How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe room itself was ok although the sink in the en-suite was tiny. Our main issue was the road noise which began early in the morning. Even though this is a small seaside town the property - or at least the room we were in - faces directly onto the main road. It’s also the main route to Lochgilphead and Campbeltown so quite busy. The owner did warn us that it could be noisy despite its triple glazed window.
The noise from the road nearby
A few months ago, we installed new acoustic soundproof windows to help reduce road noise. Many people prefer this location because everything is within walking distance. As your host, I told you that especially at night, it's best to keep the windows closed. If you left the window open and expected no noise from the road, I can't be held responsible for that. Unfortunately, you gave my property a low score due to the noise, despite my informing you about the situation. I wish I could do more, but there’s not much I can do in this case. I hope you'll consider booking elsewhere in the future.

Verified reviewI booked the room as I was working nearby. Tarbert is a beautiful little village - very picturesque, and the people are very friendly and welcoming. Car parking being free onstreet way a bonus too. I started in the deluxe double room and found it good value. The room was clean, and had everything I could've asked for. It had that home touch touch to it that made it so the more welcoming. The bed was very comfortable, which I was grateful about. Handily the TV had access to a lot of the streaming services. The complimentary drinks and biscuits weren't expected and warmly received. The bathroom was totally fine, and the shower had good pressure. I can't really fault the place. The host was particularly excellent - communicative, helpful, adaptive and nice. I would definitely return here if in the area.
It's tough to find anything wrong with the property. It was also well located. My only thing - which is nothing to do with the property - is that local restaurants close kind of early, so bear that in mind.

Verified reviewThis cute corner room in Tarbert is an affordable gem. Our stay in the deluxe room had everything we needed: a comfortable bed, a shower with truly amazing water pressure, fast WIFI, and a great host. While a couple things could be improved, they were small and did not affect our basic use of the amenities. One amazing perk was our room's windows--they overlook the harbor and Tarbert Castle! The location is also incredibly convenient, located around the corner from a supermarket that is open until 22:00 and down the street from several delicious restaurants. As of August 2025, Tarbert has free parking, and there were plentiful spots to park very close by. The guest house is located above the main street, but the sound-proof windows work incredibly well when closed all the way. The Rest is a 3-minute walk to a delicious restaurant with fresh seafood, a 10-minute walk to the castle grounds with hiking opportunities, and a 20-minute drive from the ferry to Arran. The host: Shamsul is super communicative and friendly, responding within minutes to messages and even stopping by the guest house personally. We arrived earlier than estimated, and he was so lovely to allow us to check in early. In addition to leaving water and tea for us, Shamsul went out of his way to gift us Scottish cookies, and gave us copious tips and recommendations about the town and region. He is a truly kind and caring person, and was the highlight of our stay--he even offered to bring us petrol should we run out! Overall, our stay in Tarbert at the Rest was exactly what we needed. Thank you!!
I'm truly amazed! 😮 No one has ever written such a long, lovely review about my property in the past. Your feedback encourages me greatly to continue my good work.

Very tacky and not clean you should visit the property before recommending
A retired old couple booked a standard double room, but I assigned them Room No. 1, a deluxe room for maximum comfort. I was shocked when they lied about the room.

You are the most skilled liar I have ever encountered. You failed to provide any evidence to support your claims. Your behavior is quite unpleasant, and you continue to spread falsehoods. Fortunately, my other guests do not share your tendency to make unfounded allegations; otherwise, I would have to consider closing my business. I have encountered a few individuals like you on my property. Their intent was clear: to make false complaints and request refunds. In the past, I had a guest who entered the laundry room and kitchen and took pictures of the fridge to justify a request for a partial refund, despite guests being prohibited from accessing those areas. As a result, Booking.com banned that guest and canceled their booking. Replying to your message is a complete waste of time. I wish you luck in making unfounded allegations against other establishments.

Verified reviewlocation was excellent. Proprietor very amenable and helpful, the key was not where it was supposed to be when we arrived but he came very quickly to let us is and check everything was OK. It was clean, neat and comfrotable. Everything worked well.
A bedside table on both sides of the bed would be good if there was space. also more table room for kettle etc, but in a small roonm this is not always possible.

It seems that a cheap person is always criticising others' places and tries to prove that they are posh. This is the sign of cheap people.
