Absolutely fabulous gem 10mins away from Dover

Talking about quirkyness: Some of the vintage wooden doors inside the property do not fully close so some occupants may miss a bit of privacy (the bathroom door for instance demands a bit of fiddling around for a proper full shut). There's no dishwasher (just a mention for those who think they can't live without one for a week or two). The windows are absolutely vintage so you will hear strong winds and may have some condensation on the insides (depending on the season of your stay).

Very British apartment located on the first floor of a beautiful house in the tiny village of St. Maragret's at Cliffe (just a 10min drive from Dover harbour). Quirky, well-aged interior with that typical hard-to-explain cosiness (and beautiful smell) you only encounter in an older British house. We especially loved the huge bathtub, the kitchen and the living room. I'm sure that some picky people will miss a modern update but we - being anglophile - absolutely loved it especially for that. There's plenty of free (and safe) parking about 2mins by foot up the road next to the church. Best of all, though: The Smugglers Inn pub right next door: It's a proper village pub right next door (literally 15 seconds away) that has incredibly good food and a very nice garden in the back. On the other side of the road you can find an extremely well-sorted local village shop ran by the most friendly people which has really everything you will need during your stay (There's a Tesco 24h supermarket 10mins away by car as well - but please don't use this. Go to the village shop and buy local).

Front door lock needed some WD40 as it was a bit stiff. Parking was at the local free car park. This was OK.

Self-catering, plenty of books, comfortable, TV and Wi-Fi.

Enjoyed it BUT please sort the front door, the fire escape access and the privacy/security.

Only one single door mortice key is supplied is not good. It's also stiff, difficult to lock and needs lubrication. The only way to lock the door is by the this lock which means if one person goes out they must lock the other person in upstairs to secure the property. Also, how the hell do people escape if there's a fire downstairs in the commercial business property? This is probably the most important issue of this rental property... There is also a very disconcerting glass panelled door INSIDE the entrance hallway of the PAX property that leads into the commercial business. This feels very weird and highly insecure and compromises privacy. The access to the garden is also rather naff having to walk food and drinks along the rough and stoney lane to the garden gate. Lastly, although the property's kitchen is very well equipped there are cheap pans that are worn out and warped which could do with replacing.

Location is great although parking is not - and certainly not explained as well as it could be. Beds are very comfortable and the overall homeliness is charming.
