How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewVery nice place, the room was cosy and the common area so comfortable. The place is quiet and very clean. You can rent a scooter there and they are very helpful and give the best recommandations on any subject.
The mosque just next to the homestay means you ca be woken up during the night but with earplugs we slept very well

Verified reviewOur stay at Buddha Hostel was amazing! The room was completely fine. The common areas were very cozy and unique (a beautiful kitchen, an indoor and outdoor bathroom, and many different chill spots). The owner, Ardi, was incredibly friendly and sociable. He is always open for a talk, giving tips, and more. It’s located close to the busy but very lively Prawirotaman street, yet because the hostel is situated in a quiet side street, it’s very peaceful inside—except for the mosque prayers, but you hear those throughout the whole city anyway. A real recommendation!

Verified reviewGreat for a long stay! Different chill out/common areas, comfortable private rooms and bathrooms, good AC. Ardi is a darling host and was able to recommend activities in Jogja and elsewhere in Java. I’d stay here again!
Nothing, suited me just fine. Noise from the mosque doesn’t bother me :)

Verified reviewLocation, vibe and people are unmatched. Happy Buddha is down a smaller side street, providing some calm and peace, yet super close to bars and restaurants making it easy to pop out and be right where you want to be. Ardie and everyone working there are incredibly friendly and welcoming, there is always someone around to have a chat with but there are also chill spaces if you want to have a bit of alone time. It’s the perfect place for a solo traveler, so easy to meet other travellers as well as locals. The location is also super safe. I highly recommend!
Genuinely couldn’t think of a bad thing to say.

Verified reviewAmazing common rooms with great style, kitchen and free water, great price, fairly quiet but really central in a nice neighborhood with nice restaurants.
I had room seven, which has a bad smell. Don't know where it comes from (maybe under bed - please check, it's not pleasant). Maybe add a mosquito net and a small reading lamp is always nice. Main bathroom could use a deep clean but otherwise everything great...

Verified reviewStayed in the double room for 2 nights. The hostel is located in the center near the stores and restaurants. The room was clean and comfortable, with AC and reliable WiFi. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We felt safe at the accommodation at all times and the host let us store our bags and hang out at the hostel for a few hours as we were waiting for our train that was leaving at midnight.
Nothing.

Verified reviewStayed for 4 nights around the start of Eid. Communal spaces are nice and we spent most of one day in the hammocks. Ardi is a lovely man and a kind host. Free earplugs because of nearby mosque! Didn’t like the welcome from a large cockroach in our bedroom upon arrival. Bathroom looks dirty. Nothing a deep clean couldn’t fix but also the extractor fan for the bathroom does not work. Communal kitchen is handily supplied with complimentary noodles and breakfast cereals with milk in the fridge, but the general cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Spotted cockroach number 2 behind sink on 3rd day, confirming hygiene concerns. Overall, value for money is not great. It’s a backpacker hostel with access to area with western food places and bars. Maybe we are too old!!
Hi Vincent Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We're really glad to hear you enjoyed the communal spaces, the hammocks, and the company of our staff—Ardi will be especially happy to hear your kind words! We’re truly sorry to hear about the cleanliness issues you encountered. We take all feedback seriously and are currently addressing the concerns you raised. A deep clean of the bathrooms and kitchen is already underway, and we’re also checking the extractor fan and reinforcing pest control measures to ensure a more comfortable stay for future guests. We appreciate your honesty—it helps us improve. While our hostel is geared toward budget-conscious travelers, we strive to offer a warm and welcoming environment for everyone, no matter their age or travel style. Thanks again for staying with us, and we wish you all the best on your travels! Warm regards, Happy buddha team Team

Verified reviewCan't get enough to see this lovely small place, beautiful surroundings by the greeneries and local life. Plants decorations are best. You'll feel like in your own home. Tiny gazebo was great idea to chill and relax after your full day trip. Hammock at the front was the cutest. You'll not find this anywhere else. The staff were great by explaining anything at this hostel. Coffee amenities are free, great idea for those who love to have a coffee in the morning time. Was great service in a budget hostel. Cool place!
You'll hear the call prayers often, moreover in early morning time. But this things are very normal in a moslem country. The bed is noisy during our sleep movement. I can't imagine for the couple who have s*x, more noisy I believe. The lady who handled my check out was having a flat face, I gave the key without any word something or just because I am local, have no idea. But while treated the white person, she was giving the different service. I saw the difference. Totally alright for my experience in Indonesia, I fly back to the UK soonest. Overall was Fabolous. Thanks
