Others have mentioned the steep hill from town, yes it was a challenge after a nice meal and few drinks but well documented and we were aware of the challenge ahead. The location and quality accommodation made the walk worthwhile!

Great accommodation perched above Sarlat, the shared kitchen allowed us to self cater on a couple of of occasions. The rooms were spacious and impeccably clean and the pool was great after a day of sight seeing. Ideal base for touring the area. Amazing breakfasts! Merci Beaucoup Olivier!

    Didn’t want to leave

Wow this place took our breathe away the minute we stepped through the gate. Everything was stunning and so peaceful. The breakfasts were delicious and the shared kitchen was perfect for preparing light meals when we didn’t want to leave this little slice of heaven. The walk back up the hill from Sarlat is steep but is so worth it when you arrive back especially the beautiful swimming pool to cool you down! We ate here on the Sunday evening and the food was outstanding and better than we had in any of the restaurants we ate in Sarlat! Olivier and Naina were the perfect hosts and we were very sad to leave. 1000% recommend!!

This is an exceptional property. Beautifully maintained in a stunning location. Our hosts were welcoming and helpful. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the swimming pool and Dordogne was heaven.

    Having to leave 😪

Absolutely everything! From the warm welcome until the minute we said au revoir, everything was perfect. The breakfast was superb, with Olivier making fresh bread and a different pastry every day for us to try, in addition to the fresh fruit, cheeses, yoghurt, hams and cereals that were on offer every morning. I can confirm that his tarte aux pommes was exceptional, and I could have eaten the whole tart by myself! The swimming pool was a terrific bonus during a very hot stay, as was the effective air conditioning in the room. I was also pleasantly surprised by the guest kitchen at the side of the pool, which housed a fridge and dishwasher, and enabled us to keep our market goodies chilled and readily available as we lazed in the sun. Our allocated room was perfect, with a stunning view over the grounds and pool, and I was very impressed with the quality of the bedlinen, robes and towels. The welcome pack of biscuits and sweets was very well received after quite an arduous car journey, which saw us arrive far later than originally planned. Olivier was a fantastic host, giving us lots of recommendations for sightseeing visits and booking restaurants and tours for us. Every restaurant had a different ambience, but the food was glorious in each and every one - thank you so much Olivier! This has been a perfect holiday in every way, and we intend to return as soon as possible - if I can find some dates that aren't already sold out! I can throughly recommend Au Clos de Mathilde for the perfect holiday in Sarlat (in case I didn't already make that clear 🙂)

    Nothing

Everything. My husband and I have traveled extensively abroad and this is one of the best, if not the best, place we have ever stayed. The setting is absolutely beautiful. The rooms are huge with high quality bed linens with a comfy bed. Olivier and Naina served a breakfast rivaling fine restaurants. Everything home made and presented beautifully. Olivier made restaurant bookings for us every evening and each one was excellent. There is a pool in a beautiful setting with a bar next to it where you can purchase and enjoy beer, wine or sodas. The place is pure luxury and Olivier and Naina were a delight to meet.

Nothing except our stay was too short

By far one of the best place we have stayed throughout our years of travelling. Both Olivier and Naina were one of the exceptional hosts we have met. They patiently sat us down and explained everything a traveller would like to know. The house is beautiful with the view of rolling hills of Dordogne. Rooms were beautifully decorated, sheets were smooth and bed is comfortable like what you will get from a 5 star hotel. Breakfast was tastefully crafted with lots of homemade jams, pancakes and bread not to mention we had the most delicious pie. We will definitely be back with our family and friends. A true meaning of a Home far away from Home. Thank you for the kind hospitality and a wonderful stay. With love, Kent, Celine and Garon

