How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Verified reviewThe staff were exceptionally nice, helpful, and respectful, which made a great impression. The highlight of my stay was definitely the entertainment team — they brought so much energy and made the experience truly enjoyable!
However, there were a few issues that affected the overall experience. The air conditioning broke down two days in a row, and there were three blackouts during my stay — one of which lasted about three hours. Additionally, the buffet lunch and dinner lacked variety, with many of the same options being repeated. While there were definitely enjoyable moments, especially thanks to the entertainment team, there’s room for improvement in the facilities and food variety.

For starters the hotel management (Kelvin and Claudia) tried to cover up and not get involved in an incident that I reported about one of the bartenders. Francisco gave me a shot during the disco party and I don’t have a single memory of the rest of that night outside of being touched by him and then being back in my room. When reported they continued to have Francisco make drinks and serve behind the bar I was followed around the buffet hall by a man who was vacationing at the resort. He also tried getting into my room one night. After I made a report he was allowed to continue walking freely around the resort making me terrified for my safety! I left my trip early and had to book a new flight home

Food was horrible, soda machine in the snack bar and buffet never had soda. Their machine juice it’s undrinkable worse than the cheapest artificial juice that you can get in a supermarket. Honestly my family couldn’t eat at this place. The staff admit how bad things are in this place but owner chose to ignore it and keep the money. They never have dry towels for the pool or beach, food was cold most of the time, fishy smell in the bathroom, and short staff for customers service but over staff to sell their “VIP” package. I wasn’t gonna leave a review but there are too many things wrong with this place that I cannot allow others to spend their money and have a bad experience.

Verified reviewThis was our second visit to Viva Tangerine. We booked at a really good price - under US$ 80 per person per night - and at that price the hotel was exceptional value. Staff were absolutely excellent, particularly Yoan (front desk supervisor), Enercida (housekeeping) and the amazing Lava Girl. Despite this, it's clear that there are a lot of reasonably big problems at this property in terms of maintenance. We had no hot water at all in either of our rooms. There was no hot water at all in our block (of about 30 bedrooms) and a lot of other guests were complaining about this. On our first night, my mother (aged 90) had a room with the A/C set to freezing which could not be adjusted, and she was blue with cold the next morning. The next day, water was pouring down the walls, the floor was like a river, the room stayed freezing. A procession of staff attempted to fix the problem and failed. Eventually Yoan rescued us and changed her room (other receptionists had refused, saying the hotel was full). Enercida tried her best, she was rushing around with extra duvets and blankets. If you look up you see damp patches and falling plaster in the ceilings of all the public areas. In the Melt restaurant the upholstery is completely worn out, paintwork is shabby, the place looks atrocious. For US$ 80 a night, you put up with these things. But I noticed that the price now has risen to well over US$ 300 per night per room, and honestly I can't quite see how Viva can expect to charge that type of money without getting the basics right. If there is no hot water in a block it must be rectified within 24 hours, not several days. And on an island with so many excellent upholsterers, really there is no excuse for any furniture to look shabby. It just feels like Viva needs to invest significantly more in maintenance and repairs at this property. I've seen so many other reviews saying the same thing, I just question why they don't.

The food was not good. There was cheap meats, little seafood, undercooked rice, spaghetti with too much salt. The quality of drinks was poor and cheap with no natural juices. The bar featured Piña colada drinks that were unidentifiable as pineapple juice and coconut milk and were made with the cheapest alcohol. The first room we were assigned had to be switched out to another because of the stagnant smell the air conditioner put out.

Verified reviewI will start by saying that I've owned and run hotels for a number of years, so I'm not always the easiest customer. And we absolutely loved Viva Tangerine. Firstly the location. I live in DR and I've always thought Cabarete beach is one of the best in the country. The hotel is just a few steps from the beach, the location is perfect We got our stay for an incredibly low rate (under $60 per person per night) and to be honest we weren't expecting much, but everything about this place surpassed our expectations. The highlight was the entertainment / activities team, led by the wonderful Lava Girl. In all my years of travelling I have never seen a group of entertainers who work as hard as these guys. There was something for everyone - a cookery demonstration, a foam party on the beach which was amazing, salsa lessons, trapeze, a show in the theatre. These guys really made our stay super special and created a lovely atmosphere in the hotel. I also want to mention the exceptional service by receptionist Joan, he took great care of us when we arrived and made sure I got the room I wanted. The food was also well cooked, and much better than we expected for what we paid. We had dinner in the speciality restaurants on two of the three nights, and the service and quality of food was on point. One other plus for me was the size of the hotel. It wasn't too big, so you could walk everywhere in a few minutes. I hate these massive all-inclusives where you have to walk 20 minutes to get a drink or go to the beach, Viva Tangerine is a perfect size. I am going to reserve another stay here, definitely one of my favourites.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are definitely in need of a refurb, and I also saw a lot of the common areas that also need a little TLC. The cleaning standards in the bedrooms was adequate but not exceptional. Based on what we paid the rooms were fine, but in peak season when the hotel is charging more like US$ 300 a night then I think it would be hard to justify the standard of those bedrooms. I would also say that the bar staff seem to constantly be struggling and I think the bar / back-bar really needs to be sorted out. They seemed to be constantly running out of clean glasses, to the point that on our final day they were serving all the drinks in paper cups. And the beer taps were very slow. The staff themselves were amazing, all smiles, but I think the equipment / setup let them down.
