Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIf you like luxury this place probably isn’t for you but the basic amenities are all there. The shower left much to be desired and one of the beds was slanted.
Firstly, the location- located in the forest and walking distance from sumec champey it is ideal. We had the best walk down to sumec with the dog from the hostel showing us the way. Secondly, the people running the place where very happy to answer any of our (stupid) questions about the area or to help with Spanish. They made the property as good as it was and couldn’t have been any nicer.

BarbadosThe highlight of this place was the owner, he was very kind and informative about semuc champey. The accommodations were adequate for 2 nights and there is an on-site restaurant. Semuc is about 5 mins drive away and tuk-tuks are available if you didn't drive.

CanadaThey forgot to pick me up from the bus station, claiming that it was a misunderstanding (but that's even worse because it means they don't read their messages on Booking.com, I wrote to them that I would need a shuttle immediately after making the reservation). I waited in the rain for 2 hours for nothing, and ended up paying my way to the hostel. My score would have been higher if this situation didn't happen.
It's a beautiful place, we spent 3 nights here. You are in the jungle so you can hear howler monkeys at night, I slept very well despite the humidity and rain. The staff are kind, especially Manuel was very attentive to our needs and a lovely person to speak with overall. I came here on the recommendation of a friend and glad I did.

United KingdomPersonally, I loved this hostel. It's nestled in the jungle about 30mins walk from Semuc. Facilities are basic, and yes, as mentioned in previous comments, there are insects around, but that should be expected here. It's not luxury at all, but one of my favourite hostels so far as it feels welcoming and real - family run, the staff are lovely and will give you advice, also I had a personal tour theough the garden and saw my first howler monkey. They also have very decent onward shuttle prices. I recommend bringing snacks and water from Antigua or wherever you come from as there isn't anywhere nearby to snacks. The hostel sells breakfasts (yum!) and dinners, which are decent.

United StatesThere was only one bathroom and no shared kitchen, so you had to get food in the restaurant which is tasty, but also drives up your Budjet. As it's located in the middle of nowhere, there is nothing around, and be prepared to see some big spiders or even a scorpion around.
The host was very nice and helped with everything. The hostel is within a 30min walk from Semuc Champey, and it is a beautiful accommodation containing multiple guest houses. The prices are fair.

United KingdomWould be nice to have a warm shower as an option after you’ve been to the Semuc Champey pools but expected cold and was fine. Appreciate its basic because of the location.
Great location - jungle experience and walking distance to SC. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, cool concept in lodges.

NetherlandsWeird ‘worms’ in room and bathroom, you live with the jungle here so be prepared for that. It’s all a bit mouldy.
It’s within walking distance to the National park with the lagoons. Like a 45 min walk down the mainroad. I guess it can be lively but there were no other guests.

Really lovely hostel in nature and in walkable distance to Semuc Champey. The staff are lovely and super helpful and it was so nice and clean.

Kinda remote but not expensive. It's a great place if you wanna spend a night or two and walk to the river instead of paying for a ride. The host was nice and friendly, the dorms are basic, few comfy beds on the floor

GermanyStaying in the jungle comes with a more rustic experience. Cash-only. You're staying in a hut with cold water and some insects. If that bothers you, Semuc Champey isn't the right place to go though.
This is not your typical hostel because it is in the jungle. So it shouldn't be held at the same standard as other hostels that are better connected to infrastructure. There are some other fancier hostels in the area but many of them are not locally owned. The team at El Nawal is fantastic. Breakfast is great and a good price at around 35-40 per person with free coffee/tea. There is no kitchen, you eat at the restaurant, but it is also reasonably priced. Bring some snacks when traveling to Semuc Champey, so you're covered during the day. The restaurant is also a nice area to hang out in the evenings, watching the rain and listening to the sounds of the jungle. Truly recommend staying here, keep an open mind and support local Guatemalans. Definitely do the guided tour through the Jungle. Bonus points because there is a cute grumpy Schnauzer.

GuatemalaIt was really hot and smoky and due to the open-air (or mesh-walled) rooms there was no escaping it.
The staff were extremely helpful. I was there during an unusually hot time and they let me borrow the fan from the office to sleep. They also picked me up from the bus stop and gave me good advice about catching my bus out of town. I really appreciate them!

United KingdomThe rooms are basic but comfortable. You are able to hear other other guests in the hostel, even if you're not in the same room as them. Shower facilities are very basic and often cold.
A basic hostel in a great location walking distance from Semuc Champey. The staff were very helpful and welcoming and the food served was very simple and tasty. It is a good place to stay for a couple of nights while visiting Semuc Champey but don't expect any thrills here. It is a good stay for the price. The wifi is good in the main area but doesn't work in the rooms and dorms.

NetherlandsIt's location is right between Semuc Champey and Lanquin. It is about 40 minutes on foot to Semuc Champey and over an hour on foot back, as it is up hill. You can get a 4x4 back but It's not as easy to get one to go to Semuc as they are already on their wat from Lanquin.

SingaporeWould be good if there’s a kitchen for travelers to use (they have a resto) and refillable water (they sell 3 litres bottle for q18) and fans in the room (it gets really HOT from 9am onwards but it’s cool at night). There’s no convenience stores nearby so best to buy whatever you need from Lanquin.
The family running the hostel are really nice! The travelers in the hostel are nice too! I slept well at night (it’s quiet and peaceful) even though the room gets reallyyyy hot from 9am onwards. The shared toilet and shower are clean (only cold water shower but it’s good because it’s soooo hot in lanquin). It’s approximately 50 minutes stroll to Semuc Champey (you’ll get dusty and sweaty during the walk). Possible to get a tuktuk for q12 per pax (if share with a few others + haggle). The hostel offers free pickups in Lanquin if you arrive in the evening (my shuttle arrived in the morning so I paid for the lorry pickup by my shuttle company - the max should be q25)

Remote jungle oasis. So peaceful and just a short walk to Semuc Champey. Hiro our guide to Semuc was amazing, he showed us native plants to eat along a jungle walk through the mountains to get there. He guided us through the pools and caves and waterfalls with so much care and information. He offered to do the tour in English or Spanish and we chose Spanish but explained that we are still beginners. So he took the extra effort to speak slowly and clearly the whole day and we were able to understand him and learnt so much! Thank you Hiro the hero!

United StatesDorm beds are in a loft with little foot space due to angled roof. Someone inevitably kicks the metal roof while sleeping and makes a lot of noise.
