How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis is a beautiful old hotel steeped in history and the manager was able to tell us a lot of the history of the hotel and surrounding area. For a beautiful old hotel they had thought about the little modern touches - lots of plug sockets, large TV, quality soaps and shower gels. Onsite private parking was welcomed. The pool in the traditional French garden with its fruit trees was fantastic. The breakfast was a lovely continental breakfast with homemade blueberry muffins. Nothing was too much trouble.
It was a very hot night - 35 degrees so air conditioning would have been a welcome addition but I totally appreciate that this is not possible in an old hotel. A fan was provided.

Verified reviewThe breakfast was lovely. Little handmade pastries every day were joyful. We were given a delicate of wine. The owner made the charm of the building and the story behind the house come to life with his tales and was always very happy to chat. He welcomes his guests into his home and I hope everyone appreciates this as much as we did.

Verified reviewThis was a gorgeous oasis. Walking off the street into a beautiful historical building that was very welcoming. The host was lovely & the garden was idyllic with a wonderful pool. The room was spacious and the bathroom modern. Breakfast in the conservatory was perfect, with a freshly baked treat as a bonus. The town itself was perfect for a bite to eat & drink. Could easily have stayed for a relaxing week.

Verified reviewLoved meeting the friendly welcoming owner and host, Benoit. The hotel is beautifully decorated with a mixture of old world tasteful elegance and quirky little art works. Our room, in particular the bed and bedding was extremely comfortable. We stayed in the room named Vespees, (overlooking the garden), which had a stylish spacious en-suite shower room. Benoit provided us with a tasty continental breakfast and for a small supplement eggs are on offer. There is a fabulous garden at the rear of the property and the hotel is very conveniently placed in Surgeres with restaurants nearby. The town has an interesting castle and park, with cafes along the way, to while away an hour or two. There are music and art festivals from mid July onwards, which we unfortunately missed. stayed one night , but I’d go back to stay there quite happily again. Thank you Benoit for introducing us to Surgéres. Hopefully we’ll meet again.
In all honesty, the photographs on the site gave me the impression it was more rural, but in fact the H de Surgéres is placed in a town. This could have been my misunderstanding and if I’d done more research, that may not have happened, but as I said in my review thé hôtel and host outweighs any disappointment and in fact staying there in the town suited our needs admirably. Benoit offers a beautiful home within an interesting setting.
thank you so much for leaving such a comprehensive "professional like" review ! :) very helpful. It was a pleasure to have you and I would be happy to welcome you again...

Verified review“ H “ de Surgères. From the moment he opened the door Benoit was the perfect host, relating the interesting history of this beautifully presented house and carrying our bags to our room on the first floor. Our room was very large with two windows overlooking the street in front of the house and our ensuite facilities were excellent; spacious, clean with a separate toilet. Rooms at the back overlook a lovely well cared-for garden with a small swimming pool for guests. Like everything in this establishment, breakfast, served in a conservatory, was a treat: a wide range of tasty mostly local food. Each day Benoit baked something special, such as a madeleine or a cookie to provide a final personal touch. Anyone wanting cooked food could get two eggs for a small supplementary cost. Within no more than three or minutes’ walk from the centre of Surgères, there is a choice of restaurants. In fact the nearest is but 25 metres away serving genuine excellent Moroccan food in a special ambience. Free street parking is available at the front door and the main line station with local trains to la Rochelle and Poitiers is at most a 15 minute walk away. This is a Chambres d’Hotes, so a guest house rather than a hotel but it provides a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay. It has most mod cons, though no air conditioning or lift. Electric fans are provided and help with luggage is good-naturedly given by Benoit himself.
Nothing we didn't like at all. A house of this nature does not lend itself to either lifts, A/C or veding machines. It's not a hotel.
thank you so much for this touching and comprehensive comment ! I'm happy to see you enjoyed your stay at the house. It was a pleasure to have you with us... Hope to see you again in the future for some other little "treats" :)

Verified reviewHaving found the main hotel on the main road in the middle of town my wife looked at me with that ‘what have you brought me to’ look. One should never judge the book by the cover as, once inside the large double doors of the inner yard one finds an extremely well-appointed gite, ideal for us as a couple or a family with two children who would be in bunk beds in an area off the main bedroom, Yes there is a bed settee in the living room cum kitchen but our opinion would be six people might be a bit of a squeeze. The kitchen is small but perfectly usable, we cooked most nights with no problem at all. Outside there is a fair-sized swimming pool with a surround that was almost finished when we stayed as well as an extensive garden leading to the rear of the main hotel where one could get breakfast or an evening meal if one so wanted. All in all a nice place to stay in a small town that has a fascinating history and an extensive park area with the old chateaux and church.
thank you for sharing that comprehensive comment ! :) I'm happy to see you enjoyed your stay in Surgères

Verified reviewFirst hotel on our long series of stays in France and Portugal. From the street side the H looks like another small town bed and breakfast… but once you enter it is one wonder after another. Charming settings. Many artefacts in this lovely decor have been carefully curated to satisfy the French intellectual as well as the cosmopolitan traveler. That property has style and manners, like Benoit, our host. The staff went above and beyond the call to help us with our big suitcases when we checked in and also when we went to the Surgères railway station. Benoit even gave me a lift once I had dropped our rental car down the street from the H. I couldn’t have chosen a better location and place to stay. Location, Cleanliness, Services, Culture, Calm. A real find a few kms from Rochefort and La Rochelle!
the street entrance is not very obvious…. hard to spot from the street when you are driving, so maybe having some parking instructions or tips would help guests
