

Verified reviewThis is a very nice place to stay for couple nights. Quiet, comfortable. Breakfast was included and I have asked for it at 6am, so the Lady just left it from the evening (coffee in a termopot). Also you can ask for a dinner, which is really good, super tasty (Ive got a fish with rice and veggies for 900 escudo). And also you can ask for some wine (industrial or craft homemade, about 200 per glass). The place has not many reviews but it's seems super new, means you will have also super new bathroom which is nice bonus for staying. As for the transfer: you can book the place in Alluger with the room booking. The way from Sao Filipi is 50-60 mins and costs 1000 escudo. As for the trekking: 1. The location is the best, right next to the start of few trekking routes 2. You can ask the owner for a guide, just ask for someone local who is actually based here in Caldeiras and not in Sao Filipe. As for the Pico Grande you will definitely need a guide because it's super tricky route. For the Pico Grande the usual price is 6000 per person but it's could be a discount if you are in group 3. Also you can walk by yourself (without guide) for couple places: e.g Pico Pequeno (it's now that far) and also you can walk to the Forest Monte Velha (about 5 kms till the entrance to the Forest) or even to Mosteiros (about 16 kms in total, 10 kms at the normal road and 6 kms are a bit difficult, inside the forest - not the easiest trail but it's possible)
The only thing is that Geo location on booking isn't correct, this place is exactly on a center of Portela, just tell the Alluger driver you need Tchan Love so he will bring you to the correct place
Thank you

Verified reviewI loved the owners they were so sweet and friendly. And their child was sooo cuute. They organized me a very good guide to hike to the volcano. His name was Du Santos and he was really really a nice guy. During the trip he learned us a little bite Kreol and told us something about Fogo. I liked the accomodation very much, it was clean and confortable. The owner cooked also excellent. So thank you! Obrigada❤️

Verified reviewSize the first minute when we had met Socorro at the airport, he gave us a lovely welcoming( He Went to pick up us at the airport( He’s a collective and private car driver) Lovely guy. Hey, show us all hotspots points for nice photos Before her accommodation, so he’s the owner. I lovely Family, beautiful kids and kind wife. She taught us how to cook cachupa - the most popular traditional caboverdean food, it’s was so delicious( we suggest you to try it) their accommodation it’s a kinda of - be with family to learn and share, we do liked all meal.it’s peaceful place, in the center, view to the vulcano, forest and lot of small vulcano and surrounded by lof of restaurants. Also we had tasted their own traditional wine named Manecon( dry and sweet) sweet was like dry for us 😂, so dry was to strong, bu Socorro has some others wine from the wine company. They have an open explanada where you can: have a drink, have meal, take nap, tan, read, or play with kids. Our room was clean and fresh , everything 100% very good. At the night time we went to casa Ramiro for live music - it was so so cool . Djony was one of our favorite player, he do plays more than 4 musical instruments. We would like to return at their place as soon possible. Don’t worry about how to get out the airport to the Chã Das Caldeiras- He has a car and can go for pick up and drop off. We do recommend.
Everything was fantastic.
