How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe hotel is in a great location, overlooking the seafront and the beach, though neither of our rooms had a sea view. The hotel was very clean and the furnishings were of a high quality and well maintained. The staff were very polite and friendly. A lovely breakfast was included; a mix of buffet items and freshly prepared hot dishes.
We had to wait for almost half an hour to check in, this despite arriving at the hotel within our pre-selected time slot. This was due to the only member of staff available at this time serving a large group of non-residents in the bar, before attending to guests at the check in desk. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening. There was an extensive menu and the food was tasty, but it was very expensive for what was actually on the plate and the portions quite small. I don't usually order desert when eating out but I needed to on this occasion as I was still hungry after my main. The hotel in general seemed to be much more expensive than when we stayed a few years ago. Bar prices seemed high and the price of rooms expensive. No wonder the vacancies sign was displayed throughout our stay. We will probably stay at the Caerwylan again, due to the great location, but will have to save up for a good while first and avoid eating in the restaurant.
We are thrilled to hear you chose to return and enjoyed another stay with us. We are very sorry that you had to wait to check in. This was an unfortunate situation that happens only very rarely. As soon as management became aware that a large group had arrived unexpectedly, they stepped in to assist as quickly as possible. We do apologise that this wasn’t soon enough to make your check-in smoother. We also appreciate your comments regarding our pricing. Since your last visit, costs have increased across the hospitality sector. Wherever possible, we use fresh, locally sourced produce from nearby suppliers, which can carry a small premium. Our starters are priced from £8 and our mains from £16, and we aim to balance the menu with a range of options at different price points to suit varying preferences. It’s wonderful to know you value our location and that you would consider staying with us again. We very much look forward to welcoming you back in the future, and will do our best to ensure your next visit is as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

Verified reviewHotel was lovely. The staff were very helpful and efficient. The hotel was in a lovely location, right on the beach with wonderful views. Breakfast was very good.
There was a lovely garden area with chairs and tables but no parasols. Normally it wouldn't matter but we stayed during a heatwave and it would have been so nice to sit out. No bar snack menu at lunchtime. P.s. if you want fish and chips, Castle Fish and chips is really good. It has long opening hours - lunchtime and evening but be prepared to queue.
Thank you for the lovely review — we're delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay and the service. You certainly had some amazing weather! We really appreciate your feedback regarding the garden parasols. We do have some available, but tend to keep them stored as leaving them out can damage the grass. That said, we'll make sure it's clearer to guests that parasols are available on request.

Car parking
Thank you for your feedback! We're glad to hear you enjoyed the breakfast and found our staff to be helpful and welcoming. We’re sorry to hear that the car parking didn’t meet your expectations - due to the position of the hotel, the car parking can sometimes be tricky. There is free street parking outside the front of the hotel, as well as free parking on the road below. Alternatively, we have a carpark to the rear of the hotel, which is chargeable per night. As you can imagine, this does get booked up in advance rather quickly so we do advise adding car parking to your booking when making your reservation to guarantee you get a space.

Verified reviewrooms had been recently renovated to a good standard which certainly exceeded my expectation. usually in Wales hotels look tired
The only downside was the ridiculously early checkout time of 10am . Most hotels have a 11am or 12 noon checkout. Apart from this the whole experience was very good
Thank you for your feedback! We're glad the renovated rooms exceeded your expectations and that you had a great overall experience. As a small independent hotel with a dedicated team, our 10am checkout helps us prepare rooms thoroughly for incoming guests. That said, if you'd prefer a slightly later checkout next time, please do get in touch in advance—we’ll do our best to accommodate your request. We're glad you enjoyed your stay overall and hope to welcome you back in the future!

Verified reviewLovely friendly staff and hotel was in a great location. We were only there two nights so a very brief stay, but the location was excellent breakfast was good and provided for all our needs. Shower in bathroom was good.
Our room was ok in size, but it's an old building and decor a bit dated in the rooms, but otherwise all perfectly charming.
Thank you for the lovely review! We're glad you enjoyed the location, breakfast, and our friendly staff. We appreciate your feedback on the decor and hope to welcome you back again soon!

Verified reviewThe staff were very helpful, attentive and friendly. There were enough staff on duty all the time making for good service. The location is great. The Criccieth bay is small and the hotel ideally positioned with an outdoor area and lounge that overlook the bay.
The rooms could have had a bit more decoration in them to lift the ambience as they are quite functional.
Thank you for your kind words! We're pleased you enjoyed the service, staff, and beautiful location. We appreciate your feedback on the room décor and will keep it in mind for future improvements.

Verified reviewexcellent breakfast and good beers . very clean room
the restaurant menu in the evening was good for a restaurant but some lighter meals as a choice would have been good even if they were served in the bar.
Thank you for the great feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the breakfast, beers, and cleanliness. Your suggestion about lighter evening meal options is much appreciated and will be taken into consideration.

Verified reviewThe staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.
My room was at the back overlooking the kitchens and I could hear a humming noise all night long. Also the room was very cold and neither the radiator nor the towel rail in the shower room would switch on.
Thank you for your feedback. We're pleased you enjoyed the food and found our staff friendly. We're sorry to hear about the heating issues—had you mentioned it during your stay, our team would have been happy to assist with the towel rail and boost the room heating. For the best views and room selection, we always recommend getting in touch directly with us, as third-party sites like Booking.com allocate rooms automatically. We hope to welcome you again and hope we can be of more assistance with the room allocations.
