Our room was very hot and we couldn't work out how to use the air conditioning. Maybe a note on the wall (like the ones for the shower) would be useful.

The food was delicious and food size portions. The staff were friendly and helpful.

First impression wasn't too good. We arrived earlier than the check in time and asked if I could leave my bag whilst I go out. I was told there was a £5 charge! Many hotels, and even airbnb keep luggage for guests after check out so I thought this was quite excessive. The room was ok, it's an old building but the furnishing could have been better. The chest of drawers were wobbly whenever I opened the drawers, they could have made it more stable. The worst part was the shower, it was very small I couldn't even stretch my elbows out without touching both sides. The shower curtain was hung up with an extendable pole and there was a gap at the bottom, the floor was wet after showering and I had to place the bath mat further away to keep that dry. That meant I either had to step on a wet floor first or try to leap onto a dry bath mat, both are accidents waiting to happen.

The food was very nice, both during dinner and breakfast and the staff were very friendly.

A great base for a week of exploring and walking the Island

The absence of fresh fruit and Marmite! It did tend to be a bit noisy into the evening, but the gulls early morning were outside of any control. In my bedroom at the far end of the second floor, there was a persistent noise of what sounded like running water filling a tank - mostly early morning - which meant that once I woke (early morning anyway, around 5AM), dozing until time for a shower and breakfast wasn't an option.

I was with several friends, all of whom (bar one) stayed at the Wheatsheaf as it was handy for days out, by bus and for walking. Being so close to the bus station, hub of the Island network, was ideal. Some of us started the stay with a full breakfast (and I with porridge) but it was a hot and humid week, so I stayed with poached egg and toast, and plenty of tea. Three of us felt the need for Marmite, and fresh fruit, and arranged supplies from a nearby supermarket. We did try the cask ale - the Butcombe Original was fine - and stayed for dinner the first evening. While I usually headed up to bed by 10PM, the others were happily playing pool and enjoying beer and wine until much later on successive nights.

The window didn't open in our room. A fan was provided, but I found it quite noisy to sleep with it all night. There's no parking at the wheatsheaf, one of the staff advised us to park at the multiple storey car park opposite., it's an old building, all lifts were broken so no good if you have mobility issues. You can only park for 12 hours, it closes at 7 pm. It was no good for us because we wanted a 24-hour car park, which we found 5 minutes away, £8 .

    Breakfast was good, friendly staff.

Advice on arrival for services such as WiFi and breakfast times, building access outside of opening hours. We were left to figure it out for ourselves. They really could help guests and themselves with even just a printed guide in each room.

The only reason I didn't give the Weatsheaf 10/10 is that we are Vegan and there was nothing on either the breakfast menu or evening menu in the pub for us to choose from. No doubt the staff would of been lovely enough to find something for us but we appreciate it so much more when we have at least 2-3 vegan options on a menu to chose from. Veganism is so much more popular now since my husband has been vegan for all his 43 years we know things are much easier, but it would be lovely if little places like this could join in the progression and carer for us too. Thankfully Newport is a nice sized town with a few chain restaurants and Indians that always offer vegan options. If it had been a smaller village or town we definitely would of been very hungry after a long day's walking and so would of had to reduce our rating by lots more sadly.

What a beautiful little gem! A lovely pub, friendly staff, perfect central location in a really nice central town great for our walking holiday. We were actually amazed by the price for such a nice room! It really is incredible value. But not just that it's lovely quality. The little touches are so important and definitely appreciated! Our favourite bits about the room and stay were: *The Air con! What a welcome feature on a day like yesterday 27 degrees! Didn't even notice it with this in place! Thank you! *The bed! Super comfy and super big! *The shower *The toiletries and teas etc (even though we didn't use them as we had our own it was very thoughtful) *Bedding - super comfy hotel quality bedding *Clean and not too cluttered - as a blind person I found it really easy to navigate because it was so nicely arranged and decorated without clutter. *Later check out time is fab and very helpful. Thank you!

Bathroom was tiny. Shower was too small and a pathetic drip but it was clean.

The fact that the room was on a slope the stairs were very narrow and steep (old building very quirky)

Location the room was clean was clear that the effort had been made to make it a comfortable stay where possible like tea and coffee provided with biscuits and toiletries in bathroom first aid kit in room some scissors hairdryer just the small things that were included in the room
