We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomLike any old building, the property has some quirks. They didn’t bother us, but it probably won’t suit anyone who is looking for a modern style property.
Spacious - a big sitting room with comfy seating for everyone, and a good sized kitchen with a big table. Bedrooms were a good size too.

United KingdomIt's a lovely old house but we felt that the kitchen could benefit from being cleaner and more organised. The garden is lovely but quite overgrown. The patio area and the garden furniture need attention as it would be very pleasant to sit in the garden.
We loved the location of the house. The house was lovely, quite quirky and full of old charm. We had a comfortable stay and we enjoyed exploring the local area as the countryside was beautiful. We had a lovely meal at the local pub which is only a short walk from the house.

United Kingdomthe bins were full by the time we got there so there was nowhere to put the rubbish. and no local bins/tip. so we just had to leave the rubbish as neatly as possible. there was a lack of pint glasses too.
we enjoyed the garden a lot as it was sunny although the grass could have been cut / garden better kept. we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others looking for a relaxing weekend with friends.

United KingdomWe couldn't fathom the second cooker, and the boiler smelt very strongly of oil.
We knew from the pictures and the messages that this would be a real one-off with some quirky features and that's exactly what it was. Loads of space, lovely rooms and plenty of utensils etc.

United KingdomIt was a little cold as you'd expect with a big old house but the radiator didn't work in the room I was in so it was very cold at night. However there was a little electric heater we used. All the other rooms the heating worked fine. Upstairs shower wasn't the best, downstairs shower was great though.
Beautiful location, garden was lovely. House was an amazing warren of interesting rooms for the kids to explore. Lots of sofas for lounging about in the evening. The kitchen was big enough to cook big dinners for everyone and sit down at the big kitchen table to eat. Lovely views from all the windows. Nice little pub just along the road in Swinton with a beer garden.

United KingdomIf you decide to stay in a really old house, you have to accept it will be a bit shonky in places, some peeling paper, a few cracks here and there etc. The cooker could probably do with a deep clean though, and it might be nice to turn the heating on in the colder months, for the guests' arrival. Though I appreciate the cost of heating is astronomical, it would create a cosier, more homely first impression. Once the heating was on though, the house was beautifully cosy.
Lovely big house, huge rooms, comfy beds, quirky vibe, gorgeous big garden full of birds and rabbits, great location for visiting amazing attractions in Northumberland like Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle.

United KingdomA couple of suggestions for going forward: - Both showers are in need of some work. The pressure upstairs is poor; the downstairs one turns itself between freezing and scalding. - Some beds are more comfortable than others - a rolling programme of updating mattresses would be a thought. - We asked for all bedrooms to be used, to minimise adults sharing, but one downstairs one was screwed shut. - The small oven doesn’t seem to work. The last he one meant this wasn’t an issue, but it would have been useful.
Fabulous few days with a large group of friends. We loved the huge house with its many rooms, corridors and stair cases. It made the ideal hide and seek location, and the massive gardens with various swings and climbing toys kept the kids entertained. The house is old and has quirks, but we expected that and fully embraced them. It was a great place to relax and catch up with friends. The lounge is huge and comfy, and the tele is modern and has Netflix etc. The kitchen is well equipped and has loads of room to make huge meals. The utility has extra fridge space which we really appreciated. The views are amazing and we loved looking at the animals in the adjoining field. The huge stuffed bear was the star of the show - he travelled around the house, jump-scaring us behind many a door!

United KingdomThere are two ovens and the smaller one wasn't working while we were there, we managed with just one though so it was okay. A few of the beds were quite were a bit uncomfortable and the mattresses could do with being replaced. Everything else was great!
The house was wonderfully characterful, huge rooms with high ceilings and many corridors. I personally loved the quirky, ecclectic style. The house seemed to go on and on when we got there and we had a lot of fun finding more and more rooms when we first arrived! The garden was beautiful too, it encircled the house and was a wonderful space with fruit trees John encouraged us to pick from! The kitchen was well stocked with crockery, cutley plates, cooking trays etc. Somehow the pictures online don't fully do the house justice, I would encourage the hosts to add more pictures of the inside! We didnt fully know what to expect but we were all really pleasantly surprised by everything! I think its been said before but its not the kind of place that will be spotless, matching and perfect, (it was definitely clean though) but it was charming and unusual, just as an big old house should be!

United KingdomEverything as above.
Keys were easy to collect but the house was in disrepair and frankly should not be rented out. Electrics looked very old and a worry. Beds were awful, there were loads of doors and rooms locked off. Genuinely an awful place.

United KingdomThere was nothing we did not like!
This property was perfect for our family reunion. We have stayed here before and will definitely stay here again. The bedrooms are spacious with comfy beds. There is a huge lounge with loads of comfy armchairs. The kitchen is large and well equipped, with a big wooden dining table - we got 16 people round it. The manse is a wonderful mixture of history, eccentricity and playfulness and has a lovely garden with barbeque and seating. We all felt very at home here and everyone, old and young, had a great time. The host John is very helpful.

United KingdomHouse needs updating. Garden was like an overgrown forest when we arrived which was annoying as it was beautiful weather which we couldn't enjoy properly in the garden. Asked host to sort, said it would be done the next day but never was.
Brilliant location and plenty to do within 45 minutes. House was huge, beds were fairly comfy and showers warm. A good level of kitchen utensils and a handy dishwasher. Internet provided but can be on and off.

United KingdomThere was a nasty 'fusty' moldy smell throughout. For the amount of money that it cost, I was very disappointed with the overall appearance, if it had been my primary holiday accommodation, I would have been extremely disappointed.

United KingdomThe only thing was the heating wasn't working in the main living room. But a sweater was more than adequate to keep warm. The rest of the house was toastie.
The house was lovely and spacious! Plenty room for lots of family fun! Best venue for a massive family game of hide and seek. Bedrooms are comfortable. Rooms are very big! Kitchen perfect for cooking up a family feast!
