How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Food rather dull - though being able to get bar meals from 12 to 9 pm was good.
Central to the village, and for walks - no need to drive.

Nothing really. If I had to find something I'd say the room was a little warm during the night for me as I like to sleep with my room cool at home. But My wife thought the temperature was ok.
The staff were great. Made us feel very welcome. The food was great. We went back the following day after a hike to have our dinner before driving home as the food had been great the night before. The room was nicely presented, the bathroom a nice size and the shower cubicle a good size as well. The shower was a power shower and just what we needed after a long day hiking. The bed was very comfy. The rooms were well equipped with a kettle, hairdryer, heated towel rail, wardrobe and drawers and a TV. It's situated in lovely grounds and gives excellent access to the town and nearby hiking trails. The breakfast was also good.

The rooms were a little tired and needed updating. I thought we paid too much as I would have expected luxurious for the price and a pool that was in use.
The hotel was in a wonderful location with nice rooms and ensuite bathroom. Great breakfast.

Its advertising as a spa and we paid 169 for one night only to be told the pool was not in use and hasn’t been since January Breakfast was very nice

Room was very small (although measurements were quoted when booking), breakfast was OK but cooked breakfast was all fried.

The duvet didn't fit the bed and the sheets were too small exposing a worn-out mattress. The room was not clean and the shower was blocked cresting a pool of water while showering.
A beautiful old hotel in a tranquil environment. Grasmere is a beautiful town and it was lovely staying here. William's Bar and the food were great

The disabled room (which was good) was near to the disabled parking, but quite a distance from the dining room.

Only once was the food hot, most of the time it was luke warm. And this was the case with most evening meals, vegetables were mostly luke warm or almost cold. Difficult explaining this to waiting staff as they didn't quite understand you.

The restaurant
The room and hotel were beautiful, cosy, clean and very welcoming. We were disappointed with the restaurant as it was just like a pub and not a restaurant at all. In the evening the communal areas were cold. As a non drinker I felt the choice of drinks from the bar was limited. The breakfast was excellent.

I do not mind pets in the dining room but do not really like to see them eating in the dining room.

No tissues or toiletries. Confusion about servicing bedrooms and free drinks offer. £15 for afternoon tea which consisted of 4 teabags and hot water and milk. Had to carry ourselves with no service. Smoking outside front door should not be allowed as it drifted up to our bedroom. Very obvious shortage of staff. Some reception areas not serviced. Bed in one bedroom was unacceptable, base overhung mattress by a foot and difficult to get around. Couldn’t be sorted by staff.
Staff great. Breakfast choices limited and not attractive display. Needs more space. Dinner was ok but perhaps needed more variety across the week.
