How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Our stay at the property was not the best, mainly due to the service experience. When you’re on vacation, you hope to feel welcomed with a positive and helpful attitude from the staff — but unfortunately, that wasn’t our experience. The team seemed upset or annoyed every time we asked a question, which made interactions feel uncomfortable rather than friendly. Upon arrival, instead of receiving a warm welcome or useful instructions about the property, we were immediately reminded of the check-out time and told that we should ask for anything we needed before 8:45 PM bc she leaves at 9 — which set the tone for the rest of the stay. Additionally, there were several discrepancies between what was stated on Booking.com and what actually happened. For example, after booking, we were informed there was an extra charge for pets, which I don’t recall being clearly mentioned. Also, although Booking indicated that credit cards were accepted, I was told I had to transfer 100% of the payment in advance via bank transfer to confirm the reservation within the next 2 hours if not the reservation would be cancelled. This is very different from the “no prepayment needed” option shown on the website, and it felt misleading. The property itself is nice. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable, but it was acceptable. However, the staff’s attitude really affected the overall experience. It didn’t feel like we were on vacation — it felt more like we were bothering someone by being there. I believe there’s room for improvement in terms of transparency on the booking platform and, more importantly, in staff training to create a more welcoming and guest-focused atmosphere.

Upon arrival, the hotel's opening hours and basic information are provided, guests are checked in, and their reservation information is verified. I must mention several things in this comment, perhaps this will help other guests with future reservations: you can check the terms and conditions on the Booking page to see that we only accept cash payments (no credit cards) and that payments must be made in advance, as we must ensure a secure reservation and that the person will actually arrive (remembering that your reservation was made on the same day). There is a tab on the Booking page called "accommodation conditions." This section mentions both the payment method and the topic of pets. It states that we accept pets, but that pets are allowed upon request. Although we were never told that we would be bringing two pets, we still had no problem with that. It also indicates that we may charge a fee. This information is also sent to you via Booking.com messaging. However, they did not inquire about it through that means either. And in case there's still any doubt, there's another section on the booking page called "Questions and Answers about the Accommodation." Several people have asked questions about the hotel, and the same topic is mentioned in several inquiries. We clarify that we accept pets with an additional charge. I know you had some issues upon arrival because, although we had notified you several times about the pet fee, you didn't agree with the charge. However, we only comply with the conditions and rules we have on the booking page. We apologize if the conditions weren't clear. Possibly, because it was a last-minute reservation, you were unable to verify all this information. We do suggest, to avoid problems with future reservations elsewhere, that you read the booking conditions of the place where you'll be staying, as well as the payment methods and opening hours. Booking.com even provides direct contact with the hotel so you can ask any questions and ensure your next stay elsewhere is comfortable, enjoyable, and tailored to your needs and possibilities.

Verified reviewSpondylus lodge was one of my best accommodations in South America so far! I had a private room; good price, very spacey with own balcony. Comfortable bed and good AC! Free coffee in the morning and filtered water. 5 min walk to the beach. Big common areas and a good common kitchen. The place was very very clean. Staff was nice and helpful! Very quite and tranquil. would def recommend!
If you want to stay right at the beach this is not the place for you. Not very social, but off season and only two other guests there.
