How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewRoom clean and comfortable bed, the library bar was quiet and comfortable, as a female solo traveller I felt very relaxed in the bar, the cocktails were excellent and staff very friendly and could not do enough to make you feel welcome and comfortable.
Nothing.

Verified reviewBeautiful castle, wonderful staff, very helpful. Amazing grounds plenty of parking.
unfortunately the room we were in looked tired and was not 4* as advertised, hope it was not all the rooms. Very difficult spiral staircase to climb which was not helped by the rope which acts as a handrail was broken in places.

Verified reviewThe building and setting was beautiful.
Very strict particularly around breakfast. You had to book a table for breakfast. One couple in my party did not book the breakfast option, and when she was checking in could not get breakfast as it was fully booked. There were loads of empty tables in the restaurant for quite a while at our booking time. We believed that we had booked a table of four at reception for us and the remaining couple in the party but we were told very assertively when we arrived at breakfast that we had not - we were mistaken. We were given two tables beside each other with 2 metres in between? Heard another couple being told very assertively that they were early despite lots of tables being empty!

Verified reviewEvery corner of the castle is absolutely magnificent. Take your time to explore the castle and the grounds. Restaurant serves good quality food, although on a more expensive side, but that's what you get at a 4 star establishment.
Evening Aidas, Thank you for the lovely review. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay and hope you return in the future. Kind regards Andrew W

Verified reviewAmazing place with character in a lovely location. Friendly staff always keen to ensure you have what you need. Top marks to the restaurant team and chefs the food was exceptional 👌
There was only two small annoyances, no communal coffee making facilities. In the restaurant there is a member of the team that really needs to pick her feet up when she walks or get footwear that fits, was ok at first but did get pretty annoying.

Verified reviewEvening meal wasn't delivered to our table as had previous been described to us by the waitress, which left us feeling a little cheated considering meal for two high price. Breakfast wasn't straight forward as you needed to go walkabout to find where the food was. Not all the staff were pleasant, but this was offset by those who were. The room was lovely, as it wasn't in the court yard, but the castle itself.
It was had to read the menu in the very dim lights in the restaurant, maybe fine for people younger than us, but most of the guests looked around our age group. Reception, is also very dimly lit, so it was very difficult to check it, as almost impossible to read required information. We were supposed to be taken to our room, but the gentleman assigned to us vanished up the staff stairway with our case. So we were left to find our own way, got lost, and ended up back at reception quite awhile later. Thankfully, we were assisted this time. We couldn't use to lift, as an option, as we weren't told what floor our room was located on.

Verified reviewI cannot rate this hotel and the attentive staff highly enough, literally everything about our stay was 100% perfection.we were the guests of the day so had a room upgrade and boy did it deliver..I felt like royalty in the most comfiest of four poster beds. The evening meal and breakfast were 1st class and the team were so attentive, always on the go and were extremely accommodating..such a well presented Castle..Any hotel we stay in from now on will be measured on what Lumley Castle provided and I honestly don't know how it can be beaten!! Bonus of seeing a lovely pussycat having the roam of the Castle too !! 🏰
There was literally nothing not to like,no faults what so ever !!

Verified reviewThe novelty of the building being a castle is the only positive of this stay, the actual operation of the building as a hotel was a massive disappointment and fell well short of expectation, along with a complete lack of customer service
The hotel is dirty in both public areas and room, every surface of the public areas was dusty and needed a good clean The room is tired, cramped, the carpet is work, the paint needs re-painting, the mattress was old, tired and lopsided and didn't get any sleep The wifi doesnt reach the guest rooms and barely works in the public areas either, even the staff can't operate the credit card terminals in the bar without moving to the corridor The staff in the bar were ill informed and had very poor customer service skills. They make things up as they go, tell guests different things. They offer low coffee tables to eat dinner on, which was uncomfortable and awkward. The atmosphere is awkward, they need better background music and create some atmosphere. It was like sitting in a nursing home with every table occupied and everyone talking softly as every table can hear each other, and they are all doing the same. Then the staff come in and you get amusement from the different stories they make up to the next table as to why something didn't work or was wrong, and as the staff member left all the tables of guests look at each other, laugh and shake their heads The food was very average and not restaurant quality and was over priced for the quality We had other peoples drinks added yo our bill The front desk staff basically ignore you anytime you walk past and check in was cold and generic. The staff in every area of this hotel need to get some personality, training in how to talk to people, and training in the hotel offerings and service
Good evening, With this been an anonymous review, I can't investigate the issue you had with your room as I don't know when you stayed or your room number. The feedback you describe regarding the bar area is very different from what we normally receive and I am sorry the ambiance in the bar was not to your liking. Kind regards Andrew W

Verified reviewWe loved the old world charm and the historical significance of the castle! The surrounding area is beautiful! The food was fantasric both dinner and breakfast.
The staff were not that friendly sadly. It felt like an effort for them to be there at reception and in the bar. The dining room staff were better and we had a lovely server for our dinner. The castle is tired inside which is to be expected for the age and the price point.
Evening Bev, Thank you for the kind words regarding our food offering, and the staff at dinner. I am disappointed you did not find the reception and bar staff friendly as this would not have been intentional. Kind regards Andrew W
