Room was tired and very basic. Bed was comfy but there were some very creaky floorboards that needed avoiding when getting up for a midnight wee.

Breakfast was amazing - couldn’t fault the food or the very attentive but not overbearing receptionist/waiter. What a lovely chap! Good to have a bar downstairs and such a shame it wasn’t busier and it’s a cracking place.

Stayed in room 4. It was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in ! After running over 3 miles and walking another 7 miles, I should have slept like a log, but I didn't. Mattress springs and bed made an awful noise and rocked like a boat on any slight movement. The bottom sheet was not pressed Could of presented room better made a feature of the existing fireplace with large mirror and put a larger TV on the wall Only one bedside table Lack of USB/ plug sockets No vegetarian or vegan options on the menu even though I messaged ahead of our stay. No milk or butter alternative alternative The bathroom was quite nicely presented. However, one wall looked like they should have tiled. There was dirt and dust behind the sink floor, and the outer ledge of the shower was dirty. The shower door frame needs replacing The shower door was a bit of a squeeze to get through Hole in wall decoration, problems may be with previous damp or roof leaking hidden by a chair The room was dark with one small window and one ugly bedside lamp There is no signage to say which is the entrance to the hotel and that the reception is upstairs. The hotel has the potential to be really good but needs improvement

Location close to Hadrian's wall Breakfast room with nice ambience View of the bridge from the breakfast room Hot shower WiFi Recommend the fish & chips across the street Staff were friendly

The hotel was dated and in need of a little more TLC in the shared areas. Our shower was rickety and the furniture very old.

Very polite and helpful staff. Historic building with ample parking and beautiful location right next to the river. We found the hotel ideal for exploring the local area when looking to walk Hadrian's Wall and visit the Kielder forest. The breakfast was plentiful with a help your self continental and a cooked to order hot meal.

Issue with the plumbing in the allocated bathroom, which was rectified by being given access to another shower to use.

A disaster due a very unsavory hotel and an absent manager.
    • Leisure trip
    • Couple

Our room smelled of damp, the bed consisted of 2 stacked mattresses, which provided an unstable and uncomfortable sleeping experience. The room was poorly decorated and was not welcoming. The shower head was moldy and the water did not drain away properly - the shower rail had broken parts (sharp eges) and the sliding door was missing and the heat control was difficult to regulate effectively. The TV was a cheap, small screen TV with poor sound and picture quality. The screen displayed a vertical red line indicating a malfunction. The club chair was unstable. Overall, the room was unsavory. We stayed the night as we had been travelling all day, hoping breakfast would redeem things - it did not. Breakfast was served during the short period of 0700 & 0900hrs. Unable to attend until 0900hrs, we were asked to pre-order, which we did expecting freshly cooked meals. We were disappointed - table allocated had a broken bowl in the floor underneath, so we moved. I tried the very modern coffee machine but received only dregs in my cup, the waitress discovering that there were no coffee beans in the machine.......a poor start. Our meals arrived and clearly only the eggs had been freshly cooked, all other items had been previously cooked and kept under a heat lamp, so dry........in particular, the 'grilled tomato' (half a tom!) was indescribable. The room and breakfast were great disappointments so I asked to speak with the manager. The manager was, surprisingly, not in the hotel, so the waitress telephoned him. I attempted to explain my my complaints but the manager kept butting-in not allowing me time to speak. His attitude was deplorable. I asked for a refund for the second night as we would not be staying any longer - he referred me to Booking.com and then cut me off! We left the hotel before 1000hrs. The Anchor is not a welcoming hotel, certainly not worth £95 per night. I have complained to Booking.

The only thing liked was that the Wi-Fi worked as expected, albeit that one member of staff, a newly employed bar operative, tried to help with things best she could. However, all other aspects of this hotel were well below the standard expected of a 4 star hotel...as advertised on Booking.com. Indeed, I am sorry to say that this hotel does not deserve any stars at all. Photos will be provided to Booking.com when I submit my complaint.

No issue with the hotel. It was a little rowdy late into the night with presumably customers leaving the hotel.

Excellent chef both for the evening meal and breakfast. The room wasn’t fancy but it suited our requirements for a single night. Definitely good value for money and good location. Plenty of history about the building.

The room was very small with no en suite. The bathroom was down the corridor. There were no proper curtains (just thin linen drapes) and, unfortunately, quite a bit of mould on the windowsills. The lack of pressure in the shower meant that you couldn't stand up to take a shower, and the tap to shower head conversion was broken. I think this was due to the lack of water pressure.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast was nice. The view from the breakfast room across the river was absolutely lovely.

It was very tired, hardly maintained and hardly fit as a hotel under booking .com banner. We tried to find alternative accommodation without success and asked for assistance from booking.com without success. We could not face eating there so found a good restaurant in Hexham, the Beaumont. The room was oversold. With no working heating in any form poor size, poor quality and ineffective bedding. It was very cold over night. The shower and w.c. were very poor and we could not face using the shower. All in all the worst hotel experience we have ever had! We left early at 0705. There was nobody to complain to in the evening when we got back or in the morning when we left.

    Nothing.

1 chair only Bed mattress - cheap as. Awful. Towels - like t- towels. Coffee from bar - absolutely the worst luke warm coffee I.ve tasted from any uk hotel. £3.75. An absolute rip off from a crappy machine. Room - fair price? £60 / night max. Cooked breakfast woeful. Sausages like rubber chews. Streaky bacon awful - back bacon next time. X3 tiny mushrooms - paltry. Half a small tomato. Fried Egg okay. Coffee took 5 mins to dispense from the machine - awful stuff. Cheap Bramwell.s brown sauce- need HP sauce! Cold bedroom - no heating, just an electric oil filled radiator. Useless. TV ...could only only watch one channel. Dire. TV was the size of an A4 letter. Sky TV in bar? Nope. Dodgy Fire stick ...signal kept dropping out. Embarrassing. Bar a mess - nothing like the online web photos - felt conned. Trade description act job. Smell in lobby awful. Dirty stair threads - scrub em. Food in bar? Pizzas apparently. If shop bought I might have bought one. Homemade, in there,no chance. Hotel doesn't know it s audience Anyone with standards,I.m sorry just wouldn't stay for more than one night. Guy didn't know what price we d been charged ...already paid Booking.com ...adamant £162 ISH was too cheap. Tried to get us to pay a £10 early room ready charge, which we d already cleared on line, had agree with Booking.com I.ll give this hotel another 6 months before it has to close, be sold. Management clueless , delusional. Don't get me wrong, the owners were friendly but it s my duty I feel to warn you off this hovel Car Park awful. Potholes, uneven, unkempt. Should have known as soon as we turned up.

The owner and lady partner were very friendly. ( but clueless) View from room okay.
