How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe personnel was very helpful and supportive, despite some language issues (limited command of English). Regardless of problems with electricity supply, hot water was available throughout the entire stay. Convenient location for visits to Lalibela churches, tasty breakfasts and good views from the balcony.
The room, bathroom and equipment have aged badly and could benefit from renovation. The bathroom could have been more thoroughly cleaned before our check-in (bathtub, toilet bowl and bathroom floor did not appear cleaned after previous guests). The room had some holes between the door and its threshold, and in balcony windows, through which mosquitoes were able to enter at night. It created some problems, since there were no mosquito nets installed, and persistent electricity disruptions at nights rendered plug-in mosquito repellent useless.

Verified reviewGreat service.
The hotel was overall a decent stay, but the water pressure was quite low, making the shower difficult to use. The faucet functionality was tricky, and the water temperature was often cold. However, I understand that this might be due to local conditions. Aside from this, the stay was comfortable, and the service was good.

Verified reviewA very positive experience, I felt like I was in a three star hotel. Very good location, close to the church complex and to the nearby bars where you can dance and drink local drinks. Everything in the room was fine, a comfortable bed, armchair area and a table, a clothes rack and a luggage rack. In the bathroom there was a bathtub with a stopper and warm water so I took a bath, generally clean and a nice view from the balcony. Electricity and water worked from check-in to check-out (electricity to the minute). In the evening I agreed on breakfast options for the next day and everything was served without a hitch. The service was very nice and helpful. Thank you! :-)
No toilet paper (I had my own) but I'm sure if I asked they would have given it to me without a problem. Communication in English a bit tricky but they do their best. At night there were animal noises which made it a bit difficult to sleep so take earplugs.

Verified reviewMy room at the Alef Paradise hotel had a really beautiful view that I could enjoy from my own little patio. The staff were all very nice and helpful and even set me up with a local guide and transport before I arrived. The free breakfast was really delicious - especially the coffee! Overall, the Alef Paradise hotel is a great value for money and I would definitely recommend to future visitors! To note: the power is only on at certain times of day (evening and potentially a few hours in the morning) but that's more a function of power in the town and not due to Alef Paradise Hotel. Just plan to charge your things at night or have a power bank with you.
I couldn't buy dinner at the hotel the night I was there, which wasn't a huge deal since I just walked to a nearby hotel. There also isn't wifi available here which was a little tricky since I didn't have a local SIM. However, I was able to use the wifi at the hotel I dined at for dinner so it wasn't a big problem.

Verified reviewWe were the only guests at the hotel when we were there last week, because tourism is so low these days, despite Lalibela itself being so peaceful. We were very pleasantly surprised at the fantastic location, and that we could walk to all the churches, including a 5 minute walk with worshippers wrapped in white, on a narrow path to reach St George's early on a Sunday morning which was magical! The hotel served us traditional coffee when we arrived which was great too!
It was sad to be the only people in the hotel but that wasn't their fault. We would recommend others to come to Alef Paradise
