How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Requires a little more attention to detail in terms of cleanliness of the bathrooms.
Decent room for the price relative to the others available in Edinburgh. The bathroom is just sufficiently clean. Very close to the bus stop to go into the city centre. Great restaurants around.

It was just a bit to expensive for a room with just a bed and a shared bathroom in my opinion.
The owner was very friendly. I met him in front of the house, when I wasn't sure if I was at the right place. The room was clean and spacious. The accommodation is near the tram and generally close to the centrum with some good restaurants nearby.

Noisy guests (not owner’s fault), noisy bed. The bathtub doesn’t have a curtain so the floor is always wet
Very good location, 10-15min walk to city centre. The house was very clean, the room was spacious with a good bed with fresh linen, hairdryer, kettle with coffee and tea. There is a kitchen with everything you need and a very clean bathroom. Wi-Fi was excellent and the staff very nice and friendly

Bed creaked every time I moved a little, TV only showed Netflix and YouTube, no aerial connected.
Central, clean, good sized room, full sized duvet, bed and sofa comfortable, nice TV in room too. Bathroom was modern and always clean. Small kitchen available with microwave

Room is very small, in basement without possibility to completely open windows. Way too expensive for what you get.

Pictures should make it clearer that is a shared bathroom if you are not in the twin room. Bathroom was spotlessly clean and warm nevertheless.
Great location in a quiet corner of Edinburgh halfway between Leith and the centre. Very comfortable bed and room.

The walls are quite thin and I heard a person taking a dump at 2 am

The exterior door did not lock. It only locked if you closed it from the inside. If you closed it from the outside it did not lock. I expect accomodation to be secure. Quick response from staff to tell me as much.

Was a little bit cold, especially in the bathroom. There wasn’t possibilities to turn hot aircon on.
The position was on point, the room was the cleanest I’ve ever been in the UK, the bed was comfy and the bathroom was perfectly clean, modern and big(also, since there was a shared bathroom I appreciated the cleanness ever more).

It’s a bit dark cause we stayed in a basement room. The shared bathroom is modern and clean, but sharing it with several other parties can mean longer wait times.

No toilet roll in stock when it had run out , tg i had tissues with me , or a towel or paper towels to dry hands as this is a shared bathroom , plus there was no bathmath either after shower your onto wet floor.

So little effort has been put into the place to make it nice. It was very underwhelming for this price range. Felt more like a hostel priced for a hotel.

The bed is not very comfortable.
The room was very clean. The shared bathroom is very clean as well. The location was perfect, 4 mins to the tram and bus stations.

The room is relatively basic, not a luxury room as advervitised. The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows smelt of previous guests. The bathroom is OK, but you share it with four other rooms. You need to be aware this is in the basement of the building so the noise from the street is quite intrusive. You can park on the street but it is restrictive parking and you have to leave by 7am to avoid charges. The price was way too high for such a simple room. I tried to help the owner by pointing these things out. His rude and dismissivd response was the final straw, hence me writing the review. I simply can't understand the previous good reviews - this was not my experience.
The room was a reasonable size and clean.
