How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewMariposa Lodge is a well located lodge off the main road in West End Roatan and so it is a quiet place. My room had the amenities that were mentioned on booking.com and I was expecting. The room was clean, with a clean bathroom with towels. The air conditioning worked fine. There was safety deposit box in room, which is a nice thing to have. And the room had a refrigerator, coffee maker and a microwave. The bed was comfortable with clean sheets, however the huge king size bed was too big for the small room. The first few days the internet did not work, however after I informed the staff the problem was resolved within a few days. The only problem I had were sand flee bites, I was eaten alive every night by these creature I couldn’t even see. I tried insect repellent, it didn’t help much. I had so many bites all over my body, scratched myself bloody. I have been back in the states for a week now and I am still scratching the bite marks.
The property is clean and quiet. The small pool is a nice touch. The location of the lodge is central near everything in the west end.

They were having an issue with the hot water. So, I ended up with a couple cold showers.

Verified reviewLocation is great. Right next to everything in the west end. Air conditioning worked really well and was great on the hot muggy days.
After a rain there were a lot of flying insects that appeared. Some of these made it into the room and were not cleaned when the room was serviced.

Verified reviewMariposa Lodge was perfectly located in Roatan's West End. Located close enough to the action of Main Street, it was also tucked away down a quiet street away from the noise of the main road. On-site manage, Darwin, was super helpful at check in as well as helping me to arrange my departure transportation to the airport.

Verified reviewLocation was perfect for us. Quiet at night but only a minute to West end road with all the restaurants. Nice but small and clean pool you can access 24/7 but only like 2 people at a time, the area is very small.
AC was so loud at times, tried all settings and fan intensity but still I woke up sometimes at night because of it. People who worked there were nice, not super friendly but proffesional and they could store our luggage for an hour but we couldn't sit by the pool or anything, we were only allowed to stay at the entrance, that's ok but every other place we asked this trip were totally ok with us hanging out by the pool or whatever for a while after check out.
Melker, We have never received any complaints about the AC being loud in Unit 7, we will look into it and make sure there is not a problem with the unit. Again we have not ever received any complaints about our staff, but the absolute opposite about them. There can be a language barrier communicating with them as Spanish is their first language and our manager is learning English. But our goal is for our guests to have a great stay and be comfortable, we will be discussing things with them. Thank you, RGH

Verified reviewWe really enjoyed our stay. Mariposa is 1 minute away from busy west end bars and restaurants but hidden away a bit that you are not disturbed with laud music or people returning from night out. The room was great size with very comfortable big bed. We were provided by water so we didn't have to buy any in the shop whole week. We had fridge, microwave and coffee maker. All you need to reheat leftover food from restaurants (the portions were huge) and we could make our cup of coffee before we went out exploring :-). Staff was very friendly, we use the transport from and to the airport organizer by Mariposa. The driver was very nice, born and raise in Roatan so we could have a chat about that the island without being on official tour. We highly recommend this place for it's great location, good facilities and very professional staff. Thank you for making our stay so memorable Veronika and Simon :-).

Veronika and Simon, Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Mariposa and the kind words. We can't wait to have you back with us. All the best, RGH

Verified reviewThe bed was very comfortable. The location is the best & quiet, even on weekends when the music is flowing from the main strip.
I booked the room next to the one they put me in, because of the corner porch with table & chairs. It also overlooked the pool. That room also had 2 bedside lamps, one on each side of bed. Reasons I booked that room. The overhead pot lights need to be on a dimmer switch. It’s high or nothing. It would’ve been nice to have a “working safe”, available for use. I didn’t like the ants all over bathroom countertop 24/7. Maybe because there’s only hot water in the shower…I just wish I could’ve had the room I booked.
Ellen, Our records indicate that Unit 8 is the room that you reserved. I apologize it is not the room you were expecting, we will make sure there is nothing wrong with the site listings to resolve any confusion. We are actually in the process of changing all room safes to digital code safes. The problem is that guests often take the safe keys with them and then we have to move the safes or put an older one in it's place. So next time that will be resolved. And please let us or our staff know that your room was not what you had expected, and usually we can accommodate a move. Thank you for staying with us, and we hope to have you back, RGH
