How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe check in went very smoothly and the owners communicated with us very well. Our key was waiting for us upon arrival. The house and our room was immaculate.
We were in a room named Coll. It was at the very top of the house in a converted attic. We were carrying fairly heavy luggage up a normal staircase then a narrow winding staircase which was more difficult to navigate. The slopping roofs in the room were very low in places and both myself and husband banged our heads several times. If you look closely, there are marks along the wall where others have probably done the same. My husband could not comfortably sit up in bed due to the slope and using the bathroom was difficult for him if standing up!!! We are of average height but anyone over 4ft would find it very uncomfortable. It may be a good room for children but we both struggled to be comfortable there. The house is on a steep slope which we managed to walk up and down but it wouldn’t be suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Verified reviewClean, easy entry, quiet parking. Good quality refreshments and hot chocolate. Nice toiletries.
The room was under the stairs , which i thought cute but had a special bed to fit in. Which was very high. Was very narrow. Nowhere to put bags or side table /shelf to put my glasses. Could hear other rooms tvs.

Verified reviewClean, modern furnishings with a nice shared lounge with sofa table and chairs. Very nicely furnished and clean.
Everything was as expected, such as self check in but it was a little strange having no one to greet you. It wasn’t really a problem though. Just unusual.

Location. Hard to find
Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Not sure why you have marked us down so low by saying that the guest house is difficult to find, I’m not sure what else we can do as we can’t change our location, and all other guests don’t seem to have a problem as our Google page leads you right to our location….and not to mention the 2 huge signs on the exterior of the building.

Verified reviewConvenient to the port. Good quality toiletries and drinks.
Parking was difficult. Bed and in particular the pillows were very uncomfortable. Bedside light not working.
Hi Valerie. Thank you for you review. I’m sorry that you found the parking to be a problem, perhaps you could elaborate on what the problem was, as there are 3 well spaced out parking spaces. Granted that parking is limited to three spaces, plus a space on the road when available, but given that many guest houses in Oban don’t offer any parking, I find it difficult to complain about our parking. Perhaps the problem was your driving rather than our spaces? Im sorry that the pillows weren’t suitable for you. Unfortunately it’s difficult to cater for everyone, as not everyone likes the same sort of pillows, but had you mentioned it to us we could have given you different pillows. Likewise for the lamp, we can only fix something when we know it is not working. Judging by your review, I’d say you were pretty difficult to please.

Verified reviewGreat location with easy walk into town, to ferries and to trainstation. Clean and nice sized room with comfortable bed/pillows, tray with coffee/tea/biscuits and two water bottles provided. Sitting room with travel books and other reading material on location.
One of our rooms was located under the roof with slanted ceilings and a very tiny bathroom located in a closet. The shower was very small with low waterpressure and inconsistent water temperature. Written instructions on how to turn on the shower would have been appreciated, especially since there was not staff on location. We made it work, but it would be helpful if the room description on the homepage would list the small shower, slanted ceilings and the small, narrow stairs up to the room. Any person with mobility issues and /or larger luggage would find this room challenging.

Hi Brian, I’m really sorry to hear that was missed during your stay. The mobile number for the host is displayed in our rooms, had you have called I would have been able to bring you a cup immediately. My apologies again. I hope you enjoyed your time in Oban.

Verified reviewWell appointed and lovely collection of books
The bed was boxed in so not really long enough for a tall person.
Hi Graham. Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything that can be done when it comes to the dimensions of the room, however, I appreciate your feedback and I hope you had a wonderful trip to Oban.

Verified reviewThe fan provided in the room was very helpful since the evening as hot. Access to the building was smooth and parking was a bonus.
No hair conditioner. It’s hard to pack items like this when you’re traveling by air and providing a small bottle in the room would have been greatly appreciated.
Hi Lauren! Thank you for a perfect review and also thank you for your feedback, it’s greatly appreciated.

As room was in attic space, room & ceiling height was lacking and access up 2 flights of narrow stairs a bit tricky.

Verified reviewThis is a beautiful well appointed Victorian guest house in a nice location overlooking Oban. Only a 5 minute walk from the town centre and all its amenities. The guest house was lovely. The room was clean with ensuite facilities, and the bed comfortable. Tea, coffee and a fantastic hot chocolate supplied with the kettle in the room. I had a quiet and a good night's sleep.
I booked a single room and stayed in the room called Ulva which like others is named after a Scottish west coast island. Now I've stayed in many a single room of varying sizes over the years but this was easily the smallest! Given the size of the guest house and its generous proportions, this has the feel of a single bed and ensuite being shoehorned into a large cupboard. It was like sleeping in a cabin bed with the wall at the base, down one side and at the head of the bed. Theres just enough room to pass along the room down the open side of the bed. The ensuite beyond the wall at the head of the bead was equally cramped. You can sit on he toilet with your knees under the wash basin with your toes against the shower cubicle. The shower could do with a bit of attention. In particular the shower head on the riser was a bit flaccid and kept drooping despite attempts to tighten it. The shampoo and shower gel were good but the dispenser was attached to the wall above head height making it difficult to use. However the most annoying thing was the extractor fan. The slightest flick of the bathroom light switch will leave this running into the next millennium and if like me you have a calling in the night, then go in the dark so you have a reasonable chance of getting back to sleep afterwards! While this room was clean, comfortable and quiet, this space or lack of was more akin to caravan living! Fine for a one night stop over but any longer, forget it and get a bigger room.
Hi, thank you for your detailed review. Unfortunately there isn’t much that can be done about the dimensions of the room. It is our cheapest room and we think the price reflects well on what we have to offer.
