Excellent food,attentive staff.what's not to like a hotel with 5 star performance...

Rooms spotless but lacking refrigerator which we would expect in this standard of hotel. TV also rather small. Mattress soft at the edges, which is common in so many hotels that do not replace them often enough, causing me 17st. to be sleeping on a slope.

Beautiful classical ambience and decor which is spotlessly maintained. Best hotel meal for a very long time.

Kitchen generators next to our room (108) started very early and were loud, interrupting our sleep. Bathroom accessories to include shower cap and cotton pads would have been useful.

We both felt that whilst the food was adequate it did not reflect the very high standards set by the rest of the hotel. However we understand that the menus are about to be revamped and hope that this will address what we felt were it’s current shortcomings.

A well appointed hotel. Our room was immaculate and beautifully decorated. The staff both on the reception and especially in the restaurant were welcoming and helpful. We found Michelle to be particularly friendly & engaging and with a most interesting and extensive knowledge of the hotel’s history. To be honest the level of service she provided was exceptional from start to finish.

We had a large, comfortable room with a floor to ceiling bay window. There was free on site car parking.

Convenient location for exploring Bideford and the tarka trail. Fabulous large room, clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Good breakfast and ok food in restaurant

Friendly staff, comfortable bed , clean room, good sized bath towel. Close to the main town with a walk across a bridge. Parking opposite the Hotel. Loved the green room for Breakfast (a bit of history in there) and the attentive staff service. Nice uniforms.... Sort of brought in the country feel . Big Breakfast option.... croissant to cold cuts, cereals and toast + cooked options. I settled for the cooked English which is a generous portion.

Very minor issue...the en suite in my room was tiny...no room to dry and the shower a bit slow but this is an old building and it wasn't a major issue and other rooms may be different.

Staff exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Dinner was delicious. We enjoyed after dinner drinks in the lounge overlooking the river. Also parking very close and convenient.

No lounge area, there were nice chairs in the lobby though. However this wouldn’t stop us staying again.

Great character hotel along the Tarka trail. Locked bike shed in the car park. Evening meal was very good.

Location and convenient parking. Room upgrade to wonderful 3 windowed room in the tower overlooking the river and Bideford. Huge really comfortable bed! Excellent breakfast!

Seems to live from past glory with outside and rooms a bit old (restaurant looked great though). Nothing dramatic, but you can get the same quality for a lower price.

The restaurant room looks great, and the breakfast is decent. Rooms had adequate curtains.

Excellent hotel that has clearly recently been refurbished to a very hight standard. Very attentive & professional staff; comfortable & clean room / bathroom; very good food! All in an excellent location for North Devon and highly recommended!

Cons - dog friendly hotel which we didn't realise when we booked. We don't have a dog! 2 doors away from our room, early evening, a dog was left barking in the room whilst the owners went out. Unfortunately we did have to complain. The hotel staff were extremely apologetic and when the owners returned they spoke to the owners regarding complaint. We were given a complimentary drink at the bar by a member of staff as an apology. The only other thing we could fault was no net curtains in our room. We had to keep curtains closed as houses opposite would be able to see straight into our room as they were quite close. Felt no privacy because of this and it made the room dark and dingy with having to keep curtains closed all the time whilst in the room, especially when sun was shining outside. 😔

Pros - Great location, excellent staff, nice bar area, hotel extremely clean and tidy. Fantastic Sunday Carvery. Hotel car park opposite across the road. Very comfortable beds with lovely cotton sheets. Slept really well.

The room was very hot. The windows did not open . There was a security light that kept coming on throughout the night outside my window.
