Attractive out-of-town hotel with excellent pool

It does seem unnecessarily parsimonious in a hotel of this standard to charge €20 per person per hour for the use of the spa. Although most of the staff are very pleasant a few of them are unsmiling and give the impression of not loving their jobs. The hotel’s website describes the restaurant in glowing terms but in my experience it aspires higher than it actually achieves. It has an attractive menu but the quality delivered is variable, especially the main courses, despite the prices being as high as good local restaurants. Also the restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday evenings, which is probably inevitable for staffing reasons but unhelpful for a hotel so far out of town. In summary I shall certainly return to the Excelsior but if the weather is good enough I shall generally walk a mile down the road to Les Praz to eat at one of the excellent local restaurants there.

I like this hotel very much so it is a shame that there are a few aspects of it that I find disappointing (see below). It sits on its own in Les Tines, an hour or so’s walk from the centre of Chamonix, but it is very conveniently placed both for the local bus service and the local train station. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed without being luxurious. There is a pleasant bar (with very friendly bar staff) and good spa; and in the summer the large outdoor swimming pool is a real asset. In the winter the ski room is well fitted out and spacious, with individual locked cabinets with plenty of space for skis, poles and boots; and there is a ski concession on the hotel premises available for ski and boot hire, Breakfast is adequate without being outstanding. Most of the staff are unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The overall four-star rating is perhaps slightly flattering but the hotel is not alone in this respect.

It is not fully child friendly, meaning if the weather doesn’t allow to swim in the pool, there is not much to do except billiard. The restaurant also doesnt have any children dishes and didnt want to cut the price in half for a normal dish. Also, children pay the normal adult price in a double room. Our room was good, but there were not enough hangers or places to store all the hiking stuff. But overall: very nice hotel!

Very beautiful hotel, great swimming pool, kind staff, good free parking around, location good (close to gare and bus les tines), good restaurant.

No air conditioning in the room. The hotel provided a fan but it was still really hot in the room. We visited in August and temperatures reached 30C.

The hotel is really nice, very close to Chamonix downtown and has a wonderful outdoor pool and restaurant overlooking the mountains. The staff is very friendly.

We were a bit disappointed on our first night that we were unable to eat in the restaurant due to a large group who had taken over the restaurant and the staff were run off their feet so it was difficult to get even some bar food. We did manage to get something in the end and it was ok. The hotel was quite expensive but as it's close to Chamonix it is to be expected.

The room was comfortable and very clean and overlooked the terrace and the pool. The view from the terrace was stunning and the pool was gorgeous. The breakfast was generous and the evening meal on our second night on the terrace was delicious. The hotel is in a quiet area and only a 5 minute walk to the train station which will take you into central Chamonix in 7 minutes. The hotel provide tickets which makes the journey free of charge so it's almost better than being in the centre of Chamonix as it's beautifully quiet with stunning views.

This hotel was until recently Best Western, The whole ambiance and facilities were better then than now. Although quite good the breakfast ( in our opinion is overpriced) a cheaper and adequate alternative can be found in many restaurants in Chamonix. The bar has restricted hours and there are no mid day snack menu available. We did not have an evening meal there as the menu on display was never changed therefore you couldn’t rely on what was on offer. All staff were fantastic and helpful. I can only state a comparison to when I have stayed there in the past , four times the last in 2022 when still a Best Western.

The hotel is in a good location for views of Mt Blanc, busses and train connections into Chamonix. The rooms are comfortable and the mountain view rooms are just that fantastic views. Very quiet. Lovely pool but cold.

We visited end of June. The room was really hot and we struggled to sleep. Note, not all rooms have great views. We were at the back of the hotel and our balcony overlooked the fire escape. You get what you pay for!

Staff were great. Room was clean and a good size Lovely to have a pool to cool off and relax by Parking plentiful and free. It felt secure. Free train ticket available from reception. The station was close by and it was a good service for travelling up and down the valley and accessing lifts. We also used it for trips to Chamonix because it took the hassle out of parking in town. We had an evening meal at the hotel which was tasty and good value in a nice setting; we sat outside on the veranda looking at the sunset over the Aguille de Midi.

The hotel's underground garage was only 180cm high, so we had to drive our electric car, the ID.BUZZ, to Chamonix to charge it.

The accommodation was very clean and nicely furnished. The beds were super comfortable and the price/quality ratio was perfect. The staff was very friendly and spoke English.

I liked the gesture from the staff when they upgraded our room to one butter after we found a spot on the floor looked like puke. The only thing that was needed to improve that there are no A/C and could be hot during the day. However everything else was nice.

Like the overall quality but it is very misleading with the ‘spa’ feature. In countries like France, Italy, and even Switzerland if we book a ‘spa’ hotel, spa (sauna, pool, steam rooms, etc.) is all included and no time limit. This hotel charges extra and pool is closed for winter..

There were two experiences that tarnished my most recent (March 2025) visit. The rooms are described as being equipped with “Nespresso Machine & Teas”. What it doesn’t say is that four Nespresso capsules are provided and if you want more you have to buy them at a euro each. I have no objection to that if you are staying for one night. But I had booked for nine nights and was told the same rule still applied so that once I had used my allowance of four I had to buy more. This seemed unduly parsimonious, especially given that my towels and even my bath robes were replaced regularly. Providing at least one capsule per person per day would seem fairer. I was also disappointed by the variable quality of the restaurant service in the evenings. The hotel’s website describes the restaurant in glowing terms and its prices are certainly as high as some of the better local restaurants at Les Praz such as Le Castel and Cabane. The first time I ate there, I had the tuna tartare (15€) and the trout fillet (29€) and they were both good. However on my second visit I had the French onion soup (12€) and the lamb rack (35€) and I can only describe both of them as shameful. The soup consisted more of lumps of mushy bread than of soup. And the “lamb rack” (35€) consisted of two soggy lamb cutlets consisting of a lot more fat than lean meat swimming in an uninteresting pool of sweet potato purée. I complained about the lamb rack and was given a free cheese course but really, any chef should have been ashamed of serving it. I really hope the kitchen was having an “off night” or the normal chef was absent. In summary I shall certainly return to the Excelsior but I shall in future go out for dinner to one of the excellent local restaurants at Les Praz rather than risking dining in the hotel.

I like this hotel very much so it is a shame that on my latest visit there were a few things that I found disappointing (see below). It sits on its own in Les Tines, at least an hour’s walk from the centre of Chamonix, but it is very conveniently placed both for the local bus service and the train station. Breakfast is adequate without being outstanding. Perhaps most important, the people are unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The overall four-star rating is perhaps slightly flattering but thee days the four-star rating is a very flexible one and the hotel is not alone in this respect.