    Can’t think about anything

Our stay at Au Clos de Mathilde in Sarlat-la-Canéda was pure perfection — the kind of dream vacation you never want to end! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest, most gracious hosts who truly go above and beyond to make their guests feel at home. The property is absolutely breathtaking — perched above a canyon, with a beautifully manicured landscape that looks like it belongs in a magazine. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful, with nothing but the soothing sounds of birdsong all around. Mornings began with a delicious homemade breakfast featuring warm, freshly baked bread and exquisite jams made right on the property — an unforgettable treat. The rooms were pure luxury: plush bedding, tasteful decor, and every detail designed for comfort and beauty. One of our favorite features was the heated pool on the premises — the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. Floating in the warm water, surrounded by nature and quiet, was total bliss and added an extra layer of relaxation to an already perfect stay. Olivier is a treasure — he could easily rival any local guide. He provided us with a curated list of attractions, handled reservations for restaurants and activities, and offered insider tips that made our experience truly special. The separate guest kitchen was another huge bonus. It gave us the freedom to prepare simple dinners and enjoy them in the peaceful comfort of the property — no need to head out every night. Au Clos de Mathilde is a hidden gem — luxurious, serene, and full of heart. We left feeling rejuvenated, grateful, and already planning our return!

We loved everything but I would note that we chose to drive to the edge of town rather than walk on the narrow road with cars. There is plenty of parking down the hill.

The property is breathtakingly beautiful- beyond what I expected. Our room was so fresh and inviting, beautiful touches with lovely bath products, bath robes and a sweet welcome gift. The bed was super comfortable, a great bathroom and everything was sparkling clean too! The owners prepared a lovely breakfast for us each morning and they were so kind and helpful without being invasive.

The Booking.com website implied that dinner was available at the property but this was not the case. As it turned out, this didn’t detract from our very enjoyable stay there.

An absolutely stunning place to stay. The property was beautifully presented and the location was lovely, away from the bustle of Sarlat but close enough to walk there for dinner. It is steep on the walk back however so it might not suit everyone but we find that helpful after a lovely meal and a drink or two! Our room was on 2 floors with a very large bathroom at the top of a spiral stone staircase. Excellent breakfast with lots of choices. The hosts are very helpful and attentive. Olivier recommended some restaurants and actually booked the tables for us. We had a lovely swim in the pool which was not heated but warm enough to enjoy even on the 16th October.

A hand held shower head over a large bath which made it difficult to wash hair.

Delightful hosts. Very friendly and helpful. The breakfast each morning was amazing!!!! Homemade jams, breads and croissants. Fresh fruit, yoghurts, cheeses .. .. and the list goes on. The bed was SO comfortable. Our bedroom was within the house but could only be accessed by a separate staircase so felt private. Our bathroom was upstairs and accessed by a spiral staircase within our bedroom. An enormous and luxurious bathroom. Plenty of on site parking. The gardens and pool were beautiful. It would be a perfect place to stay in Summer too. I would thoroughly recommend Au Clos de Matilde.

A perfect place to stay for a trip to Sarlat and surrounding towns. The stunning Clos de Matilde was extremely comfortable, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Attention to detail was second to none. Our room was spacious and light, with a fabulous bed which made for a wonderful night’s sleep. Breakfast each morning was amazing, home cooked extras an added touch. Nothing was too much trouble for Naïna and Olivier. Our hosts were the most wonderful couple, kind, thoughtful, engaging, informative, and great fun! The swimming pool in the gorgeous gardens made for a relaxing end to a day out and about. I recommend Clos de Matilde to any traveller who loves “the best”!

Very nice country house with very charming hosts. Quiet location with wonderful swimming pool and great breakfast in the beautiful garden. The restaurants of Sarlat can be reached on foot if you are willing to walk uphill for 20 to 25 minutes after dinner. Olivier and Naina have super tips for restaurants and sightseeing and do everything to make their guests' stay as pleasant as possible.

Idyllic and faultless. We loved our stay, our girls loved the pool and Sarlat is stunningly beautiful. We walked into town most nights for dinner - it’s a steep walk back but quite enjoyable on a nice evening. The breakfast was lovely, beds were very comfy and our family room was perfect, a home from home and Olivier was super helpful with suggestions. The location is so beautiful and we were sad to leave. If you travel with children the canoeing is a must as is the castle des Milandes. Thank you so much for having us and looking after us 💕. Do not hesitate to book this beautiful place
