It is a natural phenomenon of "blooming of the sea" which we also call mucilagini or as the Italians called it "mare sporco" for the first time hundreds of years ago. This phenomenon is a normal phenomenon in our region. The last time we recorded it was about twenty years ago, since then it has never been this intense. This phenomenon is contributed by the increased influence of the Po River, which the Center for Marine Research recorded with measurements on oceanographic buoys in front of Rovinj, where a record low salinity was measured. Relatively high sea temperatures since April, a lot of precipitation that brings into the sea and a lot of nutrient salts have allowed the otherwise natural community of phytoplankton to multiply in greater numbers and form slimy clumps that have now floated to the surface.
